What you're looking at is basically a before/after of the same receiver. Not technically true because it's two different receivers in the same image. But the bottom receiver started exactly the same as the top.

Some guy wanted full auto 100-series clones, so he sent his transferable Chinese machine guns to POHF who then totally redid them. Notice he added the receiver stampings and everything.

So, they said that Saiga. 223 mags are shaped more like 7.62 mags. They are thicker, but still like 74 mags. Like a Beryl mag but more material. I still don't know if I should hack it up. I take it the Saiga mags were made for the sporter Saiga, and that's it?

It was just a 100% impulse buy (saw it online at SHOT coverage and went "near" and bought it the week of SHOT) and I needed money to pay for getting my kit built but I blew most of it on other AK things instead, I only lost like $100 out of it which isn't that bad. Depends on what you have already and what you want. the AR556 will be a good starter gun. Easy to accessorize, and commonly available parts and ammo. AKs aren't difficult to own, but it's a different beast.

Yeah, you're right. I've only done 100 conversions on Saigas, which have the newer trunnion design. Doesn't seem too different thought, just have to weld up the forward trunnion rivet hole if you go from akm to 100 folder or another 74 trunnion.

You don't need to pull the barrel for the trunnion install or the front latch cuts. For the front latch you just have to drill a little into the bottom of the front trunnion so the pin has a place to fit.

The majority of cheap AR barrels are overgassed from the factory since people like to run cheap, weak steel case ammo, meaning that whenever you run full power 5.56 you get a bunch of gas blowback. Add in the fact that most people don't understand why H buffers are a thing and you get issues.
