I don't have a .22lr yet, would the AR7 be a good choice for plinking/SHTF?
How picky is it for ammo?
Should I just get a 10/22 instead?
I have one and like it a lot. It *is* kind of picky with ammo - mine chokes on cheapie bulk Federal Automatch, but will eat CCI Mini-Mags all day without any problems. I just ordered an all-steel replacement barrel for mine off of AR-7.com, (https://www.ar-7.com/AR7-Barrel-Sporter.html), and I'm going to use that as my everyday plinking barrel so that the steel-lined plastic one that comes with the AR doesn't end up wearing out on me.
I think it's a great little gun at a reasonable price. As long as you plan to keep feeding it top-shelf ammo, I'd say that you can buy in confidence.

they have durability issues, im not sure you would want to use it as a plinker. but i guess they are cheap enough to replace. they are great shooters for what they are and could be an excellent choice for SHTF loadout because of their waterpoof and floating container, small storage space, etc. but they arent really designed to be shot a lot

is yours a recent henry made one ?
>>34939198
plinking no
stashing yes
very picky
if you just want to plink get something else the ar7 is more of a specialized novelty

>is yours a recent henry made one ?
Yup. I just bought it in June because I did an extended summer road trip that included time in cuck states where I couldn't bring my LCR. The AR fits neatly in an average-sized suitcase when stowed, I can bring hundreds of rounds of ammo along without overstuffing my bag, it's 50 state legal, and it's a lot of fun to shoot even for beginners. I took my mom shooting with it when I was visiting her - it was her first time going and she really enjoyed it.
My only complaint so far is that, when I was learning the hard way about it not liking Automatch, a jam put some nasty peening on the front face of the barrel (pic related). It shoots just fine even with the peening, but that's what made me decide to drop $70 bucks on an all-steel aftermarket barrel for it. Still, it should show you how much I genuinely like the AR that I spent $70 on aftermarket parts for a $250 rifle.

No, get a 10/22 and keep it disassembled if you are THAT DESPERATE for compactness.
>>34939385
ever disassembled a 10/22?
>>34939611
Takedown 10/22 even looks a lot easier to do than that AR7, especially with a bigger aftermarket.
>>34939714
>>34939714
a takedown is a different story,it looked like you were saying keep a regular 10/22 disassembled.
>>34939751
Even if he was it's really not that hard to assemble/disassemble a standard 10/22.
>>34939235
Will the replacement steel barrel fit inside the stock like the OEM one and will it still float?
>>34939794
Well, it's not a tool-less affair like the TD or AR-7
>>34940226
A regular 10/22 isn't that bad to disassemble, but you still need a couple tools and it's not likely to hold zero, unlike the TD and AR7.
>>34939611
It's literally one he's screw.
3 if you want to take the barrel down.
>>34940236
No, it's not difficult at all. The only part I ever have trouble with on occasion is getting the bolt out which wouldn't be necessary for taking it down.
It feels like a toy because the stock is so fat and hollow. I get that that's the point, but it's not aesthetic at all.
>>34940213
The company that makes it says it will, but I guess I'll find out for sure when it gets delivered on Monday.
>>34940236
Its like two hex nuts. And 10/22s are best with irons so your zero isn't going to change.
>>34941768
I hate the irons on the 10/22.
get a 10/22 takedown model with the magpul furniture
>>34940279
>>34940279
my pins are loose as fuck and everytime i take the barrel out everything falls out, fuck those little springs and bent wire thing.
>>34939198
Make way, superior SHTF .22 rifle coming through.
>>34943383
>s*ngle sh*t
I'm thinking about a 10/22 too OP. What attracts me is the huge aftermarket.
Might go for a bullpup stock on it myself.
>>34943383
Eww, didn't they make a version with two barrels though?
With one in 45LC/410 and the other in 22lr?
>>34941872
Why? They're accurate to 100 yards. I would like some peep sights, but more for that style than anything being wrong with them.
>>34943383
>having more rails than you have shots
>>34939198
AR7 is a stash gun for preppers who hope to never shoot it. It's a piece of crap compared to Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22, or Marlin Plinkster.
>>34939794
ah yes i see, quite right
subjectively best, bond used it
>>34945260
You're thinking of the Double Badger. It's similar though.
22lr/410ga or there are some 22mag options with 410ga or 20ga
>>34939198
>Not hunting down a semi-auto tube fed or a pump action .22 for good old fashioned American plinking with a chew of pic related in
>>34939198
>I don't have a .22lr yet, would the AR7 be a good choice for plinking/SHTF?
Not just "no" but "hell no" and I own three originals.
>>34947085
A bit harsh, but still truth. Most AR-7 owners seem to be choobs who want to hang "all the things"off of them.
>>34939714
>come back to /k/ after >1y
>see this
well shit, I thought the original 10/22td was already great.
>>34941768
>zero isn't going to change
I don't think that's true. My 10/22 front sight was a bit canted when I got it. I loosened those hex nuts, rotated it a bit, and tightened them down. There's no way to ensure it would always be tightened down in the same exact spot.
>>34939198
Mine is prone to light primer strikes. I don't know if that is a common problem however. Unless you want a backpack gun or something to keep under your car seat i would just get a 10/22.
My dad bought one last year after I tried telling that a 10/22 takedown would be better. I still think that, but it does shoot nice and fits perfectly in the back of his Jeep in a bag.
>>34947478
Yes, the originals and the Charter Arms ones weren't well made, but the modern Henry ones are fine.
