Any military decisions that leaves you scratching your head?
Russia is testing the Ka-52K naval attack helicopter on the Admiral Gorshkov frigate. It will carry extra fuel tanks and 9M100 missiles. The 'reason' for this is that instead of the Ka-27 Helix that acts as an Anti Submarine Helicopter, the Ka-52K will act as the ship's AESA OTH radar against sea skimmers that the ship's sensors might've missed. It carries fuel tanks for hover time and missiles that have their own radars to take out incoming missiles.
They're not using the Helix because the ship already has a bow sonar and a towed array. Not to mention that the Kaliber ASROC has a huge range.
It's as stupid as that guy who likes buying Chinese.

Helicopter AEWs are pretty flexible given they can lillypad off anything with a patch of flat deck.
Only problem with this is that Admiral Gorshkov frigates will need to deploy in pairs or groups to maintain constant coverage because they can't support two helicopters.

It's just a frigate so of course it will move out in groups. The Project 20381 corvettes are their designated ASuW ships so they'll carry the Ka-27.
They're trying different combinations for their upcoming modular multi purpose Project 22160 patrol ships. And this is one of them.

Not really.It's not the 60's. A dipping sonar is not going to help you localize a submarine better than a towed array and hull sonar on a ship.
Helicopters are good for delivering weapons onto the submarine but the Russians have plenty of other weapons to deliver ASW weapons at range.

Uhhh, yeah no.
ASW is primarily conducted by helicopters. People like keeping submarines at arms length for good reason - If you're shooting from the ship you've done something really, really wrong.

Ka-52K supposed to be main damage dealer on Mistral-class ships. Ka-52K need an advanced radar, why not use it for good? Also, they test it with Kh-35 missiles. It look stupid because you see only part of tests and because there are no Mistrals for Russia.
