Am I interpreting this image of a T-72 in Tal Afar correctly?

Am I interpreting this image of a T-72 in Tal Afar correctly? I see a T-72 with its gun barrel painted partly black to disguise it as some other tank. Are they trying to make a T-72 look like a T-55?

Considering everything around them is tan, I don't see how it would work to hide part of the barrel. Does it obscure it from surveillance drones and planes?
