DIs used to be way more abusive than they are now. It used to be commonplace for them to strike or even beat recruits that pissed them off.
Contrary to popular belief, most of the troops in Vietnam were volunteers. Recruiting practices were still relaxed though (as they always are during a war). You had a lot of guys that would normally get rejected who got pushed into service because they needed more boots.

Well the scene where Pyle shoots Hartman is very surreal. What's the weird dripping noise, Pyle peeing? And why is there absolutely no explanation or mention of the Pyle incident afterwards? The plot would be exactly the same without the Pyle incident, and this leads to the only natural conclusion which is that Pyle never shot Hartman or himself.

Why did Pyle kill his DI and nobody else if they were the one to break him?

Also, why are corpses treated like the most insane thing you'll ever see? They act as though a corpse reveal or similar sight will completely blow your mind and make you extremely moved.

Platoon had a WAY larger impact on my views, and seriously changed the way I thought about things. Friendly fire and Mutiny over stuff like rape and complete sociopathic behavior is much more striking than just OOH DEAD BOI.

I mean, the whole first 1/3rd of the movie with Pyle's arch was so much more interesting and impactful than the rest of the movie that it really ruins the rest, desu just the boot section is really the only part worth watching.
