has 40mm NATO threads and looks pretty modern.
Could this be the saving grace of surplus gas masks? or will the answer still be "get a 3M"

It won't make a difference if you get pepper-balled in the dick.

Viable against what?
Against particulate matter or crowd control, pretty much anything will work.
Against any serious NBC threat you're fucked anyway, a gas mask won't save you.

Asbestos filters are only bad if they have visible corrosion or are leaking dust. Asbestos isn't harmful unless it's broken up into dust and you inhale the dust particles.

Only problem with that site is that there is a conflict of interest since they sell overpriced masks and they shit on surplus ones. As long as the seals are ok and the rubber is good the mask is good. Use new 40mm filters and it waill all be good
