The Army puts floats trial balloons for this constantly. Nothing ever comes of it. Nothing will come of it this time. Nothing will come of it next time. Nothing will come if it ever.

Really, UN says that we have to use ball ammo but doesn't mind when we drop bombs of molten lead on them.
I don't get the human race. They contradict themselves too much.

that only applies to official states or something like that though, that's why we can use chem weapons on terrorists.

>Interim Combat Service Rifle will replace the M4 carbine
Ah, like how the XM8, XM29, SPIW, G11, M16E2, Steyr ACR, SCAR and 416 were supposed to at various points in the last 50 years. Only one that actually has the innovation to stand a chance at adoption is the LSAT, and the rifle component probably wont see the light of day until the LMG has proven itself.
>>
They do this every 5 years or so. They do their tests and cost calculations and realize that sticking with the m4 is better.

Carrying 210 rounds of 5.56 is better than 100 of 7.62. 7.62 rifles are heavier too.

apparently the SCAR was not a matter of not being better, but just not being better enough.
special forces love it and the military had to order a bunch of conversion kits to turn the mk18s into mk17s.
>>
>>35028091
you have to take the SCAR program in context when the M4 tdp was to maximize parts compatibility with the M16A2. After all the M4/M4A1 upgrades in the early 2000s, the M4 was equal to the Mk16.

SOF like the Mk17 because the only other 7.62 battle rifle available was the EBR M14 (shit) and KAC SR25.
>>
>>35028119
oops, confused mk18 and mk16.
>>
How about that Knight Armament M110K5, would that work?
>>
>>35028119
Do they have access to HK 417s? There are SBR variants of that, like the SCAR.
>>
why don't they just make soldiers train harder so they can handle carrying .308?
different individuals don't have limits on how strong they can be within reason (excepting women),
i see no reason as to why you can't get your average male soldier strong enough to carry it.
>>
>>35028146
Fits all criteria except barrel length, though I wonder if the 14" barrel is the reason its so light.
>>
>>35028165
but if they want to replace a carbine what are they asking for rifle lengths>
>>
>>35028163
Because the current kit is already ridiculously overweight with the M4. More muscle doesn't help much when the current weight is grinding your joints up.

Lol wut.
The carry capacity for your average trooper doing an extended on foot patrol has more or less been the same for past 3000 years.

Unless you're adding rugged exoskeletons or robot gophers you ain't convincing anyone to set a decent pace loaded up with heavy bullshit.

Replacement is mistake. And they fall in the same trap agsain.

On the other hand supplementing squad with high performance DMR is thing that was need to be done 40 years ago but is buried under "replacement " over and over again.
>>
The army loves to spend their budget, that way they can justify asking for the same, or more, the next year.

Vietnam taught the US that the team with the most ammo, usually wins.

.308 Auto loading rifles, like the SCAR 17 are lighter than ever. But the SCAR 16, in 5.56, is roughly the same rifle, roughly the same sized package, and carries more ammo. 5.56 isn't as effective, but it's good enough.

Makes no sense to switch. IMO it's just the army spending money under the guise of "technological development"
>>
>>35028088
ICSR trials will be with a 210 round load of .308
>>
>>35026440
What circular logic led you to believe the Army was going to replace the M4A1 with the 416?

Just because you look for something doesn't mean you will find it.
Someone still has to make the gun they want, and so far no one has.
>>
>>35029180
and then realize how heavy that is compared to 5.56

this.

In related news, DARPA is asking for an all-in-one turnkey solution for all their simulation and CAD format conversion woes. BUT - instead of writing it up as converting all existing data over to an internal or classified format accessible only to contractors and engineers AND commissioning a completely new software suite to go along with it (LIKE THEY SHOULD), they basically want more of exactly what they already have - a tangled fuckweb of conversion tools and inconsistencies between formats that take days to iron out PER FILE.

These problems have existed for the past 30 years, and there is no reason to believe they will change in the next 5 or 10.
>>
the .308 rifle will only be given to grunts when in a theater that demands it. everyone else, everywhere else, will still be using a M4.

i think the biggest problem. is that the army will have to train 300+ meter shooting to most of the army. they'll also need to issue optics more poweful than an ACOG.

You're not even going to fucking wait until you have the new design before you shit out tax money for a different replacement?? And arent the 416's already on order?? Are we literally going to be changing out rifles every year now or something?
And what about trials, commissions, bringing in new designs and rifles like we used to do? Holyshit America, just give into the 6.5 wet dream and stop the bullshit
>>

>Holyshit America, just give into the 6.5 wet dream and stop the bullshit
It's been speculated that's what they want to do and will eventually re-barrel a potential .308 rifle to some 6.5 offering. .260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmoor would fit the bill as far as ease of conversion.
>>
>>35028090
Theyre not. You just cant use them when there is a good risk of burning civvies. They are also bullet magnets.

>>
>>35032647

The SCAR or a variant is probably in the running.
>>
>>35034855
It's too expensive. I'm pretty sure they're looking for something cheaper than the M110A1 or they would have just bought more of those with shorter barrels.

That's somewhere around how many infantrymen there are in active duty.
>>

The scar is actually super cheap to make, fn just likes to gouge the civilian market. The army would get them at about the same price as a new m4.

>>
>>35035362

>>
>>35028091

SOCOM set the requirements.
SOCOM conducted the testing.
SOCOM moved the goalposts as requirements kept being added over 7 years.

At any time during these seven years SOCOM could have had M4s and M16s and sent the bill to the regular Army budget.

So what changed? In 2009 the Democrats slashed SOCOM's budget by 15% across the board and added an extra battalion that needed to be recruited, trained and equipped for every group. In 2010 these budget cuts hit and the SCAR program was scaled back.

SOCOM's PR worded their press release to the blogs so that the rifle would be blamed on "limited funds" without detailing the budget cuts and personnel requirements. Their goal was to get people to the conclusion that it was the rifle that was at fault (despite meeting or exceeding all of the requirements)... and not their new bosses in the administration.

Despite this a month later all variants of the SCAR passed Milestone C certification including the Mk16. They can order some at any time without further testing if they had the budget.
