I made a bunch of threads two weeks ago about ordering replica armor from eBay. Many of you said that it was completely historically inaccurate and that the great helm wasn't even used with plate armor, but I decided to risk it and go ahead buying it because it was cheap anyway. And well...here are the results.

>>34981175
It is made in India, it is going to be shit.

The sellers were all from India since they dominate the replica market but most of them had good feedback so I could risk buying one. After two weeks my first order arrived in a huge box. It was pretty heavy, the UPS guy had to help me load it inside the house.

It was a pain in the ass unpacking and assembling it though. It was coated completely in oil to prevent rusting, which must be a big problem in India due to the humidity.

...only to have several of the rivets snap out of place. The build quality was terrible! They didn't even hammer the rivets in properly, so I had to spend yet more time making sure it wouldn't fall apart!

Don't know what else you were expecting really, Indians cannot make anything worth boasting about.

Now, fortunately I had asked /k/ for advice about this and I believe it was KM who said that the rest of the mismatched armor was based on 15th century armor. So after a bit of digging I found another set of replicas - a burgonet with a better looking breastplate.

>>
>>34981325
Using this suit for HEMA would be a great laugh, it would be crushed within minutes and trap OPs limbs in a pinch.
>>
How's the mobility?
Put on the armor and do some basic exercises.

I'm already seeing OPs tin can started at $300.

And so finally I settled in on the burgonet helm. It's still not historically accurate but it does look more like what 16th century burgonet armor was. Overall I'm pleased with the results, especially considering how expensive real armor is for thousands of thousands of dollars more. I still need to do a lot more work on it and fix the rivets more and make the other pieces fit better so this is going to be quite a project.

>>34981315
Feels like a $400 suit of armor. 16 gauge metal is roughly as thick as a metal bucket, I could bend it by hand with enough force.

>>34981325
>>34981338
Absolutely terrible, it was just meant as a display piece. And to make matters worse I'm a manlet and this armor is over 6 feet tall so it fits extremely uncomfortably. I'm planning on grinding out the edges to shorten the armor and make it fit on me but it's going to be a lot of work removing and re-riveting it back in place.

Real armor used by those guys is extremely expensive, you're looking at $300 just for a proper leather gambeson. Individual plate pieces can cost thousands.

Plenty of historical armour, we may even dare say most of it, are plain iron or steel so low in carbon that it may as well be plain iron as far as its response to heat treatment goes. So that would be one of few things that isn't wrong here.

that is why i said you should build your kit one piece at a time, so instead of buying a full set of shitty armour, you could buy a cuirass or a pair of gauntlets etc and move on from there to the next piece

But it'd just be mismatched though wouldn't it, buying separate pieces from different manufacturers?

Anyway I'll work on this one for now. My biggest problem right now is finding rivets to attach the tassets to the breastplate. Home Depot or Lowes doesn't sell these kind of rivets used for armor at all.
>>

>>34982120
If you want to wear armour you need to have it made for you. If you want to just look at it you can buy period-accurate pieces one after the other. Stop buying this cheap trash immediately in any case.
But thanks for the expensive joke, I was almost in tears when I saw the Magneto hat.

It can match as well as it needs to as long as you're consistent in what you ask for.

I just plan on displaying it most of the time, it doesn't have to be particularly well made as long as it just looks passable enough to be armor. There's just no way I'll be able to buy anything better for less than $5000 elsewhere so this will help pass the time until I have more money years from now.

I found a real set of that armor being sold on eBay. Wasn't too expensive either, it only sold for $7500. Might as well buy the real thing than a replica.

Might be real, might not. But at least with forged antiques they have to put in some degree of effort making it look right.
>>
OP. I hope you didn't remove the oil from the armor. Looks to me like it is all going to rust fiercely at the slightest provocation. And stain. Even touching it with your bare hands is going to leave marks; well the humidity on your skin is. The guys who could afford this kind of armor back in the day had people who spent hours polishing it after every time it was worn and before it was fitted on. If you don't coat it that thing will age quick and not in a good way.
>>
>>34981239

Just trying to make do with what limited resources I have, I'm kinda having fun taking a crash course in backyard armoring as I try and fix this. Already replaced some of the bad rivets on one leg and managed to trim it up enough so that it fits my leg properly now.
