I'm new to the AR world, and I would like to build my first one. I'm not looking for some high speed $1,500 build, I want something around $600 that functions well when I need it. I've been looking at various uppers, and I found this one from Palmetto State Armory http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-m4-nitride-1-7-moe-blk-freedom-upper-with-bcg-ch-508045.html
Anyone have any experience with this assembly?

the freedom uppers are the 'budget" line from psa. People will tell you to get the cold hammer forged ones with that have an FN barrel. But if the freedom is all you can afford i hear they do work fine.

you can get a bear creek ar from classic for closer to $400 but you will still need to buy a front sight of your choice

Just build one, its way better in the long run, and you get better parts for cheaper.
> Ballistic Advantage or Faxon for barrels (Under $200 for normal barrels)
> Toolcraft BCG (~$80)
> Blem Aero Upper ($60)
> Arround $200 for a decent rail (Wait for sales)
Buy a rail you like or the best you can afford. Get a set of BUIS until you can afford an Aimpoint or something.
Go cheap on the lower, the upper is where you want good parts.

I have close to 4k rounds of exclusively wolf and tula steel case through that exact upper.

>> Ballistic Advantage or Faxon for barrels (Under $200 for normal barrels)
I just got a standard old goverment profile BA 16in barrel for $85
Waiting for sales you can do great
>>34967457
anything thats not chf is psa budget line
>>34967564
This as well. Assuming you're in no rush to build, wait for sales. On Black Friday, gun companies practically give stuff away.
>>34967574
I received my barrel like 2 days ago, but the sale is still going on

I though PTAC was the budget line.
>>34967597
PTAC are novelty uppers
>>34967333
My Del-Ton upper and Anderson lower combo has treated me very well.
>>34967607
lewd
>>34967524
What bullet weights do you find work best in it?
>>34967597
ptac is "technically" not psa even though everyone knows its psa dirt cheap.
freedom = psa brand budget line
premium = normal bog standard chromelined upper from anyone else
chf = actual good item
>>34967647
PTAC and Freedom are very similar in price and in options
PTAC has a disclaimer that there are flaws and dings
My guess is that they just cobble together their blemished parts and call it PTAC.
They have always sold a ton of blems, so its not like they dont have them laying around
>>34967333
psa is shit tier, get BCM or LMT
>>34967666
>They have always sold a ton of blems, so its not like they dont have them laying around
i could never understand this. is the qc so bad, and the vendor so bad, that they get huge amounts of 2nd quality product? ive never seen another advertised product with such a FUCK HUGE cosmetic reject rate
i wonder who could be behind this
>>34967642
I honestly use 55 grain mostly. It's sighted in with m855 though and maintains 2.5 MOA at 100 yds with it.
>>34967333
If you are going to buy an upper without a chrome lined barrel, dont buy stainless steel, go for the Nitride coated barrels.
properly nitrided 4150 > 416r in terms of barrel life.
>>34967597
no thats their shit line
>>34967666
ptac was their attempt at a budget line but its initial reputation was so shitty. they had to invent psa freedom. it probably is the parts that failed the bare minimum standards needed for "freedom"
>>34967689
they have very low standards and accept everything
>>34967627
Lol, how so?
>>34967711
What about stainless with nitride coatings?
>>34967766
Faxon, which nitrides both their 4150 and 416r barrels say the 4150 will last longer
Do note that the PSA barrels, the stainless arent nitrided
Look at the PTAC vs Freedom uppers here
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-carbine-length-5-56-nato-1-7-m4-melonite-freedom-upper-no-bcg-or-ch.html
http://palmettostatearmory.com/ptac-16-m4-5-56-nato-1-7-nitride-upper-without-bcg-or-ch-39236.html
Melonite IS nitride so even the coatings are the same
also kekked at the "Upper is expected to group within the mil-spec."
Im convinced they just use blem parts
>>34967333
PSA uppers are good to go...just invest in the CHF barrels.
>A proprietary blend of Hammer forged chrome molly vanadium made by FN that is referred to as "Machine Gun Steel" by virtue of its required use in FN's M249 and M240 weapons. The hammer forging process work hardens the steel, making it more durable. In addition, the chrome process for the bore allows for a lining almost twice as thick as a standard M16 for enhanced durability
I have a CHF barrel in my dissipator and love the bastard to death.

Am I autistic for only wanting barrels with pinned gas blocks? I feel like buying a barrel and just sliding on a clamp/set screw block can't ever be truly secure.
Sucks that very few companies actually put out barrels with pinned blocks or FSBs anymore
>>34968895
It isn't in demand right now. Free floating barrels, tube handguards, and low profile gas blocks are what is in.
>>34967333
Instead of PSA, with their occasionally dubious quality and not so great customer service, consider this option:

Comes in under your budget, too.
