Alright, so a recent thread got me thinking. The more I look around, the more I see law enforcement agencies and armies outright abandoning the use of shotguns. When I was in the infantry, my unit phased out all of our Mossberg shotguns in favor of other breaching tools. SWAT teams seem to pretty much exclusively use rifles and pistols as a lethal option and shotguns are only used for riot/non lethal roles. Are "combat shotguns" a thing of the past?
If yes, why? If no, why?
Not trying to push a viewpoint here because I honestly don't have one.

They'll have a place as breaching tools for a good while yet, but as dedicated combat weapons they've largely gone the way of the SMG and revolver (and pistols as a whole for 99% of applications). IE, still shoot bullets that kill, but not ideal and not something anyone would use if they have the luxury of choosing their equipment.

I can see shotguns making a comeback as a attachment weapon.

These guys are right, dubs don't lie. Shotguns can also shoot less than lethal rounds for crowd control. I'd say, in a firefight, a carbine is better. Anything other than a firefight, a shot gun is prolly more useful.

No. Shotguns are barbaric weapons that have no place in warfare.

Until a rifle is made that can fire nine 8mm balls under a second.

Any 9mm smg with a ROF higher than 600/m can achieve that.

That man made great bullets, and we're all worse off for their closure.

The guy is quite the character.

the 6 12 is a thing of beauty. Heard the ATF said that they'd count the OAL of the entire gun instead of just the tube. Might make its 2k price tag swallow-able.
The mil is already using a bolt actuated underslung one that by all accounts is awkward. With drones and breaching here to stay, I think we might see one or two of these per squad.

Heard this from a 27 year police veteran so take it with a grain of salt considering the average cop is absolutely retarded when it comes to guns, but apparently it's because of collateral damage, the cone and barrier penetration of buckshot made it very undesirable among armies and especially police.

This thing? Only thing is, I wonder why not just turn the grenade launchers into one big ol' slug or buck for the breaching.
>>34952523
yep. That thing.
It's another "Anyone could easily take 3 rounds of birdshot/gameshot and be fine" thread.

>Do Shotguns Have a Place In Lethal Combat?
Yes. Shotguns are a very violent and decisive weapon. Shooting a load of 00 buckshot at an attacker is almost a guaranteed fight stopper. There are many cases where defensive shotgun usage only required one round to stop the fight, no other kind of gun can do this reliably.
Now, add a skilled shotgun user behind the gun and you have a very deadly combination. While people think shotguns aren't worth a shit because some of them have wood and blued steel, no DBAL or Aimpoint to be seen anywhere, they are still extremely viable home defense weapons.
Here's a video of Steve Fisher from Sentinel Concepts getting 4 rounds of both slug and buck downrange in under 2 seconds with a pump action
https://youtu.be/er_pvyeuIp8?t=145
With buckshot, that's 8-9 pellets per shot. Multiply that and you have effectively shot someone 36 times. Now, imagine that with someone with a quality semi-auto such as the Beretta 1301 Tactical or one of the Benelli shotguns.
The reason why you see most police officers use AR15's is because they're just easier to shoot, especially for females. The shotguns that are issued to police usually have bead sights, a hunting length stock that is not optimal for defensive shotgun shooting and they're usually not well trained enough to properly manage a shotgun.
While I'm a huge advocate of the shotgun for home defense, I would opt for an AR15 for LE/SWAT use. The AR15 is more flexible in the sense that it can be used to deal with threats out to a longer distance that a shotgun cannot reliably reach out with an acceptable level of accuracy and safety of any possible innocent bystanders while being able to be used in close distances as well.
And most importantly of all: Shotguns are fun to shoot. This is a scientific fact.

Buck, stop bullying Sledge for not using his shotty for breaching

Also, 5.56 can penetrate soft armor that's becoming increasingly common for bad guys to wear. Buck/slugs can't. I know, blunt force trauma and such, but blunt force trauma isn't as reliable of a stopper as large bleeding holes in your heart and lungs.
