I'm very interested in this caliber but have no experience with it.

It's very popular in Mexico and was popular in the US in the 1930s with both gangsters and lawmen. The old Colts from that time are supposedly inaccurate because of construction issues with the barrel and chamber, but they've fixed those problems in the new ones. CDNN has a sale on Colt Competition pistols in that caliber and Colt is doing a "gear" rebate on them, too.

Actually this is bullshit because the main downside of the .38 Super is that it has a rim which limits it to single stack magazines and it wasn't until more recently that the (i) has come out which is rimless. If the cartridge would have been rimless to begin with then yes it would problaby been more popular than the 9x19mm because A) you would have the same carrying capacity as the 9mm (.38 super is a straight wall cartridge) B) it is a more powerful cartridge like the .45 acp (Buffalo Bore has +P loadings that make this cartridge perform like a light .357 magnum).
