I know very little about guns except how to handle them, I'm just looking for something to have at my house for safety and possibly bring to the range.
Can't go wrong with a Mossberg shotgun, or a Ruger 10/22
.22 carbine with iron sights. Learn to shoot. 10/22 are ok, many would consider bolt or lever action to avoid a "spray and pray" tendency.

You need a rifle range or farmland you have access to, it's a bolt action, it's becoming expensive to buy and feed, and it's 15 feet long.
I'd get a cheap AK-15 or handgun that isn't a .40 and put a light on it for what you're using it for.

Maybe a few years ago. If you can find a decent one sub-$100, sure. But all the decent ones are pretty expensive these days and all the dirt cheap surplus ammo is dried up.
/k/ liked Mosins because they were cheap as fuck, good 'ol beater rifles that were cheap to feed. Sadly, that's not the case anymore, and there are much better options for the money on the market. If you really want a good bolt action surplus rifle, save your shekels for a Mauser instead. Despite what other anons are saying, a 10/22 won't teach you anything about recoil management. Entry-level ARs can be had from $400-$500 if you know where to look.
