The QBZ as issued by the PLA isn't the same as the QBZ that's sold to Canada.

Reviews aren't awful, but they're mixed, there's some features which are disliked (the awkward safety is one, the QZB97 wasn't updated like the QZB95 was). Some rifles seem to not like some mags like LAR15 mags, and some of the parts are flimsy.
Of course, some have no trouble with LAR15 mags, and take no issues with it's quirks, some of it can be changed with aftermarket parts.
It's overall better than a KelTec SU16, and it's DEFINITELY better than the Designated Shitting Rifle

If your rifle is gassing its users, it doesn't work. The holes are always in different spots as if the holes were drilled and reamed on a sixty year old manual mill whose user doesn't know what "backlash" is, it's killed more users than the enemies, and one last thing, this rifle is so shit that there's dogshit literally in this picture, right under the sling about halfway down the barrel.
