My point is, all I'm really concerned about right now is how this happened from an operational standpoint. Surface area increases slower than volume. It makes sense up to a certain point but afterwards the ship just can't compete with two smaller objects of equal total mass. This combined with advances in miniaturization of both systems and energy storage means that the same work can be achieved even more efficiently by the smaller objects.
>>
Meh. I see it as a big trend among all service members in all branches. Anyone with a semblance of competence, ambition or self-respect has abandoned the service as soon as they could. Our armed forces are a joke now, run by incompetents and filled the the desperate, delusion or destitute. I am honestly hoping we get our shit kicked in during the next real conflict so we can expose just how rotten we've gotten so it can be fixed.

There was probably about a dozen men on the cargo ship. Arleigh Burkes have 276 crew, according to a quick Wikipedia search. The Iowas had ~2,000.
It's not about ship size, it's about the population density. With a large cargo ship with a tiny crew, the crew's quarters can be isolated and tucked away. A tiny portion of an otherwise huge ship. With a Navy ship, you will have more crew space, which is typically placed in the sections that don't need to be protected as much. Usually on the sides and just through the hull side, with the vital combat and machinery spaces deeper within the ship.

>scared of being hurt

You should probably reconsider your considerations.

Even though >>34926418 is 100% the truth and the likelihood of you getting hurt doing something "cool" is virtually non-extant, the likelihood of you getting hurt doing some stupid shit is decent, the likelihood of getting hurt because of someone else's stupidity is >80%, and the likelihood of military "healthcare" leaving you disabled after a single enlistment is virtually 100%.

Are you going to seriously argue that gross tonnage right of way is not a practical reality on the south china sea?

Are you suffering from brain damage anon?
>>
>>34927878
>practical reality
Man did those goalposts move fast. Giving way to someone who can't give way does not change the right of way in any way or form. Will you deny this?
>>
>>34927885
What other set of rules are you suggesting exist in international waters?

You were the one that brought up right-of-way. I posted well known maritime guidelines. What is your counterargument?
>>

>What other set of rules are you suggesting exist in international waters?
Show me the international maritime regulations section or part that supports your statement with legal jurisdiction.
Something being practical reality does not make it law. Was either ship restricted in her ability to manuever, as per international definitions?
> I posted well known maritime guidelines.
Guidelines are not law. Right-of-way is a well-defined legislative term and you are mistaking it with practical reality and guidelines. Giving way willingly is not legal compulsion.
>What is your counterargument?
You are wrong. You made a rash judgement, making an obnoxiously pitiful "Wrong" post without any backing, then you moved the goalposts when challenged, shifting from talking about right-of-way to practical reality.
You are a fool.
>>
>>34927964
would you kindly produce your maritime legal guide of laws regulating the south china sea. I'd love to know what your source is for the shit you;re spewing.

Flight 1 Arleigh Burke, barely any significant upgrades since they were built.
Though Captain Bennett, second of his name, is probably shitting bricks right about now as JAG and the CNO turn their dread gazes upon him and his staff.

Right, in their legal framework it's called "Give Way" rather than Right of way, but it means the same thing.

Fitz still made it back to port under own power, though!
AND it wasn't rendered combat ineffective, it could still act as gun/missile platform if absolutely needed.

>>34928020
Now point me to the section that supports your statement.

And they do specify that Give way is given to vessels that cannot stop due to size or navigation constraints.

Read it yourself, I was able to find it in under a minute.

Essentially Gross Tonnage still wins.

these are the rules of he road that the united states uses https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/navrules/navrules.pdf

its based on the COLREGS and inland navigation rules, all deck watch officers are required to memorize these

So it doesn't support your argument, since you clearly were unable to find support for your statement. I'll end this here, since you clearly have nothing to stand on.
Good day.
>>
>>34928043
I love a good pedant. No one has right of way according to those regulations, I get that, but way is GIVEN to vessels in those rilex explicitly based on navigational constraints.

Yes, colregs has one ship give way in various scenarios, but no ship has the right of way in any sense. This is a basic tenet.

Hey man, it was the other guy that was acting like right of way was a thing in waters. I just posted te egross tonnage guideline, because it's correct basically all of the time, and there is no legal right of way.

all the officers who are cmdr/capt probably were in the same class at the academy, right? (just based on average time in service)
>>
>>34928085

The united states recognizes it, albeit there are acceptions, see >>34928039

for all of the US usage of nav rules, this is what the officers SHOULD have been doing in an ideal situation. Note that emergencies can cause a vessel to take priority

Admiral Halsey drove the 3rd Fleet into a typhoon in 1944. 3 destroyers sank and nearly 800 sailors died. Following a short court of inquiry, Halsey returned to the fleet. Three days later he then drove into a second typhoon killing 6 and destroying nearly 100 aircraft.

Could be worse.
