Expensive glass is really dependant on use. Past a certain threshold you're paying for a rugged zero and accurate mechanics. So if you aren't a particularly good shot and don't care to shoot past a certain distance anyway, then yes, 400 will get you a decent scope. But optics are one of those things were you are really getting what you pay for

You need to spend at least 300 for a usable variable when he needs to min/max his budget as much as possible. is the correct answer for cheapest you should go on an ar10. MP 10 is the cheapest ar10 variant that is actually good quality. The negatives are that modding it is a pain in the ass because S&W use some kind of glue from the future that takes robot strength to remove the flash hider and gas block.

Optics wise, get primary arms or swfa. Primary arms has the edge because it has all the options you need for a long range scope, while Swfa has limited options but built with tougher parts.

If you don't include magazines or ammo, then that just leaves glass. I recommend a Primary arms 1-6 or 4-14 depending on how big an optic you want, either one is 280. Then an American Defense 30mm QD mount for about 120-160.
