.32 Clown Caliber more like. All you need for self defense is .22CB.

.380 is the lowest I'd go because it has the shortest gap between it and 9mm in "percentage of threats that failed to stop when hit" statistics published by the FBI. .32 Auto approaches .25ACP/.22LR uselessness at nearly 50% FTN while .380 is much, much closer to that of 9mm. It also has a significantly higher availability of modern defensive loads that will improve the ability of the cartridge to stop someone.

Considering it was designed from the start a self defense round and saw a shitload of military service in 1903s, 1903 derivatives and even a machine pistol, yes. And before somebody starts with the "modernized" .32auto kick again, we already have .32NAA as a basis for that and unless the projectiles catch up, making .32auto hotter is a gamble

Well I believe it is a little anemic and in cold weather it won't penetrate thick attire well.
That said, my summer carry piece right now is a Walther PP in .32ACP and let's be honest, a bullet is gonna hurt and even kill wether it is .22lr or .50AE.

Second World War, in Europe, effectively ended with a guy shooting himself with a .32 ACP.

32 ACP FMJ has reasonable penetration close to typical .380 so long as you use something with more barrel length than the tiny micro guns. Hotter European ammo helps too. It's major selling point for me is the very mild recoil. It's almost effortless to mag dump all 13 from my Beretta 81FS into the head of a silhouette target at 10 yards. A full size 9mm is better but for summer carry the 81 works well.
