Questions that dont deserve there own thread i guess: Im getting conflicting information, is it okay to leave a magazine loaded? everywhere says "no you idiot, springs dont wear out under compression, but everywhere else is saying, "well they will wear out over time so dont leave em loaded you moron"

I recently bought a lightly used Mini-14. It came with a Picatinny Rail that wasn't yet attached to the rifle. I want to mount the rail, but found that the one thing the old owner either lost or forgot to include were the screws to attach it. Does anyone out there know what kind of screws they are and how to source replacements?

Hard mode: Getting in touch with the former owner and asking him where the screws are is not an option.
>>
>>34967601
Leave them loaded. On cheap mags the feed lips may be damage from constant stress but on any reputable mag you will be fine. Springs only wear out from repeated compression and decompression.

>>34967621
Probably some Charter arm el cheapos

>>34967674
Best option would be to ditch the sketch rail and purchase a new one from a reputable source. If you have any more info on the make and model of the rail then it might be possible to find just a set of screws.
I've actually got a question myself, on my Golani sporter, will a Galil AR gas block fit? Or is it to short to properly cover the holes the long Golani block has?

>>
>>34968137
you can notice a difference after like 3 years if you compare the spring length of a mag that was unloaded with one that spent the same 3 years loaded. both should still function fine since the set was taken into account during the design phase but the loaded one will be weaker.
weak doesnt mean non functional.

>>

If your keeping loaded magazines untouched for three years they must be that boat accident stock or a /k/commando geocache treasure hunt. Just throw a few extra springs/followers in a ammo can with the. and your grandkids will thank you.

Since Golani's are basically semi-auto Galils, an AR gas block of the appropriate caliber should work just fine.

Anybody try this optic? There's a vid of guys using it on a 12 gauge and it holds zero just fine. Seems like a top tier knockoff. Considering getting one while I save up for something nice.

No. I've got a shitty sightmark on my AR that came from the factory with the batteries in backwards. 4000 rounds later it holds zero and still works.
>>

Oh damn. Maybe China really is beating us. I'm gonna be using an adjustable gas block as well and will tune it down before I throw the scope on. Pretty sure it'll last a while like that.

How the fuck do you shoot a Glock? I can shoot almost anything you give me, but my groups with any Glock are 3x what they are with anything else.
>>
>>34968900
It might be because the grip angle is different. What do you usually shoot?
>>
>>34968906
Today I shot a Sig P320, Sig P226, Ruger Mark 4, S&W Victory .22, S&W M&P Shield, two different 1911s and a Glock 20.

Even with the little Shield I can do at least a palm sized group at 10 yards. With the Glock 20 it was twice that. It's the same when I shoot a Glock 19 or 22. I've made an effort to get good with Glocks and put a couple hundred rounds through them, but I just can't get on target.
>>
my 15 year old brother wants to go shooting with me so I want to get him started on a basic 22. If I purchase one for him will this still be a straw purchase since I will give him most ownership of it when not at the range. I just wanna check before we go and check out the 22s at the funstore.

I have a maadi Ak with a flash hider that is completely seized up. The muzzle device retention pin thingy has no room to extend outward as the flash hider has no clearance space to uncompress. I've basically destroyed it trying to wrench it off. PB blaster has no effect. I've also froze and then torched it. I think my only option now is to cut it off. Anybody have any ideas on how to get it off another way? If I have to cut it off what is the best way to do so without damaging the rifle? PS: it's not welded on
>>
>>34969438
They got copies, and they got them slower. They also had MUCH slower logistics and manufacturing, which is vastly more important.
>>
>>34969466
You shouldn't.

Pros:
Faster
Range
Accuracy

Cons:
Expense
Barrel life
Rarity
Smaller round (yes, this matters a little)
>>
>>34968859
>Main
No idea, but it's bolt action. Slow rate of fire will have it last a long time.

>SKS
With any semi auto, if you constantly mag dump, your barrel won't last as long due to heat. Assuming it's chrome lined, it will last thousands and thousands of rounds.

With any barrel, it will be a slow degradation in accuracy over the life span of the bore. Wear begins at the throat and muzzle and works inward. It isn't going to be a sudden change where at 4999 rounds it's fine and at 5000 rounds it keyholes and has 10 moa at 25 yards. Most barrels will last several thousands of rounds.
>>
>>34969522
Tried resting the entire muzzle in solvent for a day or so to see if it'll break up whatever is holding it?

>>34969820
Also keep in mind that the steel type, quality, rifling process, and lining/treatment or lack there of will be a big factor in barrel life.
>>
>>34969945
I soaked it in pb blaster for 18 hrs
>>
>>34969980
Then I have no idea anon. I'm hesitant to tell you to try to cut it off in the event you mess up your threads. Dumb question but are you sure it isn't pinned/welded somewhere?
>>
>>34969996
Yes, I actually took it off by hand a few years ago. It's a maadi from the 90s so I assume it should have been welded on but it ain't. I'm not versed in the history of the weapons ban or it's different rules so idk.
>>
>>34969469
If properly cleaned and maintained, yes. More than likely something else will break or need replacing before the barrel is shot out.
>>
>>34970015
Just pay the money and take it to a gunsmith. Why risk damaging a firearm?
>>
>>34970015
If you've removed it before by hand then it isn't pinned/welded. Maybe try soaking it again for a couple days this time to see if that helps. If not might be time to get the dremel

try turning it the other direction

H&K related question:
I recently picked up a used P2000sk and its in great condition but I noticed there is a gap between the top of the grip backstrap and the frame. The gap is about the same thickness as a business card.
And if I push up on the backstrap it will move up slightly.

Is this normal or not? I've looked at other P2000's in stores and several of them had this gap, though none of those guns' backstraps would move up when pushed. Also I haven't been able to find another SK model to check this on.

Anyone else got a P200Sk they can check for me?
Thanks
>>
Ok, here's the rub. I need to know if front and rear aperture sights are worth anything outside of target shooting. could they be fast and usable on an ar15? or are they too obstructing for normal offhand and field position shooting?
>>
>>34970991
yes but the actual chance of it happening is mathematically zero. assuming a normal outdoor shooting environment.
>>
Why does .45 supposedly have softer feeling recoil than 9mm? It has a higher recoil velocity than 9mm, is it the lower max PSI that reduces felt recoil?
>>
>>34971015
the issue with those is target acquisition. you can figure out if its too slow/annoying yourself. get some tape. tape over your rear sight. about 1 inch wide then poke a hole in the tape.
try looking through it.
>>
I want a sig 55X pattern rifle, I know they have been all but discontinued, but did they ever get their shit sorted out with QC? I also heard they had a bunch of issues with accuracy and other stuff. If I find one for a reasonable price, is it worth it?

Secondarily, how hard is it to build a stockless, full size UZI pistol from a parts kit (9" barrel, no stock)?
>>
>>34970999
P30SK owner here. There is no gap between the grip strap and frame on mine. If it moves around, try some electrical tape or something thin in the gap to keep it from sliding around.

How does this vaporwave "camo" look? Is it cancer? á´€ e s t H e t J c ?
>>
>>34972183
It doesn't move around on its own, only when i apply a decent amount of upward force as the mainspring acts against it.
I think your P30 is set up a little differently, when you take the backstrap off the mainspring doesnt come off with it, right?
On the P2000 the backstrap is actually what holds the mainspring in place.

But thanks for the input nonetheless.

by the way this is my first HK and I love it, 100% reliable and easy to shoot, has the LEM V2 trigger which I had always been a bit wary of because its DAO but after trying it I love it. Not like any other DAO gun I've ever shot, mine measures at about 7lbs trigger pull. I want to convert it to the lighter V1 LEM trigger pull.

>>
>>34971561
Yep lower pressure. Also helps that a .45 barrel, slide, etc. Is heavier then your typical 9mm or whatever.
>>
>>34971561
Yeah the .45 is a lower pressure cartridge but it also depends heavily on the type of gun, weight, etc.
I have a Sig P220 in.45 that feels like shooting a 9mm but a lot of polymer framed 45s seem to have more kick to me.

Optics are the one thing you don't really get to cheap out on, the best cheap red dot is hands down the TRS-25, most red dots below it just will not hold a 0 unless you're incredibly lucky. Doubly so for an airsoft red dot, they aren't made to withstand recoil.

Can anyone recommend a *good* 3'oclock 1911 IWB? I used one of these kinda semi crappy (as in; I started carrying unchambered because this thing had a tendency to toggle the safety, also while sitting on particularly 'deep' sofas, it could pop out of the holster entirely) but VERY comfortable (as in; extremely easy transition from sitting to standing to driving etc... I have both forgotten that I was carrying a gun, and also not noticed that I didn't re-holster my gun in the morning before leaving the house until much later that day when I was already at work)

Unfortunately, this lil thing's belt clip has gotten worn out. And you know what? That's not a criticism of the product's quality or durability. I used this thing on a daily basis for years, and for a 20$ soft holster, it has served me VERY well.

I could definitely go buy another one; but I was kind of wondering if there were any 'better' options? Despite all I liked about it, there were two major issues I had; 1. It randomly toggling safety through the course of standard daily movement. and 2. no retention strap; this is not a problem 99% of the time, but I've had it pop out of the holster when sitting in particularly reclined car seats, and very soft/deep sofas that you sink into, not to mention one time I sat down too fast at work and the bottom of the barrel hit the armrest on my office chair and the whole thing popped out of the holster; these events are few and far between, but they fuckin happened, and If I could get something that would prevent them from happening again; that'd be nice).

tldr; recommend good 1911 IWBs for for someone who likes to carry 3'oclock

inb4 >carrying a fullsize. I DO have smaller guns, if I'm going out in gym shorts or trackpaints or some shit I'll just slip a p238 in my pocket. The 1911 is still my primary 'proper pants and belt' carry gun which will be on my hip on the average weekday.

The problem is your problems are probably the same as the source of your comfort here.

Your squishy ass holster is comfy but has shit retention and no structural integrity of it's own. Most kydex/leather holsters have some inherent retention due to the way they are formed even if they lack a retention strap/lock. This combined with being less flexible means that instead of just your gun impacting the corner of the chair it'd be your relatively rigid holster. With these kinds of holsters a gun is extremely unlikely to pop out without some serious shenanigans going down. A car wreck or being hung upside down might do it though(may require shaking). If you still want a retention strap that MAY be a thing but most people consider them to be unnecessary for ccw so pickings may be slim.

I shill sometimes for garret industries. Had a couple silent thunders for a while and they were pretty nice. Don't scratch a gun like kydex either which is nice. IMHO kinda over priced though.

What's a decent price for an M1 carbine? LGS has one for $700 which is cheaper than anywhere else around me.

Quality of glass (less important on a red dot. Very important on any kind of magnified optic) and durability. If you're just plinking a TRS-25 would be fine. I would spend a little more and get a Vortex/ Primary Arms/ Burris product if I ever thought I might trust my life to it.
>>

>>34976482

>>
>>34976574

>>
>>34973167
If you buy a cheapo red dot as an example, firstly the MOA will almost certainly not be as tight. Nor will the battery life be nearly as long. But of even more importance will be the durability of the the optic. An optic designed for air soft will hold up poorly to the recoil of a real gun. It might work ok on a .22lr, but anything bigger is going to rattle wiring apart, jiggle the emitter, and almost certainly push the squishy adjustments out of zero.

There is certainly a point where you can start cutting costs based on desired use. An Aimpoint for example has turbo extra durability for harsh combat use which might not be something you need. Also it has NV compatibility which bumps up the price. For range use a mid-price red dot will be almost the same experience. But a $10 POS Chinese Walmart red dot is just right out of consideration.

Magnified optics are a whole other game because the precise clicks of adjustment, glass clarity, embedded illumination elements, and other things all some into consideration.

In my experience having arm strength does make rapid semi auto with good accuracy a bit easier.

I'd say though that cardio and climate acclimatization are truly big. It's kind of a shock how many out of shape people show up to outdoors competitions in my area and they end up getting exhausted just by waiting around in the sun. I think that definitely affects performance. Also some of the really out of shape people move agonizingly slow on tactical lanes (especially up and down ladders) which adds many needless seconds to their times.

P99 is a vastly underrated gun.

9mm P99's are 100% made in Germany. With the older ones in .40, I think the frames were made in Germany, and the slides were made by S&W in the US. Not sure how production is now.

Look for German Proofmarks. If it has an Eagle or Antler, or a CIP/N on the slide, barrel, and frame, and they all have matching serials, that shit is German made.

A/S trigger is a little funky, but it's pretty light, and pretty fast.

Do it.
>>
>>34980254
Rim lock doesn't exist, if the interrupter is working properly then it should chamber. Why would make a gun where it would be used in combat but the soldier has to meticulously focus on how he loads each round, that would be the worst combat flaw of all time.

Do not do that to any rifle above 1K dollars or the cube will be slightly annoyed.

Also your pattern is terrible and the colour pallet needs work, more cyan and yellow will even it out, especially in gradients.

As far as the pattern goes, I'd recommend doing a white base coat, getting a bunch of string, making a skewed grid, then applying your gradient.

It'd also really help to place a single Palm tree somewhere in a different gradient, like purple to red while everywhere else is cyan to yellow to pink.

Most stores have policies against any returns of transferred firearms, which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the store policy of the place I visited. I don't know if I am not looking hard enough or they actually allow this or made an exception.
>>
>>34985125
They make Normal and Super Colibri,
The normal are for handguns as they barely make it out a rifle barrel with any velocity along with a chance of a squib.
The Super Colibri are extremely quiet especially out of a full length rifle, they will not cycle a semi and the bullet drop is very drastic but is great for quiet back yard shooting.
You might look at low velocity CB shorts, they are a tad more powerful, and relatively quiet. Depending on how much noise you can make.
>>
>>34985368
Will cb shorts work in a rifle for LR only though? I'll look at getting super colibri then. I'm mostly just trying to shoot a .22 in the back yard at a 3/4" piece of plywood with targets in front of it.

Short of Back carry without a holster or carrying a gun pointed at your crotch without a holster. Basically carrying like a beaner banger.

>>34988015
If I recall finger grooves and some ergos, both should perform similarly. Go to a Fun Store and fingerbang both gens and see which one works for you.

Get a dedicated plinker. It'd be cheaper than most conversion kits and more gun = more fun.

Which ever one feels more comfortable to shoot and can fit your body. That one is entire up to choice.

Generally, yes. If you do competition shooting or wish to have more instinctive pistol aiming, the red dots are worth it. If you're just going to be putting holes on paper just to put holes on paper, they're not worth the INITIAL investment.

I'm building pic related and I'm planning on building it with a 10" barrel. From what I understand, if my gun is over 26 inches long in its entirety, it isn't considered an sbr if it has a barrel shorter than 16 inches. Am I correct? I've had varying answers from people that don't really know what they're talking about and I'd like to get /k/'s opinion. I'm building an extension into the receiver near the stock end to get it to 26.5 inches in total so I don't have a giant unshrouded section of barrel.

As is typical when this kind of thing happens the true answer is a little bit of both.

keeping a spring compressed will result in a decrease in it's strength over time. this is true. The rate at which the springs strength decreases goes down rather rapidly though.

Keeping a mag loaded for a decade would be a poor choice, but a year or two will probably be fine unless the springs were shitty to begin with. In reality if you use your guns with any frequency then the springs will likely need to be replaced eventually anyways and this kind of compression wear will be too small to have a noticeable effect.

Guys, I'm looking for a new holster for my hammer (Glock 17 Gen 4), to be used with a 1.75" duty belt.

I've seen some of what Mr. GarandThumb has been using and like how low it rides on his thigh. Are there any well known alternatives other than Safariland that would work equally well?

While I'm at it - how about belt mounted pistol and rifle magazine pouches?

Finally - any idea about those tiny IFAK-kits that are also belt mounted? Somewhat low profile?

Any answer would be much appreciated.

Currently I'm doing an assignment for Materials Science, and I'm supposed to describe and explain the materials of various items and I was given the topic of military body armor.

Basically, how common is it for soldiers to use plate carriers? The wikipedia says that combat soldiers use plated armor, but it's incredibly sparse with information about that outside of the introduction so I'm not sure how accurate that statement is.

Be of use to those around you, and you'll be an asset even if you're not in the military.

Can someone give me a complete rundown on how to sell a firearm online? I've bought them online, but never sold. I'm going to be putting a few pistols up on Gunbroker at a great price, so they should sell decently fast. What is the safest way to get paid? Is paypal a good idea? And one last thing. How do I go about shipping it? Go to a carrier like Usps and tell them I am going to be shipping a firearm to an ffl? And finally, do I pay for the shipping or does the customer? How much does it usually cost to ship a pistol through usps/Fex ex?

For shooting you could take some basic pistol or carbine class. There are many great instructors out there, but for the basics most of them will get you sorted out. Do a Google search and find a class near you and attend that.

like any good buyer you want a lowball maybe start at 450, if you start too low he may be offended, then if he drops down a little say you do like the rifle but that is too steep and offer him $500, remind him that he said he wants it off his wall, now at this point if he hasn't already met your agreement say your final offer of $550, take a while to get to this price, mull it over and ask for some minor compensation to grease the wheels like a few boxes of ammo or a free transfer in the future.

Of course this shouldn't be static, change it to better suit your situation however that goes down

Oathkeepers if you are current/former mil/leo/ems/fire&rescue
3%ers if you're big on militias
Proud Boys if you're into constitutionalism or nationalism and you are into a fraternal aspect (mostly conservatives, civic nationalists, and libertarians that get together and drink and hang out)

The Proud Boys were started by Gavin McInnes (co-founder of VICE) and is probably the most friendly and easy going of the groups. Officially, I am not a Proud Boy, but you can pretty easily find the chapters through facebook and send a message to the chapter head. Just search for "*your state* Proud Boys".

That's a reasonable complaint. It would be nice for a community force that held less-than-left-wing ideals to have the currency to go out and make a positive difference. There's a lot to hate out there, but you can: A, people in need, and B, show everyone that the right-of-left aren't nazis. If your people aren't threatening, but still still casually carried side arms (not pretentiously open-carrying AR-15's and airsoft shit) you would get little resistance, and the resistance you did get would have to look pretty bad to get shot if you trained your people well enough.

Sharpening of checkering is done with regular triangular needle files with angles that match the checkering file used to lay out the pattern, usually 60 degrees, but you need sharp lines to begin with. I think you'll find it very difficult to trace those laser checkered lines with a needle file, and will also find it difficult to find a checkering file with a line spacing that matches what you have there. It looks extremely coarse, perhaps 10-15 LPI. Because of the softness of the shapes, I wouldn't know how to get an accurate measurement of the LPI for you to begin with.
>>
>>34997219
Okay, thank you. Do you think I would be better off just grinding off the cast checkering and checkering the metal underneath it? I know that it's thick enough that I could do that.
>>
>>34995398
That's the color of worn anodizing.

>>34997226
No, imo you'd be removing too much material. Checkering is a subtractive process, and material has already been removed from the casting to leave the rounded bumpies that are already on there. If you flattened it and checkered again, the checkering would be below the edge of the grips on each side and the grips would dig into your hand. Or it might be weakened.

imo grip tape or Talon applique. I know it's not what you want to hear :(
