The brain is a weird organ. There are documented cases of people losing massive sections of it and still being functional citizens, albeit with minor quirks. Most people die immediately from sever head trauma, yes, but its not unheard of for people to survive/recover.

I also remember seeing a news story about a kid that got shot in the head and survived. He lost almost an entire hemisphere of brain matter, but lived. His head looked like a half deflated basketball.

I heard another story of a guy that shot himself in the head in a suicide attempt. Bullet went straight through his head from ear to ear. He died, but from blood loss, not from CNS trauma.

When I was working at St. Lukes in Boise, we had a patient who came in after being shot 118 times by the police with both 0.40 pistols and .223 rifles and survived. 7 head shots, 11 to the heart and aorta, 9 to the femoral arteries. Any one of those 27 should have been fatal in 2 minutes. Somehow he survived all of them.

Most badass though has to be Yogendra Singh Yadav, who when fighting in the freaking himilayas takes 6 bullets (shattering his right arm and leg) climbing a 300 foot cliff, makes it to the top, takes more bullets blows up a machinegun nest with a grenade, takes even more bullets (17 total), then goes into a second machinegun nest and by hand kills 4 Pakistanis soldiers. The climb, and fights where won with a completely shattered arm and leg, and he survived the 12 hours wait before he could be medivaced.

oh and Simo Hayha took a high powered rifle shot to the face and survived.

Hell look at Roy Benavidez, that guy had seven gunshot wounds, 28 shrapnel wounds, was clubbed with a rifle butt in the back of the head and mouth, had a destroyed lung, and stabbed a guy to death after he himself was stabbed and the guy lived. This of course is after he was blown up by a landmine and forced himself to walk again. Another good example of that is the guy in Australia who shot himself in the chest with a shotgun, then in the head with a pistol, then again in the head with a shotgun, and finally in the heart with the shotgun which killed him. People can be both fragile and oddly durable.

There is an extra issue with point-blank shoots, the got and still expanding gases from the barrel follow the bullet into the wound, usually causing the area around the entry wound to get burn and damaged by the gases expanding under the layers of the skin.
