Is there a better gun bluing method than this? I want to blue mine but this stuff is expensive at $30 a set and there isn't a lot of the solution.

I've used it before to refinish an old bolt-action Ithaca .410. The remover and blue are fine but I would recommend buying an industrial-strength degreaser and soaking the metal stuff in a strong solution of degreaser and very hot water. Rinse well with very hot water and let it air-dry. Use gloves to prevent oils on your hands from transferring to the metal throughout the entire process. The blue won't take if there is any oil at all on the surface of the metal.

Also, the chemicals smell really, really nasty. You'll remember the smell for years.
>>
>>35009000
Did you end up using the whole set just to blue one gun?
>>
>>35009019
I had some blue left over but ran out of the blue & rust remover. I think if the gun had been in better condition I could have had enough for two guns.
>>
Vinegar and steel wool to remove old finish, brake parts cleaner to clean and degrease, the bluing agent for new blue. Should be $17-20

It actually came out pretty well
You'd be better off using lye and stuff honestly, but I couldn't find any and didn't want to order online. Most of the time is preparing the metal for bluing.
>>
can someone explain the actual chemical process of bluing and why you can just buy it in a bottle?
>>
>>35010235
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_(steel)

Put simply, you cause the surface steel to oxidize into something else, either black oxide or brown rust. Bottled bluing really just dyes the surface with a few coats of whatever. Hot bluing like this guy did >>35010130 (good job, btw) is much more durable. Parkerization is probably more hardy, but it's not as aesthetically pleasing and (I think) harder to do at home.
>>
>>35010757
Nah. Parking is just a different chemical. So I'd rate it as similar to hot blueing as far as difficulty. But obviously harder than cold bluing. Same old bubbling tanks of hot and dangerous stuff that blinds you instantly and slowly eats away at stuff around you. And the same need for a oil free and clean surface.
>>
You only need the actual blueing part of that set. The other two are inferior to other cheaper products.

Where can i find some industrial strength degreaser at? Can I just find some st walmart or a hardware store or would I need to look at Home Depot or somewhere big?
>>
>>35011218
Uh. Rubbing alcohol, kerosene, gasoline, etc.
>>
>>35011218
Dish soap, hot water and a clean brush for the bulk of it, followed by acetone, starting fluid (ether), denatured alcohol, or electrical part cleaner for the cracks and crevices. Wearing gloves is not optional.
>>
>>35011218
I boil in Lysol.

Why does the length of this CZ 75's grip look so short

Can you post some pics of that in sunlight? or under direct light instead of the indirect light ive seen in all your glamour shots, Ive been thinking about doing this for a while, but im unsure about the color of it.

that stuff looks good but doesn't do good to protect nothing
go hot blue but it's expensive
>>
>>35008931
if you're going to use that buy the liter for $50 you're going to end up going back for more over and over I promise
>>
>>35012831
does it darken with more applications or what?
>>
>>35012843
yes. depends what you're bluing. if you're doing a long arm and only use those 3 bottles it's going to look baby blue
I used about a liter on a Swiss 96/11 and it came out a royal blue. I stained the stock red and it looked good with that so I stopped but if you want a good dark blue on a long arm you're going to need a lot.
>>
>>35012843
also listen to>>35009000
degreasing is the most important step
>>
>>35012817
my god, dude
>>
>>35012909
well I'm new to posting in this here thread but even if it COULD blue with grease shit on there... it would be all uneven and blotchy, who would want that?
>>
Considering doing this to my SKS's bolt and carrier. Already used it on my Hi Power slide, turned out a nice solid black.
>>
>>35012928
what faget
>>
>>35012932
if it has anything on it it won't take at all
just trust me
>>
>>35011218

Trisodium Phosphate and hot water works breddy gud, but it's granular so definitely follow with a thorough rinse.

>Home Depot, paint section.
>>
>>35008931
Yes.
Caustic Hot Salt Bluing

and Slow Rust Bluing.
>>
>>35008931
I used birchwood casey, got inconsistent results. I know use Oxphoblue, gives a nice dark blue. can be had on amazon or brownells or at cabelas.
>>
>>35010166
What gun?
>>
>>35008931
Literally any method of bluing is better than cold blue. Avoid like the plague. Cold blue is shit.
>>
>>35013745
Not that anon, but interested in these two methods. Would they work on magazines? Have an infographic or good video link?
>>
>>35008931
Cold bluing turns out pretty shitty, and from what I've heard, offers no rust protection because it doesn't create whatever oxide (ferric?) that is blue rust. Try a hot blue method, or pay someone who knows how to do it.
>>
>>35010130
Is there a length of time you need to immerse?
>>
>>35017848
This

Hot blue like >>35010130 is many times better in appearance and durability. Rust bluing is many times better than hot.

If $30 strikes you as "expensive" then just spray paint the thing.
