Why did everyone switch from side feed to bottom feed guns?
Shooting stance, I would guess.
I'm presuming it's because having the gun extend on three different axes makes it more irritating to handle and store.
Flat gun better.

Balance
Better springs

balance and use of the weapon indoors being as it's just a sub machine gun, it'd be most effective indoors. I'd imagine a mag out to the sides would get annoying hitting when rushing a room

Real guns have curves you fucking figot

because side-feeding is shitty in close-quarters you retard.

Because people realized that when you are using a SMG, you're probably fighting through close environments and not proned out trying to snipe shit with an open bolt weapon.

springs
Namely; better ones
Same reason many old timey MGs had top loaded mags

metallurgy in general, I should think. Stronger springs required less flimsy feed lips too. I would think the move to stamped parts made all of those older SMG box mags big levers on flimsier receivers but I guess you don't need as much heavy duty milled blocks to resist that shit if you've got better metals.
