I served in joint branch units. In my opinion, the USMC is way more old school military than the other branches so they don't really socialize well with non-marines. They have a fucking blast when they are together, but they are too different than the general population to get along well with others. Also, there is a dash of that 'I'm better than you cuz I'm a muhreen' cult mentality. So when any other branch deals with a marine, it's an awkward situation. I got along great with AF guys, and Navy dudes were kind of awkward, but not at marine level.

As enlisted you pick a field. Example: Infantry.

It just means you go to SOI ITB: school of infantry, infantry training battalion. Then you get your MOS. Which is grunt. Most grunts are 0311s. But some are 0331, 0341, 0351... Etc. Those are our machine gunners, mortarmen, and assaultmen.

So as enlisted you can guarantee you'll be a grunt, just not which type. As I understand they'll do anything with officers tho.

It's actually not that interesting of a read tee bee aich, but okay. So, on ships there's a "time honored" tradition called cranking which almost everybody has to do. It's basically 3-4 months of being a glorified janitor/bus boy/dishwasher on the ship's mess decks. They call you an FSA (Food Service Agent), but that's just like calling the garbage man a "sanitation engineer". This doesn't sound so bad until the moment you realize that you are not subject to federal labor laws and you can and will be taken for a wild ride. I am not exaggerating when the Supply dept. chain of command treats you like slave labor (hell, even the slaves got to go to sleep when the sun went down). Days last from a minimum of 12 hours, and I think my record for longest day was 17 hours full of nothing but bullshit work that didn't really need to be done. On top of that, my work week was 12 days on, 2 days off. This is compounded by the fact that even the E-6s, E-7s, and officers are painfully retarded with how they manage time and resources. Every day I would look at the decisions they make and then almost instantly come up with a better solutions to how things could be managed, but it seemed like they just wanted to make things as inefficient and pointless as possible. Any time I spoke up, they just don't listen. I even had an E-6 who would literally not respond to me when I talked to her at times.

And they are fully aware of how shitty they treat you. The fucking Command Master Chief's
(head of enlisted squids on a ship) box was so stuffed with complaints that he had to arrange the head of supply department to "meet with the FSAs and hear them out", which amounted to him just holding a quarters and telling us why we can't complain about our treatment. And my entire chain of command fully backed him and acted like he had solved all our problems when he made LITERALLY NO CHANGES AND JUST TOLD US TO FUCK OFF.

No rock bleaching any more in the Air Force, or at least very little. It's a poor use of people who should be working. In Cold War units there were so many maintainers there were enough for that shit. Not any more.

I bleached my share in the 80s though. Fill trash can with water, add STB, stir with mop. Remove mop, add gravel, stir, let sit. Pour off water, reinstall gravel in the bed you weeded while gravel was whitening.

Not remotely as much shitter cleaning as your ignorant shitposting ass would think and it takes very few personnel. I'd take bay orderly over weeds and seeds (now done by contractors who hire downies for Federal preference) any day. Cleaning shitters is fast and easy. Mega pine oil in a mop bucket until water looks like cream, then mop everything. Bonus if pine oil smell is strong enough to chase inspectors out of the shithouse.

Air Force got the most intelligent troops since WWII AAF days. They were selected deliberately in the Army recruiting process. Aircraft give zero fucks if you are a tacticool athlete. For many years we literally didn't have PT (by tacit consent, we had sorties to generate) or had so little it was a joke, but then junk food make America obese. I walked my PT test smoking non-filter Camels and passed.

I know that at least for the CT field, Marine 2600's tend to be smarter than CT's or the army equivalent. That's primarily because the Marine Corps has a lot less sigint jobs than the other branches and can afford to be more selective for those job fields, but it still led to noticeable differences between the three branches at MOS school.
