Initial versions were, in fact, stamped steel, however the USSR did not have the production capacity to deliver on time.
Also needed the Germans to show them how to properly into stamped steel, which is where the myth probably comes from.


Also, before the AK, Kalashnikov submitted a design that essentially was a Stg. 44 copy, which was rejected for being utter garbage.

The AK, on top of having a completely different internal mechanism, incorporates features and design aspects from earlier weapons that were very much NOT the STG, and was made around a cartridge that had been in development before the STG even existed.

The whole basis for the "Slavs ripped off the German assault rifle for their own" meme originates from Schmeisser being forced to work under Kalashnikov. What the mouth-breathers who parrot this fail to mention is that he was almost entirely focused on supplying the Russians with a method to produce a stamped rifle. There is no evidence whatsoever that his involvement went beyond this, and if they wanted to rip off the STG they fucking would have instead of making an entirely different rifle that had no resemblance whatsoever save for general external appearance and the fact that it fired an intermediate .30 round.

The whole concept behind the STG was to have a cheap, stamped metal receiver that could be manufactured easily and would house the FCG group, while the important, pressure containing part, the front trunnion, would be made of high quality steel so it could withstand the pressures of a cartridge being fired. This is EXACTLY the same concept behind the original AK. Before the type 2 and type 3 milled receivers, there was the type one which was stamped, just like the STG, and had a high quality steel insert (the trunnion) just like the STG. The AK is not a copy of the STG, as many have said the internals are fairly different. But the concept behind the guns are identical, and clearly related. And anyone who says the Russians didn't take inspiration from the design is a fucking moron.
