Depends on the competition and it's rules really.
Bullseye go custom 1911 or Sig P210
IPSC production go Glock 17 or CZ Shadow 2, other divisions look into 1911s and tanfoglios.

Really shoot what you like in a competition that suits it. Unless you say what kind of competition I can't recommend a specific model.

Anything Walther, Anschütz, S&W, Ruger Mk series, Benelli.
Look into used guns, use the money saved on good grips and ammo.

Pardini sp is really great too, try to find a used one. The new are expensive but it is a wonderful pistol for someone aspiring to be a serious competition shooter.
