Ak for basically the reasons already stated, since it's simplier it's also much easier to mass produce. Since the STG-44 really doesn't offer anything over the AK47 by any real margin, it's pointless to choose one over the other.

If you had to own just one, the AK again because of how common parts are and ammo are for the rifle.

What is the question? Which do we prefer? Which would we rather carry? I mean, of course, I'd love to own an STG-44 from a collecting stand point. But if my intent is to actually use it, the AK is the only choice.

STG 44 stampings were shit, which is why early stamped AK's were so shit that they've reverted to milling. 2000 rounds and your brand new original STG had cracked receiver - which wasn't a problem for Germans, they were loosing those rifles before that happened and even if it did happen they just replaced it, but for Soviets adopting peacetime rifle? Nope.

Other than - AK should be more accurate mechanically because of tilting bolt in STG and as long as we're talking 7.62x39 it's simply better cartridge(5.45 is obviously entirely new generation of intermediate caliber cartridges).
