Level III hard plates stop slug without problem without causing serious injury. kevlar on the other hand stops slugs but the energy really can mush something inside. the difference is the area of impact (pressure and all that physical stuff).

Speed is king in defeating armor keep that in mind, for example a level IIIA kevlar will stop the slug but the energy making a gigantic back deformation that could kill u, the .308 will go through and kill u.
in a level III hard plate the slug will stop and not mush ur organs, the .308 will also stop but the back deformation will be bigger but will not cause damage

You need to understand the difference between soft armor and hard armor. Lvl 4 Hard armor will stop a shotgun blast and save you, and will do the same with .308

Soft armor will stop a shotgun blast but still allow it to damage you, but will not stop .308

Unless a penetration or massive cave-in happens, the plate absorbs and spreads the shock around its entire area, dampening the felt hit a great deal. If there's also soft panels behind the plate, you may literally feel nothing at all.

I'd love to see that, as NIJ level 4 is designed to stop especially armor piercing variants of most common rifle- & intermediate rounds, including .30-06 AP rounds. Many of them are even rated to stop at least one .50cal BMG shot, though that behemoth of a bullet will almost certainly kill you none the less.
