As we all know, fall is coming. Lets start a friendly hunting thread to get hyped for the season. My roommate and I plan on going to his uncle's property to do some light squirrel hunting when it gets nice out. I'm considering bringing my dog, but he is a little autistic to be honest.

Lets get this going
>what ya huntin
>what caliber u shootan
>what are your goals
>private or public land

sidenote: is .308 for squirrel autistic or fun?

I was going to go look for geese with my brother now, but he overslept and there's a gale blowing. I'm certain the two events are connected somehow, as the weather has been beautiful the whole week. I was going to bring my dad's old Baikal single barrel shotgun and my rifle, but it just didn't work out now. Maybe see about it this evening.

>light squirrel hunting
As opposed to heavy squirrel hunting? I would think that heavy squirrels would have more meat.
>>
>>34973740
Got out late last year for squirrel hunting. Didn't see a damn squirrel, let alone get a shot at one. They taunted me on the road the drive home though.

If serious about 308, you can have light loads with a 308 that are fine small game getters. Have to load them yourself though.

Neither, its just plain ol' retarded. Use your .22.

>what ya huntin
Squirrel is in now. Dove opens the 1st. Archery deer opens the 15th (I think). Teal and early goose opens the 7th. I've got a combo mule deer/antelope hunt scheduled last week of September, will also shoot some P-dogs if I'm successful or get there a day early.
>what caliber u shootan
.22lr or .410 for squirrels. 28ga for dove, might maybe shoot my 28ga for teal if there aren't any geese around otherwise 12ga for teal and geese. .243 for antelope and mulies. 60lb recurve for durr.
>goals
Have fun and put meat in the freezer
>private or public

.308 is absurdly overpowered for squirrels, even the lightest loads will blow them to bits.

Rifle/Pistol: .22 LR, .17 HMR, .22 Mag F
For the last two, you must take headshot or you'll ruin a lot of meat.

Shotgun: .410 or 20 gauge. 12 gauge is really too much gun.

When hunting them with rifle/pistol, you must have the squirrel backstopped so that if you miss the bullet won't keep going and hurt someone. This generally means you need to shoot them on ground (they need to come down to feed anyway) or if you're very confident in your aim you can take a shot at one on the trunk of a tree using the tree as a backstop.

Shot loses its KE much faster, so you can blast them off limbs safely.

How can I get into hunting by myself? I dont know any hunters other than one, but he's a shitbag who poaches and demands i pay a hundred plus dollars if I kill anything to have it "professionally butchered" by one of his buddies. I dont even like venison, i just want a hide and maybe some antlers.
>>
>>34980435
Don't trust that shitbag, don't even talk to him anymore. I'm in the same boat as you sans shitbag. Start by reading up on your state's hunting regs.
>>
>>34980513
I figured, is it ok to go by myself? What about just taking the hide and skull and leaving the carcass? The same guy gives me a bunch of bullshit about "respecting the animal" when he demands I spend all that money on getting the meat, then I have to give it to someone who wants it if I dont (which I dont), IE him.

I told him thats fucking bullshit, no other hunter ive ever talked to makes such a big deal out of it. I go out of my way to not talk to him about hunting anymore.
>>
>>34980435
>trophy hunting
Faggot. Eat what you kill. Otherwise you're being wasteful.
>>
>>34980551
Look up Hunters for the Hungry. Most places have some way to donate the carcass to things like food pantries or homeless shelters.

DO NOT just leave the carcass. It's illegal in a lot of places and immoral everywhere because it's so wasteful.

I get my deer professionally butchered by the local locker plant, costs me about $35. Alternatively, if you have a garage it's not difficult to do yourself.
>>
>>34980600
I dont like venison, its gross, it shouldnt make a difference what parts I take, either way im killing a deer. Any other argument is emotional bullshit on the same level as peta.
>>
>>34980607
Ill look into that.
>>
>>34980551
Abandoning a carcass with edible meat is a considered wanton wastage and a reg. violation. If you don't want to the meat, give it to a friend or donate it to hunters for the hungry.

Once watched an episode of a reality TV show following Alaska State Troopers. Trooper FLEW to a remote village because of report of an abandoned moose carcass. Manage to track down the who shot and buried moose, who didn't harvest it because it had cysts in the meat. They go dig up dead moose to verify that it indeed had cysts and then lets hunter go. Explains wanton wastage is one of the more serious reg. violations and was prepared to fly the guy back to Anchorage if it were not for mitigating circumstances.

So either use the meat, don't hunt, or find a moose with cysts.
>>
>>34980625
Then feed it to someone else. It's less about wasted life and more about wasted food. That could be on someone else's table but you had to have a rack for your rec room wall and some comfy gloves.

>I dont like venison, its gross
I'm not gonna tell you what you should or shouldn't like, but I think you'll find that harvesting and treating the meat yourself will make it a lot better than what other people rustle up.
The overly simplified how and why of it:
>Shoot the animal
>Field dress the animal
If you can, just take its guts out and
a) Leave it for predators you come back to hunt later that day
b) Refrigerate and use as bait later (lobsters love rotting meat)
Don't dig it down, it'll reek and take longer before predators eat it. Do move it if it's just chilling next to a popular hiking trail or similar, though.
>a) Haul the animal out and part it out in a suitable place
>b) if a) isn't doable, you need to part out the animal where you are:
Skin it, part it out (Roughly - Legs, back, ribs...), chuck the parts in game bags (or in your pack if you don't mind washing it.later. Get it back home, time's a-wasting!
>Hang parts to age
Aging isn't very tricky, though some might make you believe so.
Hang the meat somewhere flies can't get at it, or in game bags. The locale should be well ventilated, dry and cool-ish. A few fans blowing in your garage will suffice.
Temperature is key. The way I learned it, meat needs to age for 40 days/degrees C. That is to say, if the temperature is 8°C, you let it hang for 5 days. If it's 4°C, you let it hang for 10 days... Temperatures shouldn't be much higher than 15 degrees.
Mind, I'm talking room temperature, you don't need anything more specialised than any old thermometer, or the thermostat on the A/C, if you have that in your garage.
>Part the meat out finely once it's aged
This is what some hunters like a butcher for. Nothing Youtube can't teach you, though. Part it out into smaller cuts of meat.
>Vacuum seal and freeze what you won't use right away
>Salt the tongue
>Scrape the bones and make mince of the leftover meat
>Cook soup stock on the bones and freeze that in portion sizes

Get a rifle and practice shooting (something at least .243 or higher caliber). Then take hunter safety (some states require you to prove proficiency with firearms). After that, find public land to hunt and follow all rules your state has in place. Or you can try and find private land to hunt, but remember to keep written permission on you at all times if you don't own the land as a way to stay out of trouble should you meet a warden. If you plan on bird hunting, get a shotgun as well to practice with.>>34980858

Caring for the skin and trophy:
>Skin
Needs to be scraped clean of fat and meat and blood. Once that's done, salt it.
Use fine salt, 7 % of the meat weight. This goes on the meat side of the skin, though it doesn't matter if you get some salt on the fur side.. Leave it for ~14 days or so. Leave the skin fur side down, spread out flat on the floor. You do not want creases. Feel free to check on the skin every 3-4 days to pour some more salt on.
Once it's salted, hand it in to someone who knows how to treat it. You can do it yourself, but it's a bit more hassle than I'd say it's worth.
>Trophy
NOTE: This is for what's called a European mount - A bleached skull and antlers. If you want it with fur on, call a taxidermist before you go hunting.
Flay the skull
Remove lower jaw and as much meat as possible without scraping the skull.
Now, a matter of taste: If you want to cut the skull to remove the upper teeth, leave it intact, or even cut through the eyeholes. Pic related.
Stir around in the brain from the hole in the neck to get the brain bits out
Leave to soak in cold water overnight to get out more blood
Next day, cover the antlers in aluminium foil to avoid discolouration of them.
Lower the skull in water up to the base of antlers, and bring it to a boil. Boil for 4+ hours
Pick off remaining meat, eyes and sinew(?). Dull knife, tweezers, and a sea of patience required.
Now, cover the antlers with plastic wrap, and lower the skull in hydrogen peroxide (HP) up to the base of the antlers. Depending on strength of the HP, leave it anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Too long time in the HP results in a porous skull (hard to mount).
When you take it out, look and see if there are any patches not suitably white. If you find any, dab some cotton patches in HP and fasten it to the spot with plastic wrap and leave it to work for a while.
When mounting on a plate, fucking DRILL before you screw, and use a SCREWDRIVER, not a machine.

Hunter Ed is a good start, and is required anyway in some states. Buy a book; something like "The Complete Idiots Guide to Hunting."

Does any one here bother to wear cammo only throw a bright orange vest on?
>>
>>34980435
most states require hunters ed like other anon said. It'll be boring as crap. Take it. Then start with public land.

Last year was a bust for me but I'm hopeful to bag some squirrels this year. Smaller so if I fuck it up skinning etc not a big deal. Then I'll move up to Deer.
>>
>>34981196
yes, because you are still obscuring your outline to the deer, even when wearing orange. camo is often taken to memeextremes tho
what is definitely a meme is the act of being super cautious of cleaning scent from your body/clothes. as long as you learn to hunt with the wind, you can smoke cigs and kill deer in the same moment.

scenario a: i sucessfully win doe tag for my county with low probability, and kill a big doe within first weekend of opener. season likely over, might go out 1-3 more days, more if i know there are nice bucks around.
scenario b (higher probability): does not win doe tag, will feverishly spend time bushwhacking ans following deer (hopefully snow on ground) until i get lucky enough to stumble upon a stuporous legal buck. i usually don't get a deer in these scenarios, because of many excuses.
>>private or public land
likely a mixture of both this year. public (a state forest) is always a crapshoot where i am hunting this year.

Durr for food and trophy antlers. Also probably goose.

mixed thoughts on that. I bought a Henry .357 levergat for durr, but havent had time to sight it in or practice, so i may go with a 12 or 20 gauge slug or buckshot this year.

It's worth it. We have so many deer here in Missouri they're considered a nuisance. Everyone I know from my home town has hit one or two. When you do you either butcher it (or have it butchered) or the cops will actually set it up to be given to poor people. Last one I ran over I slit its throat and the guy down the road came by to make sure I was ok. I told him he could keep the deer if he wanted, I already had two in the deep freeze. Cost me a headlight and grill though.
