I've given some thought to joining the military, particularly the Army so I can be in a tank or AFV of some sort. But, I'm 6'1 and have heard that you have to be a certain height to even qualify to be crew member in a tank. Is this true?

Also, if any tanker anons are here, feel free to share stories or give advice and whatnot.

My dad was says it sucked and they even had a dedicated piss bucket and what they called "Tank snacks" which was chips and chocolate chip cookies and fun dip powder crunched to a pulp. They would then pass around the bag and suck it up like a vacuum.

In the army they do have a height limit but they don't really follow it/enforce it.

We have people in my company right now that are 6'2", I don't know if it was just ignored at MEPS or something like that but you should be fine. Talk to a recuiter, you should get a sizable bonus.

If you do come in prepare to go to a Rotation to either Korea, Kuwait, Germany and Eastern Europe. No real deployments but you'll get promoted quick if you aren't a cunt and slightly slower if you are.

Old fag 19D here. Crewed M113, M1 (105mm), LAV-25, M551A1, M60E3, M2 and M3 Bradley, got limited hands on with the AGS. Here is what I can tell you about tanks. Tanks are cool, fucking awesome actually. Tanks are incredibly bad ass in combat and extra comfy in the field. However, most of the time you will be in garrison or training and for the 2 times a year you might get to fire that gun, you will liver your life as a slave to the machine. Tanks required impossible amounts of maintenance. Everything is hard, hot, and heavy.

Dumbest question in the history of /k/: Why aren't those parts overengineered to hell and back? We have aftermarket components for guns and cars -- why not do limited runs of stuff for armored vehicles?
>>

>>
>>34966913

>>
0313fag here. There were many 6+ft guys around. I did enjoy my time as a crewman. There's tons of maintenance, but I'd much rather change a tire than change a track.
>>
>>34975392
Mechanical parts on a tank have complicated interactions and different levels of stress depending on operational factors like weather. There's revision and correction of problems all the time, but there's always a weakest link in a chain no matter how many times you redesign the chain.

>Why not..

Because making one part twice the weight it should be just means another part is going to be the one that breaks under stress now, and making every fucking part twice the weight of what it should be isn't an option.
>>
>>34975392
Because in the US we sell about 17 million cars every year, but the global supply of M1 tanks is about 10,000 and it has been in production since 1979. Economy of scale. And tanks are already overbuilt. They are literally built like a tank. There are enormous forces at work in terms of torque, weight and friction. They can only build it so strong before the weight of better components hits the point of diminishing returns.
>>
Why do marines have tanks?

former 11th acr here. I heard about that. Fuckng sucks. Never join the national guard. War is not a part time job.

Worst that happened when i was at NTC was some infantry pukes were playing tanker on their Bradley. TC left to go to the cp and his gunner did not check to see if he was clear of the vehicle before rolling out. TC had slipped and got his ankle caught in the straps their gear was hanging on outside the turret. His head was level with the top of the tracks.

If you're actually 145lbs at 6'1 then you're too skinny. Eat some cheeseburgers and lift weights. I was 5'11 165 and i was on the slim side of the guys. Lots of heavy equipment and each round weighs 55lbs and are manually loaded. Build your core strength. Cardio is important too cause you'll be sleepless for days at a time during missions.

You're dead pretty quick though. I mean, sure you could catch fire or some shit, but modern AT weapons are so powerful (in terms of what could reliably kill an M1) that it'd probably kill you pretty fucking quick. I mean, if you're an infantryman you can get shot and bleed out, or get stomp'd by artillary. Airmen have such limited means to fight back, and if you're hit then even if you survive, odds are you're about to fall into a bunch of very pissed off baddies. In the navy you'll probably just drown or die of exposure, maybe get eaten by a shark or something. Frankly I can't imagine a worse way to die than being trapped in or against a sinking ship. All those scenes from Dunkirk of ships capsizing onto people in the water; fuckin spooky, man.

Point being, it's all pretty subjective. As long as I know my commander won't be sending my into some Battle of Grozny level bullshit, I'd be fine with being a tanker.
>>
>>34975944
the chances of dying inside a tank are way smaller than dying as infantry
>>
>>34975392
To add on to what both those Anons said, over engineering systems just makes it more complicated for grunts and maintenance to deal with. With such a limited demand, there's not such a market for aftermarket options, along with the fact that the military doesn't give two shits what the grunts/tankers/users say, even if it meant giving an edge to our troops.
>>
>>34975392
Engineer who actually designs armoured vehicles here.

They are over-engineered, and are far tougher than an average car. The difference is what they're designed to do. Soldiers break shit, it's what they do.
Look at any example of a military vehicle that you can also buy as a civilian like land cruisers and G-wagons. If you just drive it to the shops the service intervals are normal, but if you're flying through rough terrain at 50km/hr then you'll need to repair it more often.

But the reason there's no aftermarket is because the companies that make them offer huge amounts of service and support.
It's all custom shit for the big military contracts, so you can get anything put onto them that you want. It's not like going to the dealer and picking one off the showroom floor, you tell them what you want them to make.

You don't get a choice initially, but when your reenlistment window is open there are PCS options. The only way to go to Korea now is through a unit rotation (they killed the permanent unit there). Mostly same with Germany, but they're opening up an 11 ACR-style OPFOR unit in... Hoensfeld?

Tracks turn by putting more power to one side than the other so you need to put more throttle in when you turn or else it slows considerably. The pivot point is also in the center of the track rather than the back. The gear changes also kick like a bitch, and the track gets loud as shit when you get above 20mph

It's kind of hard to describe, you just need to drive it yourself.

I don't think it's fully down to the risk, but more expense. Amphibious equipment is complicated and expensive all just so it can go from water to land and back. Helicopters can go fuckin anywhere. So if you can only afford one, the choice is pretty obvious. That's why we really only see nations with huge defense budgets developing serious amphibious capabilities (US, China, Soviet Union)

Sure, there’s that but I doubt even the U.S. would attempt an Iwo Jima (or even Inchon) type amphibious assault anymore, as the ships and landing craft are just to susceptible to modern weapons.

For Desert Storm, the Marines staged rehearsals for a potential amphibious assault into Kuwait but that was just to sucker Saddam into concentrating his forces to oppose it.

I think they're still good for a show of force. The image of troops rolling ashore is pretty set in American culture as a sign of "We're here to fuck shit up". I agree that we wouldn't be doing it under serious fire, at least not from any modern nations. Of course if we needed to roll up on some West African shithole to cockslap some dictator it could be fun, but yeah we're not landing on any Chinese or Russian or North Korean beaches anytime soon.

At this point the real combat use of vehicles like the AAV-7 is more a utility role; getting supplies ashore after the heliborne troops are already on the ground. Send in the choppers to take out the serious threats, then let your fleet role up to expand the beachhead. In theory, the former could be done without clearing the beach entirely, so if you really wanted a show you could have the heli troops totally cut off the defenders on the beach, neuter their anti-shipping capability, then send the amtracs in to clear out the defenders. It'd be shooting fish in a barrel at that point, but that's probably as close as we'd get to a seriously opposed beach landing.
>>
>>34987098

6'1" is the official cutoff. M1s are pretty roomy so you won't have issues. It's pretty much the driver's hole where height is an issue and even then you'd be fine.

One of our 2nd LTs was 6'6" or 6'7" and they let him be a tank commander. I guess the rules are different for officers.
>>
>>34970676
>I'd imagine Tankers suffer the worst deaths of all military personel.
People are shooting big guns/bombs at you. But I'd rather be in a Tank than almost anything except the really good mine protected vehicles. Tank drivers are susceptible to IEDs because of flat bottom thin armor.

>all the tankers i know are generally fat fucks

It is, though. The SEPv3 maybe, but our SEPv2's are using computers from the 90s, same thermals, and no APS (which the v3 doesnt have either). The v3 is supposed to have more modular parts for eadier repair or some shit, and FLIR thermals.

Granted, the Abrams could easily be upgraded beyond T14 capabilities, it's just a choice by the DOD not to because we havent fought anyone comparable in tank warfare since Korea
>>
what was tank school like? do they teach you how to take over all roles in the tank (gunner, loader, etc)?
>>
>>34991279
Yes. You will learn how to dive and load because that will be your primary job. You will go to the range and learn how to gun just so you know how to whole system works. Once you get to your unit you will need a couple of gunnerys to understand how to really run the tank (TC). At OSUT you will also qualify on the M9 pistol and M4 carbine.

The P7 still works well as a troops transport on the ground, the tracks help it maneuver over difficult terrain and, if it needs to, can cross bodies of water. On top of that it's got a .50 cal and 40mm in the turret, it still has use for the Marine Corps, especially for its original expeditionary mission

Does tanking tech any skills or have any uses that can be useful after your 4 years or whatever? I imagine mechanic would be one of them

>counting gun overhang as if the entire area occupied is a cube
also, the abrams height seems a tad small unless you're not counting the .50 cal, which you should be since you're counting the main gun overhang

That's all there is for now. I'd do an M103 short, but I think it'd be pretty close to my FV4005 and T30 stories. still, enjoy and check back for more!

Just the technical aspect is probably pretty valuable. I can imagine if you can fix a tank in the field you can fix a lot of things. There's probably also some team dynamic bullshit you can throw in; it's definitely one of the more group-oriented combat roles by nature. You can't operate a tank solo. You're also working with some pretty high-end hardware and software.

It's like anything you can put on a resume; just stretch the truth and use flowery wording and your four years as a tanker can be as good as eight years at Harvard.

If i want to become a tanker for 4 years, is there anything I should know or keep in mind?

One time I almost died inside a track that caught fire at 29 palms. I like trackers, good people, really salty.

Did you get to practice amphibious landings?

Also, what kind of hentai senpai

1- try not to jump off of tanks(nearly impossible though) because you risk serious knee injuries.
2- You will be working on your tank, taking inventory of all the gear associated with your tank more than ever driving the damn things. A Tank WILL break JUST from sitting in the motorpool.
3- A Good driver is hard to come by an is more valuable than any other crew member.
4- learn to love diesel fumes and and long bouts of teeth chattering vibrations coupled with headpounding noise.
5- learn to love lifting heavy weight and being covered in grease.
6- get in touch with your masochistic self early, for you will be screamed at endlessly by your TC.
ex. DRIVER WAKE UP! DRIVER DON'T HIT THAT...aww shit!
>>
>>34994972
You'll work on the outside of the tank more than the inside.

is there any preferred position that is better than the other? I understand it can rely heavily on just what you like, but still

Guys, is operating a tank as fun as Girls Und Panzer makes it out to be?
>>
>>35001109
I can't say for sure, but I'd have to imagine being a anything is better than being a loader. Other than that yeah they all have their ups and downs. I'd rather be a gunner than a driver, some people might prefer it the other way around. They're all unique enough to warrant looking into.

Is being a cop as fun as Ghost in the Shell makes it out to be?

The one tanker I talked to did everything at one point and eventually got stuck in as a commander. What he told me was if you're not a fucking moron, you will end up gunning or commanding the tank permanently.

You spend most of your time doing maintenance anyway.
>>
>>35001109
Back in my day, everyone started out as a loader then moved up to driver. I think all our gunners were sergeants. I don't remember if that was a requirement.

It's the Army, you'll do whatever they tell you to do. Just an FYI.
>>
Can you enlist and go right into tanking, or do you have to be an officer or some shit?
>>
Valkyria chronicles inspired me to be a tanker
is this a good idea? what are the requirements to be a tanker?

how likely am i to die?

I was death incarnate playing Battlezone, I'd throw down as a tanker.

Pretty much all cannons have some sort of recocking mechanism. If that doesn't work then you have to pull the round out of the breech. On manually loaded guns and probably most newer autoloading guns it's fairly simple, although early autoloaders could make it a pain in the ass. You're very unlikely to mission kill a tank with a dud round.

Can someone explain to me how aiming the main gun actually works?
Do you have to compensate for lead and drop, or does the computer do it all for you?
Do you just use a little joystick or something to traverse the turret?
Is it hard?
>>
>>35006014
Soldiers were black on water and food. People were left behind, had to drive 8-10 hours after being up 72 hours, tanks breaking down left and right (more than usual). I'm not sure which one of the MST Sergeants has it, but there's a picture of an Abrams towing 2 others behind it.
