It depends on what you are carrying. They are both excellent round as >>34928674 said. The argument usually comes down to capacity, but I've seen that subcompact carries are becoming more and more common, and you can end up having comparable magazine capacity between 9mm and .45

Using glock as an example, they have two subcompact models in 9mm and .45, and they are the same size besides the width. I am comparing the the single stack version of the .45 with the staggered 9mm, since you simply can't expect 10 rounds of .45 in a single stack magazine.
