No. Japan actually won the war. No US soldier ever stepped on Japanese soil until the war ended. Japan forced the US to pay billions of dollars in reparations for the war. And to this day Japan vassalizes America into fighting Japan wars which is why USA sends so many soldiers to protect and honor the Emperor.

The Brits also did this on the Archer SPG.

It allows for mounting a bigger gun, makes for less frontal overhang (and thus a smaller package), and for great hit and run tactics. Set up an ambush with the gun pointing forward,, fire a shot or two, and then have the driver, who is facing rearwards, get you out of there ASAP.

Japan had a really good military for ww1 or the Spanish Civil War.

The problem was that the admirals and generals were all old farts who saw little point in modernization. just keep using what worked in the past because it should always work.

Until after Midway. Japan thought they could defeat america with one or two major battle victories and demoralize americans into peace. like they did russia.

japan didn't have the resources or industrial base needed to fight a modern war. they had a GNP less than Italy and 1/10th that of the USA.

even though the justification for the war was Japan's need to get resources to grow their industry. they put very little thought and resources into securing their logistics. japanese cargo/tanker ships were sent alone and with no escort. which made them easy pickings for american submarines. it got to the point they were sending crude oil from malaysia to japan in submarines.
