This is a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. Are the Marines really all marketing or is the whole package worth having to pass some of the most rigorous PFT standards and having substandard gear and living conditions compared to other branches? For enlisted and/or officers.

Please leave the "fuck teh Marines xD" posts out.

They're good at a limited doctrinal set of being a full "military in a box" that can start a fight anywhere until the Army and Air force show up.

How heavy are Counselor based diagnoses compared to psychiatrist diagnoses? Would they require waivers? What if it can be proven it did not fit DSM criteria?

As well, in an injury paperwork from a general practitioner MD, it says I had depression symptoms and anxiety, but did not list a diagnostic code on them. Does that mean it cannot be interpreted as having Depression/Anxiety issues? Was just me being sadboi over being unable to train and extremely painful recovery period until I was sure it was going to heal right.

>some of the most rigorous PFT standards
You run a mile more than the other branches. The PFT for the Marines is by no means "rigorous" if you are even moderately in shape.

>having substandard gear
Marines usually get the cool stuff a few years after the Army, but yes, the entire mentality behind the Corps is "Marines make due." Note that I am not saying this is a bad thing: you notice how guys in prison can get jacked as fuck despite not having access to the entire gym? A fancy new rifle is nothing if the person operating it doesn't know what they are doing. Personally, I grew up around the idea of "make every cent count" so adjusting to that wasn't very difficult for me. I've never needed, say, a new phone because my "old" one was broken -- take care of your shit and it will take care of you.

>living conditions
Word is that they're actually renovating a lot of the older barracks. I got lucky with my duty stations, so I cannot attest to the hellscapes like Twentynine Palms. To be honest though, I have some friends would argue that the Marine Corps' bases are heavily dependent upon what is around. One of my 03 friends swapped from Camp LeJeune to 29P to prep for deployment and he didn't hate it as much as I expected, partly due to the fact that it's about 3 hours away from Las Vegas, so if you get weekend libo and access to a car then that's a great option.

Dumb questions:
Was there ever a reason to join the marines over the army? Like back in the early to mid 1900's? It seems like they always got the short end of the stick, especially in the pacific.

I'm a no car no license poorfag. How fucked am I if I join the army. My main reason for joining is that I'm a poorfag in a dead end town with a very cancerous family. I just want to get away from it all. Looking at 11x

It's good when there was a war. I was an 0311. I even turned down a 20k sign on bonus to be a Marine instead of army airborne.

Don't during peace time tho, go Army.
>>
>>34960580
>Was there ever a reason to join the marines over the army?

During WW2? Pearl Harbor. That pissed a LOT of Americans off, so when the Marines said "We're going to fuck the Japanese up, you in?" you better believe that they had people pouring in.

Today? They're really more or less the same. Marines are still more proud than the Army, but any training they have to put them above and beyond is minuscule. A lot of soldiers I've worked with and spoken to hold Marines in a very high regard.

>I'm a no car no license poorfag. How fucked am I if I join the army.
You need a state-issued ID, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a driver's license. As for the car, you won't be driving for at least a good year unless you live off base (which, if you're single, you won't.)

>My main reason for joining is that I'm a poorfag in a dead end town
A lot of people join for this reason.

>My main reason for joining is that I'm a poorfag in a dead end town with a very cancerous family.

not going to comment on the ins and outs of military, since I haven't served (lots of family/friends who did though) But that's probably one of the best reasons to join, IMO. Learn some discipline. And the best thing you can do is jump on whatever higher education they'll pay for, as quick as possible. You can often start online courses while serving. That education will be the single thing to keep you from falling back into hometown bullshit once you serve your time.

Also, don't get a big head about Military service. Some of the best people join our Military, and some of the worst do too. Statistically it's made up of pretty much the same type of guys as any field outside of higher education. It's usually not about glory or "muh freedoms", it's about furthering yourself while potentially being fodder for governmental interests.

Whatever you do, clear your mind of all the flag fellating, troop worship bullshit that they try to indoctrinate kids with since birth in this country. That's horseshit. They will use you, abuse you, and do their best to avoid paying for the damage once it's done. But if you go into it with an honest mindset you can do a lot of good while you're in there, and greatly further your life.

Might I ask, what are these points they're referring to? Are they from standardized testing that you have to take? I'd imagine that the British army would set their standards relatively high for 18 year olds to enter as officer. Education wise, that is. Not British, but I'd say your best bet would be to go back and study your ass off.

I keep getting told TSC is the worst command, but so far everyone here seems to be a piece of shit who is only concerned with themselves. People purposely getting set back in training to get diffrent rates or malingering so they can just sit on medholds and collect a paycheck. I really didn't want to be one of those guys who is always complaing about what branch he joined, but I'm really regretting not doing my research before signing that paper. I definitely plan on finishing my contract, but at this point I'm either going to want to get out as soon as my six years are up and finish my degree, but if I re-up I think I'm gunna wanna do it with a different branch. Ill just ask here again. My recruiter is asking me to get paperwork that is seemingly impossible for me to get. He wants documentation on a criminal history on my record which has been deleted a long time ago. Neither the court nor the police station are able to give me anything on it. I am planning on trying to see if the FBI has any information on it. My recruiter is suggesting that it WILL show up on the FBI record, but the police station is saying even the FBI will have deleted it. Problem is, according to the FBI site, average wait time to get results is 10 weeks.

Is my recruiter just trying to get rid of me since it seems like it will be more difficult for him to get me in than most recruits? If thats the case, how can I ask him if that is how he feels?

Anyone in the security force? How is it? From my understanding it can be boring but theres alot of stuff you can branch into like k9, counter sniper, or ravens.

Also, bit of an autistic question but is the anthrax vaccine safe? I stumbled across a documentary called direct order and it was filled with soldiers (some high ranking ones) bitching that the anthrax shot fucked them up. The comments of the vid were literred with people saying they had problems after taking it. But i see vets all the time and they seem fine. I dont really want to give myself a life long ailment for 4 years of service.

So yea, anyone get the anthrax shot and not come down with an auto immune problem or have noticeable memory issues?

Thanks.

You need to be a permanent resident to get into the US military, so your work visa (H-1Bs are difficult to get) won't be accepted. Also, previously serving in a foreign military (from the US perspective) could be disqualifying so you might want to email an Army recruiter in the US and ask that specifically. There's a high chance you would have to denounce your Australian citizenship to serve in the American Army, unless you found a joint unit if those even exist. Also check out the Overseas Lateral Transfer Scheme; it's an Australian program for foreign military members to join the ADF. Email an American recruiter and ask if there is any kind of program like that for the US military.
Alternatively, you could serve in the ADF and get higher pay and better conditions, attempt to become an officer, and then try to get into an officer exchange program to work with the US Army for a while.

"I don't know" is going to always be interpreted as "YES"
"Maybe" is not a word you want in your mindset there.

Stick to what you told them already, because you only look like a liar if it differs, even if you think it will be okay to bring up something new. Their job is to assume you are a total liar as most people there are.
Make sure you can get the paperwork for medical shit etc. beforehand and what it says, in case it becomes relevant.
Everybody forgets minor shit or "forgets" minor shit.
Don't fuck yourself, basically, you're there to sell yourself. Also the thing thing about going to prison etc. is bullshit, most of the scare tactics are bullshit but I don't remember the details on it all enough to feel comfortable outlining it.
You're a product, not a person there.

Anybody here dealt with a Security Clearance before? I was put on anti depressants when i was 16 and 17 im 21 now and feel fine.
If I don't tell MEPS and the investigator about this stuff and everyone I listed as a reference stays quiet or doesnt know about it how likely am I to get in?
What kind of stuff do they look for in these secuity clearances? Do they go over everything or do they just look for credit, crime, and travel out of country???
Its been my dream since I was a child to go into Spec Ops and I don't want that ruined because I had a rough patch in life...

Never, ever, lie to the security clearance people about anything that has been written down. Even things that haven't been written down, but are still known by people in addition to you, are not worth lying over.

They have complete access to everything. Doctor patient confidentiality is for single mothers and old people. The US Federal Government is seeing if you're a liar or not. They've seen it all before.

>Do they go over everything or do they just look for credit, crime, and travel out of country???
Crime will have come up at a far earlier stage than their checks. Credit checks are the same deal, but finance is a big one. Travel out of the country is important, but really they're not that bothered about that unless you've gone hitchhiking in Afghanistan or spent a year working for the Chinese government. They know when you entered and left the USA.

What they're trying to find out is: "Is this guy going to get blackmailed/lose stuff/leak information/sell our information?" They're finding out if you gamble. They'll ask friends of friends, who you never put down as references, what you're like when you drink. They will find out about drug use, believe me. Unless you took drugs entirely on your own in a concrete room and never told anyone. Do you cheat on your girlfriend? What kind of porn you watch, what you say about blacks/Jews/Muslims/whatever.

They will find out that you took anti depressants and they will recommend what steps to take to a group of very senior people who approve these sorts of things. Basically you're going to get shitcanned.

A lot, but even if it was zero it doesn't take a genius to figure out:

>Anti depressant usage prevents me from doing a job
>I am going for this particular job
>I have taken anti depressants
>The people employed to investigate my entire life, especially my stability and reliability, are going to find out about this
>When they do find out about it, it will be recorded
>You won't get in, or if you are in, you'll be out.

Or do you think they make exceptions because someone "feels fine"?

Route Recon/Route Clearance.

Part of a Scout's job is making sure tanks can move through an area. Destroying obstacles is a way to do that.
>>
>>34970431
Because that's the way it is. Either go for a job requiring a lower level of clearance or forget it. You can try, but it'll be hanging over you for ever even if you do manage to get in.

The problem is, suppose they took your word for it. Then, when under stress, you flip out and harm yourself or someone else. Then, when the investigation is carried out, it turns out that someone overruled a hard and fast rule on anti-depressant usage.

I wouldn't let someone with a history of anti depressant usage, regardless of their current state, near a firearm. I especially wouldn't let them have unsupervised and unrestricted access to information.
>>
>>34970332
>>34970386
Well, a clearance takes time to run through. If you can't even get a Secret they'll reassign you by "Needs of the Army" before you can start AIT. Which usually means cook or truck driver.

No you won't be.

If it states, in plain English, that a history of using anti depressants precludes you from doing the job and you lie about it at MEPS, when it comes to clearance time it will come up in the investigation and you will get dishonorably discharged or rejected.

If you stopped and everything is going ok, they won't care too much. But if you are still really concerned find a priest or pastor to talk to and get them as a reference to claim you found religion as a good support. Religious but depressed seems natural to most recruiters.

Supervisors, principal if you left school recently, professors, sport coaches, religious figures. There should be a guidance form with who is suitable and who isn't.

All of those people will then pass the investigator on to others that had contact with you. They will have done this before. Medical records aren't even looked through during an SSBI. Unless of course the investigator finds out from talking to references that you're a suicidal maniac or a paranoid schizophrenic. But for small stuff, they will call the care provider and ask one thing and one thing only: is this person able to handle classified information, and a yes or no answer is given and everyone moves on. However, you'll still have some explaining to do as to why you didn't put it down on your SF-86. Many investigators deal will recruiters telling young 18 year olds to lie. E1-E4 are almost entirely by time in service/time in grade, though those can be waivered for earlier promotion for merit, or delayed for misconduct. College grads get automatic enlistment at E4.

E5-E6 are through the promotion points and board system. Which is about 50% PT and weapons score, and the rest based on mostly correspondence courses and some from awards and Army schools, along with a handful from being approved by the promotion board, which is a dog and pony show.

just took the DLAB yesterday ,Passing score is 95 , I got 103 and the max I think is around 160.

though you only need a score of 110 to " qualify " for the the most difficult category of language.

the tests auditory segment is the 75% of the test and its most difficult aspect is that you can only listen to the answers ONCE, then choose an answer.

I took the computerized version which im sure most will. In my version ( i dont know if they switch up the auditory categories ) the first section was the worst for me but as the test goes on and you will quickly get the hang of it.

In my case the first section was identifying which word out of the four fake language words had a different stressed syllable. Im sure I got most wrong in this segment since it wasn't until later that I started to see and hear what they meant. The next 3 segments are fake language given rules that you must translate in your head, then play the audio to listen which answer was the correct one. Since each one is only said once and right after one another. I used my mouse to hover over whichever one sounded correct and skipping over which one was obviously wrong. It is easy to immediately forget which one is which and was said which way. It sounds more difficult than it is but it is definitely not easy from the get go.

Lastly my advice is simply research some videos that give SIMPLE examples of stressed syllables, what is a noun, adjective, possessor, subject. Becuase you will be given a sentence in english then have to orginzing correctly in your head apply the rules. For example : Every verb will start with " Ju " , run = Jurun, or/and a verb cant come after a subject etc.

Goodluck fellas
>>
>>34974163
While the structure is still fresh in my mind heres an example Ill make up. of a section

Rules:

1. the subject word has an " oo " in the middle

2. Verbs start with " Ju " and cannot end in " s "

3. adjectives and their nouns must end with the same vowel. Adjectives and thei nouns can only end in " a " or " u"

Sentence: The perfect Glock blows up.

Correct translation: The perfectu Glooocku jublow up.

( when you listen to the Answer audio for each letter , the words can be in any order as its specified they do NOT have to follow english sentence structure IE: The Glooocku jublow up perfectu ; could also be correct since it fits the rules )

Now that you have the translation In your head, you listen to the answers and try to pick the one that sounds the most correct.

The last audio section is similar to this but with a couple more rules I think. The last section is picture-word association. you are shown some pictures of things that are given fake language words, then also on the screen are pictures without their word, you must deduce their word using the context of the above pictures.

Women can ruin even the best men with that wet slit between their legs. Look at Peggy Shipped. Please tell me the truth, did I just get royally fucked or not?

I enlisted into the Marine Corps DEP a few days ago, and I was told by my recruiter and the MEPS lady that I would be signing a "temporary open contract", and that later on, I would sign the actual contract with one of the top three MOS I asked for, and he said that everyone goes through this. They gave me the ship date which is quite a while away, and I made it very clear to the recruiter that I wanted to make sure he wasn't fucking me over with an open contract when I signed my MOS forms before going to MEPS. Is this really standard procedure, or did I get fucked big time? And if I did, is there a way I can reverse before leaving for basic? I'm looking at what I think is my contract (dd form 4) and I don't see any mention of an mos, ship date, or mention of being in an open contract.

Right, however I was told that in order to get into the DEP, my contract would be open contract, and that later in a couple weeks or months I would sign another contract that would include my MOS in writing, and that this contract will override the open contract I signed when I swore into the DEP. I want to know if this is bullshit or not.

Wrong.

Technical collections do make up a significant portion of collections as technical platforms have improved over time. HUMINT is still important for providing context to technical collections, and if you've ever actually sat down and read traffic it is not 99% technical collections.

They can find out quite a lot, especially if they're doing an intensive investigation. You sign over the right for them to poke into all sorts of records if they want to

It's not a big deal though, there's almost nothing that will actually stop you from getting a clearance unless you lie about stuff. If you're not in debt and not actually planning the downfall of the US government, just being upfront about everything will get you through the clearance process 99 % of the time.
>>
>>34974868

this is completely normal. this happens when you join the DEP and will be called and told you have to go back to MEPs to actually sign your contract before you ship. You can sign all the paperwork you want and even go to ship out, but you haven't begun your contract until you physically arrive at boot camp. Any time before then you can simply just say, nah fuck off, and walk away. Your recruiter will lie to you and say you are in a binding agreement- but that's just because he won't get credit for you until you ACTUALLY ship and arrive at boot. Did you do the oath of enlistment? That's a non binding oral brainwashing that exists solely to try to keep kids commited from backing out from the time they first go to MEPs till the day they ship. don't stress, kiddo

hey!
how's it going?

nearly twenty-three years old ethiopian here. i've reached a crossroad in my life where i really have to decide if i want to pursue my childhood dreams of becoming a soldier (grandfather was a soldier under the monarchy & the derg era, was a military attaché to south-korea) or travel to england for my masters degree in financial economics. i don't really envision myself as being able to lead an average joe lifestyle as i am an easily bored thrill seeker that despises all things permanent.
that said, the ethiopian army nor the air force is no longer what it was at the time of my grandfather, so i really have no other choice than to look elsewhere for my enlistment. as of now, i'm considering joining the foreign legion (i speak french fluently) but both the israeli military (i can gain admission by claiming that i am a felasha jew) and the us military (thinking of making use of the naturalization through military service program) are on the table.
so, which one do you lot recommend i try out for?
thanks for reading my blog
>>

>>
>>34981127
>us military (thinking of making use of the naturalization through military service program) are on the table.

Unless you've already got a US greencard, this probably isn't going to happen.
>>
>>34981232
correct, but a united states green card is easy to get hold of. especially when you're immigrating from an east african country.
>travel to the us on tourist visa
>claim asylum (muh dictatorship and whatnot)
>???
>win
almost all of my childhood friends have since gotten their greencards after traveling there for their undergraduate degree.
>>
>>34981360

Best case scenario as an asylum-seeker you're looking at a 2-3 process to get a green card after you arrive in the US. Then probably at least another year from there to being able to earn citizenship via enlistment.

If this is something you want to do, you should probably have started yesterday.
>>
>>34981394
that's fine, i'm in no hurry to get my legs blown off, haha! but on a more serious note, it never has been a priority for me to gain us citizenship. it's just another stepping stone that will hopefully give me the necessary clearance to become a soldier, or better yet a fighter pilot.
couldn't care less if it was the senegalese military that i was serving in as long as i make squad marksman or fighter pilot. this might sound ignorant of me to say that i'm not really inclined with the ideals of a country whose military i'm serving in, but i can't be the only one. i'm sure that there are many other who'd follow suit.
so, fingers crossed, i'd be on my way to *insert name of next country that america has decided to spread democracy in* three or fours years from now.

also, why doesn't the foreign legion update it's gear? it's almost as if they're setting their soldiers up for failure.
>>
>>34981536

If you want to be a fighter pilot that's going to be an even longer trek with a lot of pitfalls.

>also, why doesn't the foreign legion update it's gear? it's almost as if they're setting their soldiers up for failure.

Military gear is much less about what is most effective on an individual basis, and much more about what is cost-effective to supply and maintain across an entire force. If it's anything like the US, there's also undoubtedly a political element involved.
>>
>>34981212
>When do they give you the APFT, when you get there or to graduate?

We took the 1/1/1 assessment when I got to basic (1 minute push up, 1 minute sit up, 1 mile run). Then a couple of weeks before we finished we took the full APFT. This was 2007 so they were still pushing people through but it was supposed to be required to go from basic to AIT. When I got to AIT we didn't take the APFT until a couple of weeks before we were supposed to graduate.

Then I had to take an APFT as soon as I got to my unit where I found out they gave a shit about height/weigh even if you were good on the APFT.

For Navy you need to be accepted into the community before going to OCS so you know which designator you're getting. Any you're interested in?
Since you're thinking of the ocean and being on a ship you might be leaning towards SWO. It's a surface ship officer, you don't get a choice of where they stick you in on a ship though, might be engine room or weapons. Hours are awful and being on a ship sucks, never be a SWO

Jocks fail harder and more frequently in the Marine Corps than they do any other branch. Their fragile ego's can't cope with going from the top of the pecking order where everyone sucks your dick to being yelled at like they're less than garbage. Ironically it is the average normally unimpressive man or even the ones who were bullied in school who find the most success in the Marine Corps because their egos and self esteem have a shorter distance to fall to. When I was in Bootcamp it was not the weak manlet who broke first it was in fact the highschool quarterback star of the football team who was the first to have an emotional breakdown and he never fully recovered.

There is "passing" and then there is making a high score. 3 miles in 18 minutes, 25 pullups, and 115 crunches in 2 minutes is bronze god levels of fitness compared to other branches.

>Word is that they're actually renovating a lot of the older barracks.

This has been the word for the past 20 years. IF it is happening, it is happening at such a slow pace as to not even be noticeable. >So which APFT is going to determine whether I get to go to Jump School?

Whatever the one is right before you go to BAC. In the Army generally you're only as good as your last APFT. Unless you're deployed and can actually do your job competently, then that matters too.
>>
>>34983404
>So assuming I super tryhard my cardio, its unlikely ill get kicked out?

Keep in mind that with SFAS you can just not get selected even if you go into the extended scale on the APFT, you can ruck like a machine, and your land nav is on point. You could just not be a good fit from the perspective of the evaluators and be asked to come back another time.

If you're a cunt you'll probably get hazed until you're ground down and get dropped for failure to maintain standards or just want to quit at Ranger Regiment.

Do you pick your MOS before or after OCS?

I knew the 25 pull up figure was bullshit (perfect score was 20), so I went and researched it. Apparently Marines can do push ups now instead, lmao.

marineocs.com, the shit never really changes. It's been 95% the same for the last 50 years.

Just know, compared to some of the other branch's officer programs, Marines have a pretty high attrition rate. My class was close to 50% but it's dependent on a lot of factors. It's a risky use of your time.

You don't really pick shit. The platoon commander stresses that you are a Marine and nothing else. You get a wishlist but that's good for dick unless you are top of your TBS.

Thanks for the advice

If I go the OCS route, will I still be able to participate in games of grab ass?

>All of these junior enlisted and freshly minted E-5s talking so much shit about how being an officer is easy
>Assert that officers don't know shit about the hands on part of the military and how it makes them bad officers, it should just be a promotion from enlisted, blah blah blah
>They maybe have responsibility for four people and can barely handle the paperwork and leadership requirements for that
>A freshly minted O-1 has the same responsibility level as an SNCO with 20+ years experience just to start with
>Your job even as a field grade officer is administration and leadership with maybe just a bit of field work thrown in

How is it that people who have enough information to know better than to assume an incorrect conclusion stick to it religiously regardless? Does it make them feel better?

You've never served or youre in ROTC and already dick riding yourself.
>>

Sure. Officer side the Marines is just as much of a gay self pretentious cult. Only difference is they've had four years to party at college so they do slightly less of it than enlisted who are away from home for the first time.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a Ph.D while an officer in the Navy, but not at either the NPS or the USUHS? My dream is to fly and then go into academia.

>My dream of getting my ass grabbed and being shot at will soon come true
>>
>>34985500
Do you mean in an official navy capacity? Not sure but you can certainly do it on your own free time.
>>
>>34985516
Either way. My thinking is that I obviously won't be able to fly for 20 years, so it would make more sense to fly as long as I can, then get a PhD from Uncle Sam and start my career in academia at either the NPS or USNA. Would it be possible to get out after 8 years, get the degree, the join back up?

Just curious, what were the primary reasons for candidates to drop out/ get sent home, also about what percentage of candidates who made it to the end received a commission offer?
