It's that time again! Getting an early start to give new shooters time to get to the range
Let's get out to the range and actually use our guns.

Thread premise
>Drill threads will be posted regularly for one month, in this case until the end of September
>Post your targets ITT and we will talk about shooting tips, stance, etc...
>At the end of the month we will organize the targets by score and you can compete for bragging rights

Last time we did this was all good natured fun and it motivated a hand full to get out and shoot, let's do it again!

This month will be a repeat of the first DOTM, the FBI bullseye qualifications test

>Rules in OP
>Target is a B-8 25yd pistol target
>Pic related is a printer friendly target if you can't get a B-8
>Holes cutting a scoring ring receive the higher score
>It is encouraged you shoot your carry gun, however, we saw some goofy shit last time

Example of a target, this would be a 283/300

Easiest way to score is subtraction, 10 is a zero subtraction from score, 9 is -1, 8 is -2, etc...
200 is passing, 260 is 'instructor'

Cool thread OP, but most people on /k/ dont own guns and maybe 10% of the ones that do actually shoot them. Sorry

I'm getting that impression.

That's why I've decided to be just a general collector without a specific theme. The only requirement is having enough money to buy the cool toys you like and you get to act superior to others without actually putting training or effort into it. Arguing about taste is fun (also pointless and unproductive).

Bump
>>
Bumping for interest.

Also, new to this type of thread. Is this limited to just pistols?
>>
>>34972553
Not necessarily, although the OP drill is specifically for pistols. I tried running a "rifle DOTM" but got basically zero participation.

Again, only about 10% of /k/ shoots with any regularity and only about 10% of them are even remotely passable.

If you want I can throw up my old rifle DOTM macro.

I'm a member of this new range in PA. they take you out in front of the firing line and do shoot & move drills, shooting from cover, weapon transitions, rapid fire, etc. I got to do it for the first time tonight. It was a humbling fucking experience. trying to hit a target with any semblance of accuracy while on the move is extremely tough.

Because it's a subcompact pocket auto with mediocre sights and I have big hands so even when trying to concentrate I was pushing it since I'm forced to have like half my damn finger through the trigger guard.

I do fine and can have it oriented whichever way I feel like with full-size pistols due to beefier grips and better sights.

>I was shooting with my non dominant hand and my non dominant eye
GOOD! Keep doing that!

Here, try this
>Set target at chosen distance, you should bring it back to 15yds to start if your range will allow

>Make ready with an EMPTY gun, no ammo in magazine or chamber

>Set the gun down, it's only a distraction right now

>Square up with the target, shoulders slightly in front of hips, feet pointed forward, no angle to your body
If you could draw a line from your left hip to the target, and your right hip to the target they would be exactly the same length

>At this point I like to kick big rocks and uncomfortable crap out from under my boots so I'm standing nice and flat

>From this point on you don't take any steps out of position

>Take a breath, relax, pick up pistol, check that it is empty, point it at the ground, close your eyes.

>With your eyes closed get a good solid thumbs forward grip on the pistol, make sure it's deep in your palm

>With your eyes closed lift the pistol until you are comfortable and feel like it is centered in a good even stance

>Once you feel comfortable, don't feel any tension in your core or shoulders, and think you're straight on open your eyes

>You will probably be aiming left or right of the target

>Lower the pistol, shift ONE foot forward or back, it takes less than an inch of movement most of the time so don't over do it.
If you move your right foot forward, you will aim further to the left, left foot forward further to the right, reverse is also true, right back aims right, left back aims left

>Once you have made a tiny correction close your eyes, get comfortable, no tension, lift pistol, breathe, open eyes

>Repeat as needed until you are on target (being a little high or low is okay)

>You now have your natural point of aim DO NOT MOVE YOUR FEET for the rest of the shooting session with this target

>Ensure pistol is empty and hammer is back, lift pistol to eye level, do not lower your head to find the sights, lift the sights to your eye

>Focus on the front sight, see some detail, now ensure that the top of the front sight and the top of the rear sight are perfectly level, place the tip of the front sight in the middle of the bullseye
(You may need to switch focus between the front sight, rear sight, and target to do this, that is okay)

>Once everything is aligned switch focus exclusively to the front sight

>While focusing on the front sight, place your finger on the trigger, use your peripheral vision to ensure target and rear sight are still in the proper location, ensure top of sights are even and level, ensure front sight is centered in rear notch

>Begin dry fire, focus on front sight, slowly press trigger to the rear like a button, ignore the trigger pull and focus instead on the front sight, is it moving? Then make it stop, a steady front sight is your only goal as you press the trigger
(Note: some involuntary muscle tremors are going to happen, do not over correct, treat it like steering a car going 70)

>Keep focus on front sight, keep it steady, keep pressing trigger, continue until you dry fire and the hamner falls, now KEEP PRESSING, you should hold the trigger to the rear for a second, do not move. Keep focus on the front sight, did it move? If it did, why?

>Take a breath, slowly let trigger forward only after you exhale

>If your sights moved figure out why and fix yourself

>Cock hammer, aim at target, do it again

>Do this a minimum of five times, make sure your front sight is rock solid steady

>You are now ready to shoot, without moving your feet load five rounds into the pistol
>>
>>34995186
>>34994717
>Return to position, gun loaded, safety on, eyes closed. Take a breath.

>Lift pistol, open eyes, align sights, focus on front sight, disengage safety, focus on front sight, press trigger, don't move your sights

>*BANG*

>Hold trigger to the rear, let recoil do its thing, return focus to front sight, breathe.

>Slowly let trigger out to reset, once you feel the click stop

>Focus on front sight

>Begin trigger press

Do that for all five rounds. When gun is empty repeat dry fire cycle a minimum of five times before reloading, remember to breathe.

If you are getting a good group but it's high/low left/right it's your sights, don't try to aim off target to hit the bullseye, you will get a worse group, just shoot at the bullseye and fix your sights later

Thank you for the valuable tips! I'll be sure to try everything out the next time I go to the range which will probably be sometime this weekend. I'm hoping for Friday because Sunday's are just too busy for me. I need to buy a couple more boxes of 9mm, I like to buy two 50 round boxes a week just to practice with. I keep my self defense rounds at home and I usually keep my Glock in a drawer beside my bed in case anyone tries to break in on me since I'm living on my own. I also keep a .410 loaded with self defense rounds by my side as well.
>>
>>34995308
Good stuff man, keep it up!

I strongly advise getting a cheap full size 9mm for marksmanship practice if you can afford it. It will help a LOT to shoot something with a full grip, sight radius, and some weight to it.
If you can't afford anything else tgese use CZ75 mags and are pretty reliable/accurate. Good for range practice.

>>
>>34995475
I'm not 21, but I'm hoping to eventially have enough to hunt down a full size that I like. The subcompact I have is just too small for me. I'm 6'4" and it's tiny in my hands. I think that's another part of my issue. I'm hoping to get my hands on a WW2 1911 if my uncles friend can manage to get it. If he gets it, he's letting me have it for what he puts into it. If I can't get a 1911, I may just have him buy me a police trade in Glock in 9mm and have him use his veterans discount.
>>
>>34995489
He'd probably die of lead poisoning with my luck lol
>>
>>34995607
I own two 1911s and stringly recommend getting one, but if you have to get the Glock that's fine too. You'll be able to shoot it more due to 9mm being 2/3 the cost of .45

>>34994717

I'm not sure that it's because I'm flinching, but more because the grips are too small for my hands and it's causing me to have a lack of control on the handgun when it recoils in my hands. I'm hoping this pic helps illustrate my issue. I don't have enough room to put both hands on the grip and be out of the way of the slide and everything where it's so small and so I'm not able to choke up on it and keep it steady if that makes sense?
>>
>>34995680
I love the way 1911's look, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able be to afford it so it seems the police trade in Glocks are the way to go for me. And I'm a little more familiar with Glocks so I think I'll have an easier time with another Glock than having to train on two separate weapons if that makes sense?
>>
>>34996763
You mean recoil is moving the gun and causing it to hit different spots on the target?
That's not how it works, the bullet is already half way to the target by the time the gun starts moving.

You're
>Not looking at your front sight and making sure the alignment is correct
>Flinching

Get snap caps, randomly load tgem in mags at least two rounds down, you'll see the flinch.

(Not bashing you btw, just trying to clarify what's going on so you can fix it and be awesome)
>>
>>34996861
I'll try and hunt some down! Thanks for the advice! So just randomly load snap caps to help get rid of the flinch? Any other tips?
>>
>>34996925
Well, the random stap caps is to help catch yourself flinching, but it also helps fight it.

The only way to get rid of a flinch (and it's a constant battle btw, everyone flinches, even olympic shooters) is to dry fire.

Your brain insulates synaptic pathways as the same neurons are fired in the same order over and over, this makes the process more consistent and faster. It's why bruce lee could throw a perfect punch without thinking, or what a pro baseball pitcher might call muscle memory.
Now if your trigger pull is folliwed by an explision abd shit slamming into your hand, the muscle contraction to counter it becomes part of that path, bad enough and you'll even flinch while dry firing.
If you dry fire 3x more than you actually shoot the path ends at trigger break, and you will have an easier time fighting the flinch (but that shit still happens so be aware and use snap caps to find it)

Balence a coin or empty casing on your front sight and dry fire at a target in a safe direction for maximum kung-fu
>>
>>34996773
The Glock will serve you well, and the ammo is cheap. Don't feel bad if you end up with one instead of a 1911, just shoot it and get better.

Mine's a "varminter" class, IE under 11lbs with optic and no more than 9x optic.

Savage makes some nice rifles tho.

You shooting off bags or a bipod? Rear bag or no?

Sounds like you're either not squared up behind the rifle or your bipod's jumping around because you aren't loading it/loading it wrong.

Bipod, rear bag, the bipod isn't hopping as much as it would have to to be the culprit. I mark the leg position with a sharpie before shooting.

I do have trouble squaring up behind the rifle at a bench, maybe I should just shoot prone

Well, practice loading the bipod anyway. Squaring up behind the rifle makes a HUGE difference in how much it moves (I can spot hits with an un-braked .300wm from prone off a bipod but struggle off a bipod on a bench with an AR due to lateral jump), and I know it's hard to do on certain benches.

Yeah, like a smooth concrete slab with a wooden step stool with tgree different length legs on gravel as a seat? Because I legitimately want to murder people every time I sit down at that POS.

There also isn't a single fucking tutorial online for squaring up behind a rifle at a bench, everything is for prone

So don't worry about the time limits, just get out and shoot. We'd MUCH rather you ignore the time limit and post a target than simply not do it.
