My recent fixation has been on the idea of building a really short rifle as a (stalk) hunt/truck gun/do-anything within 150 yards sorta thing.
The rifle itself doesn't really matter so much to me, beyond being as compact as possible while still being ergonomic and comfortable to shoot.
The real issue lies with the cartridge. What cartridges (commercial or wildcat/unobtainium) function well out of really short barrels? Like, 10-12" max, not including a brake or suppressor.
Ideally I'd want something that could theoretically meet the bare minimum penetration requirements for killing a moose at close range while not having an unreasonable amount of recoil/barrel wear. Obviously I need to work out expected velocity ranges and choose projectiles accordingly, but I don't know where to start.
Any ideas?

interesting idea OP.
This might be a good example of Jeff Cooper's thumper cartridge thing. 338 federal is my vote

.300 blackout

To take down something like a moose, you're going to need to throw a lot of weight at it from that short of a barrel. Some straight-walled .45 like .45/70 or .450 Bushmaster would work pretty well. I'd still try and go with a 14.5" barrel minimum plus a pinned compensator to get around SBR status.

150gr .300 blackout has enough power to take down a moose .
>>34974807
if you say so m8. I personally wouldn't rely on it
>shot placement yada yada yada
.277 WLV is supposed to work well out of SBR lengths, too.
>>34975159
Definitely shot placement comrade
I'm debating if I wanna convert my .300 blk AR pistol into an sbr and register it on my gun trust
>>34974073
AR's are cheap right about now you could build an AR pistol in .300 blk and have a 450$ truck gun you can take anywhere you can take a pistol
>>34974073
450 bushmaster or .50 memewulf
>>34977290
only AR I would SBR would be a colt 901
just get a maxim pdw brace for the pistol

Nty
A shock wave brace is cheaper looks nifty as fuck though like fuck the atf design orientation
