Steve gives the NZ patrol ration a try, and it apparently has a very aggressive heating element.
You know, I never considered custard as a MRE feature, but it makes sense. It's protein, sugar, and fat, a very basic cocktail with high food-energy density.
And it tastes like dessert.
I remember in Japan I had a wonderful sort of savoury custard dish. Thinking back, it would make for a decent ration element. I've googled the dish, it's called "Chawanmushi". Image attached. Though the one I had was packed with delicious mushrooms.

Never had that before, would there be any ingredient in it that would prevent it from being an MRE ration?
I remember reading somewhere that a lot of fish-based foods wouldn't work because of how hard fish is to preserve (while having a pleasant taste)

There was a local place that recently went under that served something a but like that, they had some weird anglicized name for it though.

Its worth shit ever since judea started flooding the market with salt
Such a simple thing, just eating old MREs and talking about them, and yet I'm so entertained. I love how enthusiastic he is about the little stuff too, I can imagine some soldier whining about some of these MREs he eats and he's so stoked about it all it's hilarious, love this stuff!
