5.45's future is kinda iffy right now. The possibility of sanctions against Russian ammo companies means that the supply of ammo could dry up overnight since very few other countries make the round, much less in any significant commercial capacity.

If all you want is an AK-74, you can still find a used Bulgarian Arsenal SLR-104 on the secondhand market. Arsenal is currently not importing them to the US, but they're by far some of the best 5.45 AK-74 pattern rifles you'll find out there. Used VEPRs, Saigas, and SGL-31s (Arsenal-converted Saigas) are all also excellent but now carry a premium because they're considered "pre-ban."

Beyond that, the remaining options dwindle to used DDI and Waffen Werks builds of questionable quality, garbage Century M74s, and risky kit builds aside from those still being made by reputable builders, but those will generally be up in the same price range as the Arsenals anyway. Romanian SAR-2s and WASR-2s are decent guns you'll occasionally find out there as well, but not particularly common.

You'll also notice that literally everything I mentioned is used, because there are currently no new full-size AK-74s coming into the US at all. Be careful about whatever you end up buying and double check with us to make sure you're getting something decent before you pull the trigger.

To be fair, math is a perishable skill. I work in curriculum design and had to give myself an algebra refresher before writing for 7th and 8th grade because I just hadn't used that type of math since then.

The AK cleaning rod can be annoying to use due to its length. But with any cleaning rod just make sure that you have the rod centered in the bore when you push it in. Rubbing the rod against the crown is bad.

I was at Clemson in the totality. It didn't get noticeably dimmer outside until about 15 minutes before and after. But when the totality started it went dark within like 5 seconds. And then about 3 minutes later it got bright again over about a 5 second span. The partial eclipse was a totally different experience from the total eclipse. I live outside but near the band. I NEVER would have been able to tell there was an eclipse without glasses. Glancing at the sun was just too bright to make out the moon's crescent. But when the totality began, it was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. I am so glad I traveled for it. I thought I would be "good enough" at home. Not even close.

74 barrel parts are visually almost identical, only way to reliably tell them apart is the mold number format. IIRC Russian will be X-X whereas Bulgarian has no dash and might just be a single number or something.

They started dimpling in 1986 IIRC. Nothing else changed until 88 when the thread collar was manufactured as a different part than the front sight base. And it was pinned on instead of dimpled. But you can never see that detail because it's under the muzzle brake.

And then the 74M front sight base has obvious visual differences but the gas block and RSB stayed the same for a while.

If you're just trying to do a cheap and semi-accurate fixed wood stock build, just build around the 1983 spec. Most of the Bulgarian parts you'd find on an SLR-104 are either the same pattern or very similar to the point where only serious Kalashnisnobs would notice; barrel components are pinned too.
