When my wife and I have a kid or two they're going to learn how to be safe around guns as soon as they understand words.
Safety comes first and learning to shoot comes when they can hold the gun on their own or when they want to learn with help.

I'd start with a bb gun around 5-6. Teach them the fundamentals/safety rules then move up to a 22 for a few years.

I was taught on little .22 bolt action baby guns in the cub scouts. That woulda been like 6-9 somewhere.

Started with a Ruger Target Pistol at 5. Got a Red Ryder at 6. There isnt any kind of linear progression you should follow, just do what they are comfortable with.

When my dad was growing up his dad's motto for guns was if you can hold it you can use it. Dad and all his brothers were sent out to the grandparents farm at 6-7 and spend their time walking around it with .22's shooting gophers and other varmits. Kinda crazy how much has changed in a couple generations
