I just graduated from college and I'm planning on taking the next 6 months to play amateur journalist to build something of a real-world portfolio.

My main topic is going to be antifa and associated riots, so I'm going to need a gas mask.

What sort of mask would you recommend? I'll be using it more than once, so the ability to swap filters is a must. A relatively good field of view would also be a plus.

tl;dr: what is the cheapest mask I can buy that has reasonable fov and replaceable filters?
>>
Israeli mask with new Israeli, German, or Swiss filters, although it has rather poor fov. The filters are 40mm, and might fit another mask like the one on the far right of OP pic
>>
Czech m10m. Yeah, it's got the hard to change cheek filters. Most came in with the training/riot filters. They'll last you a life time. Just rinse filters every now and then. You'll be in and out under $20.
>>
Thanks for the replies, any other advice on these situations?

I'm thinking about ways to not lose my camera/have it ripped out of my hands, and possibly a plate carrier or soft armor that I can put a "PRESS" patch on
>>
>>34958274
>any other advice
I'd say the best advice (aside from avoiding these bloodbaths-in-waiting entirely) is to be a neutral party. Be distant, physically and metaphorically. Do interviews from the backs of crowds, get footage from the rooftops. Present yourself as a member of the press.

Branding a soft ballistic vest and/or helmet (also a good idea to wear) with PRESS in clear bold lettering will likely help alleviate (not prevent) hostilities.

Know when to be gone. If things are being thrown and the opposing crowds start scuffling, it's time to make like a tree and get the fuck out. Also take the time to learn some simple psychology. Knowing how to deflect, distract, and defend goes a long way when faced with upset and irrational people. Know when to put up your hands, hunch down, say "sorry" (even if you aren't), and back away.

Use simple niceties and a light hand on the shoulder to move through less rough crowds, and footing + body weight for rougher crowds.

Good luck out there.

Get a good lanyard or harness/sling/whatever the fuck for your camera. Keep your mask in a bag until gas starts flying so you don't look prepared.
>>
>>34958007
I have one and its pretty cool. just make sure to clean it out thoroughly before you wear it or you'll breathe in white powder that burns your lungs like I did.
>>
>>34958274
A plate carrier would make you look like a faggot and a target. You should stick with soft armor if you felt inclined, but you'd be more at risk from head injuries from thrown rocks etc or clubs or fists.
>>
skip the meme shit and buy a panoramic 3m or other commericial mask/ respirator. You're not cosplaying like these nerds and they offer various readily available filters for various profiles.
>>
>>34958837
Would a bump helmet be appropriate? I see a lot of reporters and bystanders with head injuries.

>>34958842
Fair enough, but wouldn't a gas mask be a little sturdier? I'm thinking about getting hit in the face, and neither the 3m or czechnology is going to prevent all damage, but the military models seem likelier to make some difference.

It looks like those go for ~$100 online. Are they worth it over a $20-$30 milsurp option? They certainly look more professional. And the field of view looks fantastic
>>
>>34959044
it's (current) industrial PPE, so if it has the proper ratings it should be better than the (dated, even if only slightly) milsurp. I think the professional looks might be exactly what you want, because you won't be participating in the riot.
>>
>>34959097
That's a good point. Good thing I've been saving up for this little project lol.

I don't suppose you're familiar with which 3M filters will handle tear gas?
>>
>>34958007
have one can vouch for filter changing being a bitch
>>
>>34957804
Plate carrier, bump helmet, and press tags aren't that bad of an idea. Stay safe OP

Make sure to link is your YouTube or website so we can see how it goes :^)

Get the XM28 respirator

sorry, i do not.

Here's a crazy idea. How about a sling for your camera? I know it's radical but think about it

If you want a cheap gas mask you could get this
http://www.budk.com/German-M65-Gas-Mask-With-Filter-Like-New-34269
Cheap, it uses standard NATO 40mm filters.
Just make sure to adjust it properly.
>>
>>34957804
hi OP, I have done similar reporting in riots in France, I just bought a Swiss gas mask with filters in a milsurp store, soft armour is what you should wear, with a press tag ofc, also get a decent helmet and tag that too, you should caryy a first aid kit with you as well as a concealed baton/taser/small can of pepper spray. if you see anyone on the outside of the protest/riot who is hurt, help to administer first aid, the protesters will most likely not cause you any trouble after seeing you help their own kind

camera gear is fucking expensive, see if you can get some bump protection for it
>>
>>34957804
What does it mean when the mask is passed its expiry date? Like past its shelf life? Will it not work? Most Israeli masks say theyre past their date but would it work if you put a new filter?
>>
>>34960443
looks fucking cool though

Anti theft camera straps are a thing. Never wear it around your neck; always slung over a shoulder and across the chest (like you would a single point rifle sling).

>>
>if you see anyone on the outside of the protest/riot who is hurt, help to administer first aid

I would advise against this. As a press member you are there to record the events; that's it. The reason both the cops and the protesters leave the press alone is because they are judged to be impartial observers. The minute you are seen helping one side or the other, that impartiality goes right out the window and you become a target for the other side.

check the rubber for cracks and make sure you can get a good seal, but expiration dates aren't hard rules.

For FOV and style points I'd reccomend an MSA Millenium, as they use standard 40mm and have the best FOV hands down. They also have a hard plastic plate on the front of tthe hr mask to protect your face. Expensive, and dont accidentally buy an MSA advatntage, its a different mask.

The cheap milsurp version is the MCU-2/P, but beware, the lenses are usually yellowed with age because they used a shitty rubber compound when making them.

Pic related, the plastic outsert will stop firework shrapnel.

Heres the Millenium next to an MCU-2.
>>
>>34959109
Any filter which does particulates will do it. Tear gas is a poweder which is despersed in the air, and pretty much any filter will stop it. Riot filters generally carry the P100 rating, but even N-95 is better than nothing.
>>
>>34962176
Good point about armor. IF op does armor it should be a helmet, not body armor. A batters helmet with "PRESS" on it would look pretty cool actually

I got pic related it says an M17A1 earlier today for 14.99 did I do good? I made a thread but I figured id get more attention here.

It seems to fog up a lot while im wearing it, is there any way to stop this?
>>
>>34958944
The facepiece on civ respirators has to meet ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact, etc.

>quibbling over price

Excatly how much are your lungs worth to you? Do you really want to go with the cheapest available option?
>>
>>34962842
Well you got a gas mask for 15 bucks that's the same price as a crappy GP-5 kit so you did well anon. I wouldn't use it btw

why not? ive had it one for about 45 minutes now trying to figure out why its fogging up

I think i got it btw, it only fogs up when the hood it attached. Don't know why yet. Is around the nose supposed to seal? cause it isnt really, so it gets a little fogged each time I exhale, then clears up each time I inhale.
>>
>>34963261
>gets a little fogged each time I exhale, then clears up each time I inhale.
That's normal, don't worry I'm sure it can be fixed tho. I meant that I wouldn't use it in a CBRN environment. Maybe the filters aren't in good shape, who knows
>>
>>34963293
I doubt im going to encounter sarin or irradiated dust in north florida, maybe tear gas, but I hear that even bad filters will handle that no problem.
