>>
>>35032702
You always need that one knife you beat to complete shit. Why not have it be cheap. And keep that other one looking nice and last longer?
>>
>>35032702
This is my stance as well. I used to buy a decent amount of chinkshit (mostly Chinese-made stuff from real brands like Kershaw, though), but now it's just drawer clutter because I'd rather carry and use my nice stuff.

>>35032792
Why buy an expensive knife if you're not gonna use it? I don't abuse any of my knives - I use appropriate tools for prying, turning screws, etc. - but when it comes to doing actual knife stuff, I treat my Sebenza, Benchmades, Lionsteel, etc. the same way I treat my Kershaws and other cheap knives.

>>35030246
Don't.

Use your knife to carve the stick into a spear. Then you have a knife AND a spear.

If you lash your only knife to a stick to turn it into a spear, then you stand a better chance at losing or breaking your only tool.

Uh so just lost my lionsteel tre g10. Seek recommondations for another flipper/easy acces knife, more affordable with thick blade that this time I will put on a keychain, needs to clip sturdily to trouser too. The g10 started clipping and rusting way too fast.

The reason chinese get steel for cheap, is that their government helps the local businesses when buying raw materials for export. This was said by a chinese guy on bladeforums years back.

Some guy on Facebook made a video about how one of his Field Tech fixed blades broke during use and Rick went ballistic calling the guy a dipshit etc. and claiming that he must have been using the knife for throwing. It spilled over into his subforum on BF, when people saw what a petulant child he was being they sided with the Facebook guy so Rick had his second in command, Rob, delete all the posts and had the subforum closed.
www.bladeforums.com/threads/the-rick-hinderer-forum-is-now-closed.1329456/

The knife making community is full of people who see knife collectors as nothing more than cattle to be milked for cash, people like Hinderer, Strider, Medford etc.

well here's the funny thing;
My paramilitary 2 in s30v not only rolled real bad, but it chipped on me as well. Maybe it's a bad batch, or maybe I did bad voodoo to it, but a little bit of lateral stress and it twisted the edge like a mother fucker. I realize there will always be bad batches, grind angle importance, and just stupidity, but having paid $100+ for a knife with a modern super steel, it did open my eyes up and now I really just use S30V as my benchmark.

Also, the para2 in s30v has a much more toothy edge when sharpened to the same degree as my other knives. I guess I'll have to go lower than 17-18 degrees on the the thing.

I know it's just spyderco I have of s30v and just one knive of that steel from them, but it's left a sort of bad taste in my mouth. ESPECIALLY when I look to benchmade and hoping to buy some of their knives, but almost a majority of their stuff is s30v and much more expensive.
>>
>>35038156
and now, I did not use the paramilitary 2 as a pry bar, shit, I don't really even use my knives for batoning, I have a packable axe/hatchet for that job.
>>
>>35038156
I'd be contacting Spyderco and telling them the steel isn't performing as well as other s30v, they are probably the worst out the big companies when it comes to warranty but if you badger them enough they'll give in.

I bought one on a whim once at one of those shit stores that sell swords and weird shit like knives shaped like spiders and shit, and I ended up really enjoying twirling it around. Look at the voids in the CF in the picture I posted..

Not to mention a $250 knife should have zero blade play. I can tighten the pivot until it has no blade play but then it's too tight to swing open and closed freely.

And it uses the same dinky axis lock hardware that they use on practically all their knives. For the price it should at least have unique hardware for the thumb studs and axis lock thing.

You got a bad one. I'm sorry. Mine has perfect centering, zero blade play, and swings open no problem. It's perfect in those areas. The only thing not perfect is the grind on the s90v edge. It's sharp as fuck, but when you look closely at the edge and angle it's imperfect. Cuts just fine of course.

Good points about the hardware. It's an expensive knife but I feel like mine is worth it. Would feel ripped off if I had yours. I'd return it to benchmade.

Ideally double edged, and long enough to reach the vital organs. I'd say any military knife or dagger is good enough.
And since you have to reach the organs: prefer stabbing. Remember, slashing anywhere but the neck and wrists will only make the opponent more angry and adrenalin filled, only slash if youre really confident that you'll get a good hit.
But keep it sharp by all means, it will make the stabbing wound worse when you pull the knife out.

And only use it if you REALLY have to

I rather doubt that Anon was talking about home defense when he said self defense. Even if he was a knife is shit for that because when in the home you don't have to worry about length restrictions and can use things like bats.

>What's wrong with the source?
The fact that the first sentence on the page is talking about "techniques that will only stop a pussy" is a pretty big red flag, as is the author disparaging grips that are commonly extolled by people who know their shit. It's one thing to say "here's what I think is best and here's why," entirely another to say "here's what I think is best and everything else is shit." I fenced throughout middle and high school and were I forced to use one of my blades against someone I'd be coming at them with a sword bayonet in what he identifies as the "fighting grip" which is apparently somehow not suitable for fighting. Anyone who follows the literature commonly associated with the F-S will be using a similar technique. Granted sport fencing isn't the same as real fighting but I still have plenty of experience putting the tip of a blade to someone capable of doing the same to me.

Also I'm pretty sure that's a boning knife in his hand.
>>
>>35048938

The author actually did time in Folsom prison and is said to have witnessed and experienced several serious knife fights. Of course, its not a complete guide since he couldnt use actual knives as a prisoner but knife-like tools, which is why the tactics are all limited to simple stabbing attacks

>>35051097
>the "fighting grip" which is apparently somehow not suitable for fighting
Yes, fighting/hit grip is something I'm not entirely sure of myself, some other knife guides I've red also recommended the fighting grip.
Not sure about actual fencing, but I imagine getting a blade as deep inside as possible and pulling it out quickly might require a decent amount of strength, the kind of grip thats suitable might depend on the blade, the wound location and physical strength.

I've read the book. The good thing is that it addresses how fast and brutal a knife attack is and how criminals think. It veers too much into "this is the only way people use knives" territory like only Folsom prison inmates are the true knife experts.

>icepick grip is bad and only happens in movies meme
We have tons of historical manuals from different martial cultures that all use the knife in an icepick grip

>slashing does nothing meme
Slashes aren't as lethal as thrusts, but that doesn't mean they aren't useful and deadly in their own right.

You cut the tendons in a guy's arm, and he's not going to be able to hold anything.

Even a small knife can do pretty serious cuts when you account for the guy moving in to the cut.

What he identifies as the fighting grip is generally known as the saber grip an can be found in everything from modern fencing to military swordsmanship. I've seen the grip he advocates used but I can't jive with the fact that he disparages a grip that I know was used historically and was taught to use myself.

From the information that he learned what he knows in prison I can only guess that most of what he's seen fail was people trying to emulate what they saw in movies without training. If someone tried the comically telegraphed overhead stab and ate shit because of it I could see why he would think it's no good but people worldwide have used variations of the icepick grip to great effect.

Will follow up with another post about icepick grip.

Follow up post.

Pic related is a Russian knife used during WW2. The designers of this took a hint from Fairbairn and simply adopted what criminals were using to kill each other, which at the time was puukkos with modified points. Notice the backwards guard, this is because many Russians like to hold their knives in an icepick grip with the blade inwards. You see something similar in Filipino knife fighting which inspired those backwards p'kal knives that people buy because marketing.

>Why do these small knives even exist?

The same reason handguns exist, even though you'd want a rifle for both fighting *and* as a tool - portability and concealability.

To wit, I carry an M1911 daily, but I also own a Gerber Combat Folder, partially serrated - it's "normal" enough to pass as your average pocket knife (it doesn't even have an assisted open,) and the partially-serrated blade is great for tons of mundane tasks (and for emergency things like cutting through a seatbelt in a hurry,) but as you can see, this thing is made with fighting in mind:

http://www.gerbergear.com/Knives/Folding/Applegate-Combat-Folder_45780

This thing is specifically for self-defense in places where I'm not allowed to carry - bought it while I was finishing university. And then there's my fixed blade, which I managed to pick up on sale:

https://www.sogknives.com/seal-pup.html

Pretty much the same design/blade shape as the Seal 2000 knife they sell (very much a fighting knife) but a bit smaller. Picked this because I needed something I could hide under a T-shirt and would hang from an under-shirt harness without getting too uncomfortable or heavy throughout the day. This is also primarily for self-defense - I'd definitely prefer a double-edged fixed blade that's longer and thinner - hell, the M7 bayonet repo I picked up for $20 bucks is technically better designed for fighting - but double-edged knives are illegal in my state unless carried and used as a hunting knife. Single edged, however, is fine - as big as you damn well please. And the SOG even comes with a pocket on the sheath that I keep a small survival kit in - "see officer, this is my survival knife, I just ran into town for some groceries before heading out to our cabin, was gonna get some 'yote hunting time in before nightfall," etc, etc.

I have this tiny-ass little Buck jackknife with an American Flag decoration on the side - put that in a mini survival kit. Everything's situational.
>>
>>35050845
>That source looks on par with pic related.

Just judging the advice on that page by its own merits, I'd say it's pretty straightforward and down to earth. Especially note the bit where he says not to use a saber grip - saber grips are perfectly valid, and some combat knives even have a spot on the grip or back part of the blade to accommodate the thumb being placed there. It's great for superior blade control.

But - exactly as that book says - it's less sturdy than just wrapping the handle in the firmest "hammer" grip you can. And frankly, a saber grip is SOP for... well, *sabers.* Anyone needing the finer blade control on a goddamn rinky-dink knife is someone who knows what the fuck they're doing, and won't be reading any books to understand knife fighting because they've been trained by highspeedlowdragOPERATORZ. Knives are very easy to kill with and very hard to not be killed by; for the purposes of educating Joe Blow in how to defend oneself, skipping the nuanced explanation and just saying DON'T FUCKIN DO THIS, DO THIS INSTEAD is the way to go.
>>
>>35059115
I find the weight of my climber perfect anything bigger than that i don't really know, pliers aren't gonna be as good as a leatherman or something like that. Personally i don't like the dedicated phillips because its kind of redundant and i prefer using the can opener, but the great thing about SAKs is there are so many they can fill many rolls. I'd say the spartan or regular tinker are probably the best bet for you if you don't see yourself using the scissors and want to save on bulk. 2 or 3 layers is the ideal thiccness IMO

I could kill you, anon. And it would be as easy as fucking yo momma on two dollar Tuesday. Your cumulative lives, everyone on this board besides me, have less meaning to me than an ant crawling through my garden. If pressing a button to kill every last one of you meant that I could sleep for one more minute tonight, I'd do it in a heartbeat. When you attain as many weapons as I have collected over the years, formal martial arts training becomes utterly irrelevant. I don't need to know how to fight. I could just kill and kill and kill and never stop because I have a virtually endless supply of weapons and potential, lethal avenues for the destruction and disposal which is /b/. So the next time you fuck with someone, that someone better not be me. Beware. BEWARE.

I picked up this Spyderco Manix 2 a couple weeks ago. It has an S90V core sandwiched between CPM 154. It was hard to get a good picture of the steel change but it's very pretty. The grip is very rough with a ton of micro knurling in the carbon fiber. The lock mechanism is still very stiff with a ton of spring pressure. It can be closed one handed, but I prefer to use two with it.

Nice. I was tempted to pick it up, but decided not to. Even though I have a dozen different spydercos, i've never held a manix.

objectively, as a utilitarian item for field ops, is the bulgarian circle 10 ak-74 bayonet a good knife? I would have always assumed yes but then i saw nutnfancy's test where he broke one. Yes i know the guy is an idiot. Yes i know the bayonet is made of harder steel so it can cut wire and is therefore inherently more brittle. Yes i know no knife is designed to be banged against rocks. deal is, i'm a "if i own it i'll use it" kind of collector and i want to know if it's a good idea to carry this innawoods or better find something else. i wouldnt enjoy breaking one after the hassle it was to find it in the first place

>CPM M4 and something completely shit, you need to know just how bad a blade steel can be to fully appreciate stuff like 204p and 3v. Get something from a flea market for $10

A lot of the issue is that Chinese knife makers do completely garbage who gives a fuck heat treatments on those knives, much moreso than the steel choice itself. Add to that that most cheap Chinese made knives are mercilessly power sharpened without any cooling (burning the edge) and you can easily end up with awful edge performance that is only tangentially related to steel choice.
>>
>>35052714
You either practice freehand sharpening enough on cheap knives to develop the muscle memory to hold an angle accurately enough not to scratch the primary grind on the knives you sharpen or you buy a guided system.

Actually even better is to not give a fuck about scratches on the primary grind of a cutting tool, but that doesn't answer your question.
>>
>>35060519
>Is 220 grain coarse enough?
I'd want to go even coarser for reprofiling, much less for removing as much blade height as that picture suggests.

Google Baryonx and go buy an American Mutt stone if you want to sharpen out that much damage. It's ~60 grit . Next best option would be a Norton Crystolon coarse oilstone used with mineral oil (~80 grit). Both with be massively faster than anything else you could use for the job.

Using 3 micron diamond lapping film on balsa wood is basically cheating. It's easy as hell, and leaves an apex that retains similar slicing aggression to a DMT XXF finish.

I sharpened the edge bevel using an Atoma 1200 followed by a DMT XXF and then used the lapping film strop to create a convex microbevel.

How to avoid making a very rust-unfriendly knife avoid getting rusty while camping? I use it to break some twigs and such.

I was thinking about just buying a larger sheath and padding it up with something that soaks oil well, and soaking it in oil before I leave. Then I sew a patch of cloth to clean it and sew more leather above it, closing it down with velcro but allowing me to get it up to expose the cloth.

Thus I can give it a quick cleaning to remove any liquid and then I sheath her in the oil rag.

Do you think this would work? It is a spring steel custom knife. Very resistant, but it rusts like a bitch.
>>
I sometimes want to buy a fixed blade knife, but I feel like you look really autistic walking around with it on your belt like it's a dagger/sword. Texas just made it legal to walk around with bowie knives, but walking around with one in public seems like you're asking for trouble. Some redneck military guy came into the store I work at one time and he had a bowie knife on his belt like a fucking dagger, I just feel like he wanted attention.

I always preferred pocket knives because you can conceal them. I know you can buy like a leg sheath or whatever and keep it strapped to your leg, seems a bit excessive to walk around in public with a bowie knife though, I mean why would you need such a large knife? A pocket knife should suffice just fine, a bowie knife seems overkill unless you're going camping or hunting. People who walk around with daggers and bowie knives seem like they're just looking for attention/trouble.

Yes. Modern damascus steel is just pattern welded steel, and pattern welded steel inherently must have heat treatment trade-offs to account for the slightly different optimal heat treatments for the two steels pattern welded together. It will thus be inferior to an optimally heat treated monosteel.

What makes lapping film and balsa wood ideal for stropping? How does it compare to other abrasive (compound, leftover stone swarf, etc.) and stropping material (leather, etc.)?
>>
>>35072732
In general, for using stropping on utility knives where you would like to retain some slicing aggression on the apex, applying abrasive to flexible surfaces like balsa wood or leather runs into a couple of main problems.

Firstly the grit gets embedded some distance into the surface, limiting the scratch depth to which the abrasive can, and secondly the pliability of the surface means that he abrasive in it tends to deflect away from the surface of the apex as you strop, again reducing scratch depth relative to abrasive particle size.

Worse still, these factors operate in a highly non-linear fashion, such that going from 1 micron diamond on a strop to 16 micron diamond on a strop produces a realtively small change in the toothiness of the apex left by stropping on that substance. It's not really until using 30+ micron diamond or CBN at very low force that you can start to get high push cutting ability combined with a decent amount of slicing aggression.

By comparison, lapping films remove the problem of the grit embedding in the surface in a non-linear fashion, and they significantly reduce the ability of the abrasive to be deflected away from the apex as you strop (because the particles cannot sink further into the surface). As a result, you get more slicing aggression from 3u diamond film on balsa than 16 micron diamond grit directly applied to the balsa, while getting similar levels of push cutting sharpness.

Additionally, the lapping film has less of a risk of rounding over the apex as it cannot curl around the apex as much as the balsa with compound on it can.

>>
>>35075536
Using lapping film on glass lapping plates would be edge-trailing sharpening rather than stropping. To my mind, stropping requires the use of a compressible surface that can deflect around the apex to some non-zero extent.

Balsa is an excellent choice for stropping as it less pliable than leather, and therefore doesn't induce as much of a microscopic convex to the apex of the edge as a more pliable surface would. With too much pressure, however, you can still end up excessively rounding over the apex by inducing too much curvature. Lapping film on balsa mitigates this risk because the film both limits the ability of the balsa to curl around the apex excessively, and reduces the pressure necessary to get the abrasive on the strop to cut to the desired scratch depth.
