God, this was as cringeworthy as the fat dude in the Chinese-made combat shirt on that Discovery Channel prepper show that said he was going to be the "ultimate predator" once SHTF and then got arrested a few months later for molesting little girls. Some people take it to an unreasonable extreme, but having a shotgun and a shelf stacked with canned meats, bulk rice, beans, and water in your garage never hurt anyone. Growing my family was poor. We got 90% of our meat from hunting and the rest we got from people giving up pet pigs and other animals.

We raised chickens, hogs, turkeys. We rarely killed chickens because they provided eggs, and we would only kill one hog a year. we only had turkeys for a year but they were eaten by wild dogs.

during the summer we would go work for farmers and in return we would get to pick a about a months of produce. But it would be a like a month of corn or beans. We also had a small garden but it really coudnt support us.

we were never more than a month or so away from being out of food and money.

Shit was tuff, i got the tip my finger cut off in a door at school one day. Dad spent all the cash he had saved up to get it sewn back on by the doctor.

I felt so ashamed because he ended up getting one of tips of his fingers cut a few months later. He super glued it back on and acted like it wasnt shit.
