It was cursed.
Launched by Lizzy Morrison, the daughter of the last SS Scorpion (ww2 diesel), that u-boot also lost all hands.
Also the SSN overhaul was junk. It should have never been granted a diving license.
There is a wiki article on the failures of the EMBT.
This would hint to why it ran ground.
