Buy something used and under priced on armslist.

You could probably find a 3rd gen smith, sig sp2022, beretta 92f, Ruger security six, S&W model 10, or something similar for a good price. All are great deals for the cost and very shootable guns. Hell, some of them even border on being legitimately useful compared to modern contemporaries.

I always recommend the same thing for first gun buy. 22lr single action army. You can find em for 100-200 dollars, buy a metric fuckload of ammo, and it'll always be fun even as you buy more guns.

But if you like pistols or rifles more, any 22 is a good choice.

As a 19 year old college student, I'd say anything cheap to get and shoot.
The SKS, Makarov and other surplus that actually shoots obtainable ammo would be a good choice

Entry level ARs and Aks are great for us college kids too.

HiPoint carbines are ugly as fuck but they are also cheap as fuck and shoot very common cheap ammo
In terms of handguns, Glocks, Springfields, RIA 1911s, etc are all solid
