what are your thoughts on modern advertising for the military compared to the past?
>WOOO DRESS BLUES WITH A SWORD
In the former half of the 20th century, there's this overarching theme of shame in recruitment posters. "Join his majesty's army, or you're a no good ponce."
Even more so than today, they tried to make war look glamorous. Perhaps an easier job before the media saturation of the Vietnam era.

They did a much better fucking job of it.

I'd rather have just one cartoon per branch every decade than a million dumbass commercials every year.

>Implying I didn't fight the dragon as a young Marine
Fucking boots these days. He doesn't show up until you drop acid.
They could even make a stint in the coastguard look manly and appealing. Note that while the puddle pirates did have an easier time than other branches, "an easier time" in the biggest war on earth still means a couple thousand of them died.

"You won't have to say 'Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana' ".

The vibe used to be "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
Honor, duty, patriotism, pride.

Have some fun, hang-out with friends, fly in helicopters, diversity, "my" Army, cool toys.
My great grandpa Pete did his bit in WWII. As a kid, little Pete found an old mining camp with his friends. He got hold of a fuse and tried to light it and watch it sizzle. Surprise! It was detcord! As a young man trying to get into the war, he found he couldn't be a soldier with three stubby fingers on one hand, but there was a branch of the service that would take him. While lacking the glamor of the military proper, the Merchant Marine was a vital service that recruited just as hard as the other branches. Plus with the U-Boat threat being common knowledge, nobody would question one's manhood for being a mere civilian sailor during the war.

this is a total ripoff of that Halo 3 commercial

Good on him

More merchant marines died than any other service's casualties. 1/26 sailors. The U-boat menace was real.

Patton was absolute kino
fantastic movie choice desu
I remember one despicable ad for the US Army that was a bunch of B&W panning shots over photos of WWII and then match cut them to more B&W photos of Iraq and Afghanistan
Like YUP, ITS JUST LIKE WWII, VERY HONORABLE, NOT FOR PROFIT OR ANYTHING- JOIN THE ARMY
