Edition: Rifle, Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfield.
Got my replacement buttstock for the rusty 1916 BSA Mk.III* I bought a couple weeks ago. Here it is all cleaned up and mounted. It's beech rather than walnut and has some rack markings, but by luck of the draw I got a long one.
The 1" increase in length of pull feels a world of difference. Excited to try shooting it now.

Can't wait until Labor Day week. Hopefully my funs from RIA will be here, I'm gonna spend most of a day just cleaning and taking pics of most of my funs.

Special thanks to Anon for making one while I was at work
Bully me for my shit taste
Pawn shop has what they claim is a polish mosin. I dont know much aboit them but this looked pristine, i honestly cant tell if its been refurbished or not. I think they were asking 350.
Unrelated but can anyone point me towards tbe following: enfield clips, mosin clips, type 38 clips(did they even use clips) and a type 38 sling. Thanks.
>>34943351
Liberty Tree has Enfield and Mosin clips, they're out of stock on Type 38 clips though.
>>34943351
It's a Polish-made M44. They are often found in excellent condition; whether that's because they went generally unissued or because the Poles did really good jobs refurbishing them IDK, but people pay a lot for them. I think $350 is a decent price; I've seen them go as high as $600 for an all-matching pristine example.
>type 38 clips(did they even use clips)
Of course. I'm told Swedish Mauser 6.5x55 clips work OK; I have one original T38 charger so IDK how they compare.
>and a type 38 sling.
eBay or various forum WTS/WTT boards; I got my repro one from mrnambu on Gunboards.
>>34943305
Is that a 96/11 or a 1911 rifle?
>>34943422
I got some enfield clips from them but none work right. Theyre all super tight and mare tbe brass loading/unloading them. Pushing them into the magazine may as well be impossible. Did they get mkre mosin clips, last time i checked they were out.
>>34943449
That would make sense i guess. Heres another shitty picture. If its there after my vacation i may grab it. Id like a more normal mosin to compare to my m39.
I figured clips for the type 38 were gonna be a pain in the ass to find. How do you like yours? I hate the sights on mine and the trigger is terrible but its fun to handle and looks pretty.
>>34943449
>>34943351
I REALLY want an M44, I wish my local stores had one for $350 in that shape.
>>34943493
>>34943498
My bad, it was 400. I just checked the picture again. Why do you want an m44? Theyre kind of cool but they look so goofy, Something about the proportions.
>>34942857
>>34943466
1911
>>34943498
I wish the stores around me had anything like that selection, I can only really ever find one milsurp rifle per store, and most of them are way too overpriced to seriously consider buying.
>>34943351
>>34943498
My pristine Hungarian one was $350
>>34943522
M44s are fun shooters. They were typically sighted in with the bayonet fixed so if you shoot with with folded you'll likely be off on windage.
the extra weight from the bayo can be annoying at times, but hey - it makes it look mean.
>>34943493
>sporterized, sporterized, sporterized, sporterized...
Did they spare the Vetterli-Vitali at least?
>How do you like yours? I hate the sights on mine and the trigger is terrible but its fun to handle and looks pretty.
Mismatched school rifle that bulges cases and pierces primers and a muzzle that will swallow a T38 cartridge to the case lip. But it's like 5' long and from 1909, so I love it. Sights are pretty ass; as bad as most Mauser sights.
>>34943466
96/11s have a modified stock, you can see where they spliced on the semi pistol grip on them.
If it's one piece then it's a G11
>>34943351
I've heard you can use Swedish Mauser clips for the Type 38
is milsurp a poorfag option or not!?!
is there ANYTHING poor people can buy?
>>34943739
This cost me $175.
>>34943609
Nope. I check the milsurp rack every time i go in there. At most 2 rifles are this time it was that one and a hex 91/30 they wanted 300 for. All of the sporters have been there for ar least 4 months. Theyve got 3 krags that have been there for over a year.
While were talking about 38s any idea how i can pop this spring back up? I took everhthing apart and cant get to it from inside the stock. The retaining band is snug enough to stay in place while shooting but i can just slide it off by hand.
You need a bayonet for it, its hilarious how tall it becomes. Its one of my favorites for that alone. That one is in way better shape than mine. There some pitting on the exterior of the barrel near the muzzle and a hairline crack at the wrist on mine. Also its missing the cleaning rod, im sure thats going to be just as hard as finding a sling
>>34943572
No doubt it would be fun and if it was a different time id pick it up, most carbines just look silly to me.
>>34943739
The days I've milsurp being poorfag are far far behind us
>>34943733
Its not so much about it working as it is completing the collection you know? Type 38 is what im working on now but ive got a sling, bayonet, clip, and cleaning kit (oiler, rod/snake) for most of my milsurp. Its a bit autistic but whatever. As long as all the numbers on the rifle match and the accessories are period correct im content.
Talked to my dad today and he said his buddy got him a deal for "a 7mm Mauser and an M1 Garand" for $750 in total. I have no pics yet. Even if the two are sporterized beyond recognition is this something to look forward to?
It's some thing with a pawn shop, the guy he's buying it from is currently using it as an asset and if the pawn shop values just the Garand at about $400 then it oughtta be worth upwards of $1,000. Right? I'm not so interested in the Mauser but it's a package deal.
Y/N
>>34943815
Oh yeah I totally get that. I can't find any T38 clips, even on Japanese sites, except for one at $50. I'm guessing they melted them down after WWII.
>>34943739
ARs.
>>34943887
Thats a shame but it wouldnt surprise me. Il have to stay away when im drinking, last time i got shitfaced and looked at milsurp i bought a bayonet for close to 300.
I got a spear conversion kit for my M1 last week. I really need to figure out how to get better pictures.
>>34943720
I couldn't tell via mobile view. I have a 96/11 and was wondering.
>>34944055
You seem to know enough about Garands, answer my question papi
>>34943845
>>34943904
At least an AR is a damn good rifle, so it being a poorfag gun now really just means poorfags can have really capable rifles. Surplus was always hit or miss depending on a ton of factors.
>>34944083
Most people don't buy milsurp for performance. I sure don't. I buy them because they're interesting and I'm a history nerd.
>>34944117
I as well, at this point. When I was a teenager without internet I lived under the delusion I was buying old world super weapons, when in reality they're mostly about minute of pie plate at 100 yards guns.

Question: what are the names of all the wood types? All I'm familiar with is arctic birch, that finnish/russian stuff. When I'm speaking how do I distinguish between light and dark wood with the proper terminology? Is it just "light" and "dark?"
Examples:
>>34944186 light?
>>34944259 arctic birch
>>34944117 dark?
>>34944064 I don't even know but it's the exact same color as my swede
>>34943845
I would go for it only if the M1 is in good condition and unsporterized. Make sure the M1 isn't one of those rewelded receivers that were former drill rifles.
>>34944321
There were a lot of different woods used for milsurp stocks: walnut, beech, birch, elm, maple...some Asiatic woods I don't know well. All could have been stained differently or not at all, and the age along with the part of the tree the wood is from plays a role as well.
>>34943351
I paid $350 for my Russian one. I'd drop the same on a polish one no problem
>>34944144
Most people aren't even that good. Most of the time, it's the skill of the shooter more than what he is shooting, especially in terms of practical accuracy.
>>34944476
>>34944321
There is also a big difference in local varieties of wood when it comes to color. French Walnut is darker than Turkish walnut for example.

>>34945903
>Generally speaking, is it worth buying a new barrel and "refurbishing" milsurp?
I suppose it depends on what it is. I have a 1917 that headspaces poorly. AFAIK to fix that requires a rebarreling. So I've been considering putting a new barrel on it to make it a CMP vintage match competitor. But I'm also inclined to find an old barrel in good shape and have that put on.
Anyone know if the current barrel is junk or if ot can be reaseated to fix the headspace issues?

To elaborate on what the other anon said.
Bronze wool and some sort of penetrating oil works great. typically i use Hoppes 9 just to break up the grit and crud, then go back in with some kroil (or home made atf flavor)
The brass wool is also key. You can do it with steel wool sure, but you will leave many microscopic scratches on the steel (Which will invite rust). Bronze wool is uniquely suited for this job simply because it can't harm the steel, its not hard enough to ouch it, but the rust is soft and easily attackable by the bronze. You can crank unto the rust without any harm.

My walther p38 is bricked and I am sad. The rolling block pin came loose and would fall out, so I was going to take it to a gunsmith, and then my father asked to take a look at it, and then put it back together. So now I really have to take it to a gunsmith and who knows what it is going to cost.

Good deals are going to be at gun shows, pawn shops and ArmsList, but you're gonna have to look and probably haggle.

Look at them. Look for rust, look for pitted bores with no rifling (though a few guns don't have visible rifling even when new). Look for cracks in the stocks.

I go to gunshows and got to fingerfuck a few Enfields, saw a lot of SKS there etc, but felt i should do a bit more research before jumping on one. I've shot a few friends mausers, mosins etc, but still feel a bit cautious when buying used milsurp, don't want to get burned - we've all seen the gunshow/cabelas $500 Mosin pricing etc on here. I do browse armslist and even Classic, and GunsAmerica, GB etc, but a lot of the rifles i come across either seem to be questionable deals (Sweaty Ben doesn't list actual condition of guns etc, and some pieces are downright beat to shit like these Czech Mausers: http://www.gunbroker.com/item/686041035

I need to get into reloading, I'm probably going to ask for some reloading manuals and reference guides for my birthday.

>Reloading is inherently awesome but if it's meme tier reloading shit you cannot find anywhere in the world then you're stupid
Actually, I agree. Doesn't really apply to 577-450 Martini, though. Lee (and probably others) make dies for it.
What's a good price for an engineer carbine 1891 Argentine? I really love short nose cap carbines, and for some reason those single stack early mags make me feel funny things.
>>34946107
I bought a mas 36 at a gun show for 150 bucks. It was rebarreled to 308 at some point. After some work on the bolt it works pretty well, shoot an index card size group at 100yds.
>>34956183
The standard mas 36 shoots a .308 bullet anyway.
I recently purchased a Mauser 98K. I'm having problem with the bolt locking up after I fire a round. I had to use a rubber mallet to hammer the bolt.
What the heck is wrong with my rifle?
>>34945473

Only milsurp gun at the moment :/
Unless you count my M70
>>34956274
you fired and tried cycling but opening the bolt was a bitch? or you cycled and closing the bolt was a bitch?
>>34956318
Top cover is on wrong buddy.
>>34956393
I fired and I can't cycle the bolt without using a rubbing mallet.
>>34956025
This Lebel? I'm pretty sure Arisuke and I are the only Lebel owners in /k/.
>>34956467
This happens to me but on a smaller scale, after firing I'll have to lower it from my shoulder to cycle and this is maybe 1 out of every 10 shots. It's pretty annoying, sucks that you have an even worse case.
>>34956467
do you have trouble setting the safety at all? does dry firing have the same problem of cycling?

>>34956658
if you're having trouble setting the safety like it's ridiculously hard and a bolt cycling issue it may be that your Sear has been fucked with or been damaged.
once I replaced mine I could actually set the safety flag without using a screwdriver for leverage and could cycle the bolt easily.
Take it to a gunsmith to get a proper opinion but the way it sounds for both cases is that the Sear is not correct.
>>34956318
Your handguard is on backwards
Just picked up a Yugo captured K98. Camera sucks at night, so I won't bother with pics tonight.
Few questions:
I noticed it has 2 crossbolts. One is in the wrist. I haven't seen another with something like this. Anyone know anything about it?
It also has a small hairline crack in the tang that the seller didn't disclose, and that he covered with his hand when I asked for additional pictures. I took it anyway because I know cracks are kinda easy and cheap to fix, but also because it may already be arsenal repaired and I can't tell. I don't want to try and spread it without knowing and potentially make it worse. Any advice? Also what adhesive should I use if it needs additional repair? There is also a very very small crack on the back of the front crossbolt.
Should I even worry about the cracks, or just wait and see if they get worse?
>>34956057
that swede mauser looks atrocious
>>34956470
Cool! Could you give me some input on this Lebel? It's coming up at a (sort of) local auction. What do you reckon would be a fair price?
(pic 1/?)
>>34956889
It's not in perfect condition, as you can see.
(pic 2/?)
>>34956715
It's not ridiculously hard but it's much, much more difficult than other mausers I've handled. It's not something I can do unconsciously, which is a bad trait in a firearm.
>>34956882
No shit, wanna buy it for $300? I have it listed on armslist atm
>>34956897
Small repaired chip out of the stock, and a bit of rust on the buttplate (looks like the only rust on the gun).

>>34956900
I live in Canada and can get an unfucked one for about $270 if I shop around
I also had one and sold it because I hate sporter guns
>>34956543
No I don't have problems with working the safety, just the bolt is stuck. It's weird because when I work the action with and without a round in the chamber, the bolt feels like butter.
It's only when I actually fire the rifle do the bolt get stuck.

Looks like an RC to me. Russian Red finish on the stock, waffenampts still intact. Is it completely mismatched serial numbers? If so its 100% RC
And yes, that hurts the value. But not more than any other captured Mauser. At least the RCs still have the waffenampts.

What should I pay for a Syrian contract MAS 49 with an original scope?
>>34956290
>That Hakim made me hard
>Recently learned about them and I've become obsessed
No Hakim here, Anonalon. I have a Rasheed. Hakim is on my short list, however.
>>34955635
Russian-captured refurbs will have a dull dip-blue, electropencil force-matched serial numbers on the bolt and other parts, and a small "X" stamped on the receiver ring (usually the left side).
>>34955670
Sight hood wasn't introduced until 1939, so it's perfectly normal for your 1938 Mauser Werke to be "missing" it.
>>34955723
I see nothing on this rifle to indicated Russian use. If the serial numbers are stamped matching then I'd say it's legit.

Lebels are hard to price, but I'd say at least 1000. They can run anywhere from 650 to 1850, but most have been going around 1000+ lately.

1300ish. 700 for the gun, 600 for the scope.

Yeah Syrian ones weren't refurbished so they will have rougher furniture. They're more common here in the states as well, but between 650 and 850 is the standard price.

>>34959303

Apart from the manufacturing year what info can i get from a K98 and a Garand?
Also how to check if the parts are matching?
>>34959882
American rifles aren't serialized beyond the reciever.
>>34956031
Not for sale, sorry.
>>34956106
they sure do. I have a set of Lee 577/450 dies. I have to remove the mounting sleeve for them to fit in my press.
>>34946862
It was cut off and polished smooth. You can see wear the metal was polished by looking at the worn stamps.
>>34952068
I just found that taking apart a whole trigger group and putting it back together is a pain in the ass, but can by done. Whoever invented the spring hook is a genius.
>>34959882
For the Garand the only serial number is on the receiver. The barrel will be dated and there will be drawing numbers on some parts like the oprod. As long as dates and manufacturers are right it's matching. The stock will have a cartouche that's indictative of a certain serial number range or of a rebuild after WW2
I have to slaughter some milk jugs with this today.
>>34958443
Tbh, I think I want the scope on it more than I care about it being bubba'd.
>>34960606
why not put an actual Yugo style scope on it?
>>34960966
That's what it is. Zrak was a Yugo (now Serbian) optics company. The ON-76B would be both functional in a modern world and also historically "correct" if you want to call it that.
>>34961099
ON-M76B*
>>34957007
I'm going to do a complete bolt disassembly and clean the whole thing and test it again over the weekend. I really want this rifle to work because I can't believe just how nice and accurate it is. Never fired a milsurp, let alone a 98k before. Those iron sights are awesome.
As for the ammo, the only ones I could find locally are a few boxes of Mitchell's Mauser 8mm ammo. I know MM has a well deserved bad reputation, but I haven't heard bad things about the ammo they're selling so I figured I'd give them a try.
>>34961198
>Mitchell's Mauser 8mm ammo.
It used to be just re-branded PPU, which is fine stuff (if underpowered, like all SAAMI-spec "8mm Mauser").
>>34960511
I don't see any number on the oprod do i have to take it apart to see them?
Also when you say on the barrel you mean on this ring ? Because i see a SN on that but nothing on the visible barrel, do i have to take it apart for that too?
I can only see 3 markings without taking the gun apart. One on this ring, one on the receiver and one on the bolt.
Thanks for your help. I've been gifted a K98 and a Garand by someone who didn't want to keep them anymore and i'm trying to learn more about them.
>>34961287
IIRC on mine the marking on the barrel is under the oprod, so you have to pull the action back to see it. Not sure if that's normal.
>>34961351
Oh yeah i see some markings there, but it's pretty small and hard to read, wouldn't have seen them if you hadn't mentioned it.
Looks like a serie of numbers/letters like n-n-n-n-nn
There is a little P there too.
>>34959303
>What's a waffenampt? It's completely matching btw
Waffenampts are the proofs and acceptance stamps. But tbecause they're Nazis eagles most countries who captured then scrubbed them from the receivers
Check all the serial numbers anf see if any of them match. They all should match if the rifle has its original parts.
When Russia captured German weapons they stripped them to their component larts, cleaned, repaired and reassembled the rifles. But they didn't take care to put the rifles back together with its original parts, they just grabbed a bolt from the Bolt Barrel, and a magazine floor from the Magazine Floor Barrel, etc etc so they're all mis matched.

Sako 1944. Nice. That seller has some good Finnish mosins.
>>34961810
He was just an anon that came here asking questions why his mauser wouldn't work with stripper clips, and it was because it had been ground down to accept a scope mount.
He later sperged out when he was made to realize he had a bubba gun, and self destructed by calling all of us jealous and that his gun was better because it was in 7.62.

>>34963704
Spanish. The state arms factory formerly in Oviedo.
>>34956848
Alright, back from dissassembly. Someone has epoxy bedded this rifle. Were Yugo arsenals known to do that to reinforce a damaged stock?
>>34964060
The peculiar double crossbolt and hairline crack behind the forward crossbolt. Can't tell if it's been repaired or not. No gap visible.
>>34964070
And lastly the hairline tang crack. Given the other repairs, would it be safe to assume that the cracks have also been repaired?
>>34964060
I'm sure that's a bedding job done stateside.
>>34964114
I thought as much. Since the Yugos scrubbed the German markings I don't really care that much. I'm just concerned about the stability of the stock.
>>34964146
They usually do the extra cross bolt near the grip if the stock starts to break, I've seen it on Mosins as well.
So it's probably fine, maybe.
Only way to find out is to try and flex the stock near there to see if it moves, otherwise shoot it and see if it spreads.
>>34964213
I'm not taking it out of the stock again, so I can't really flex it enough to see. I'm sure its flexing a couple of thousandths and I see no expansion of the split. I guess We'll shoot it and see if it pops and impales me.
Can I get a price check?
