My small arms chauvinism suffers since the French army bought the H&K416 and refused to examine the FAST project (improved 5.56 Galil). Worst : most of the production will be done in German factories.

Bolt-action rifle with a detachable box magazine, 18-22" barrel, of a common caliber in your location between 6.5mm and 8mm. The rifle should have iron sights mounted on the barrel. The length of pull should be shortened, probably to around 13". As for an optic, a low-powered variable optic would be best. Some of the Tikka T3x models fit the description, as does the CZ 550 Safari model and the Savage Model 11 Hog Hunter.

The optic should have quick-detach rings. Add a good shooting sling (Rhodesian, Ching, etc.) and you've got it. Don't bother with a bipod.

Still get a shotgun later if able. A double-barrel is surprisingly versatile for defense.

Are you going in Psychology or History, for planning on affording only one weapon in a decade ? It's not as if a gun is as expensive as an house.

Home defense is not in theory illegal, but there are no castle laws. You're supposed to respond with the "appropriate force" ; too many judges are dumb assholes and where i live, rotten cops protect white trash. They do not have guns, so i rely on my cudgels and other big sticks to protect my apartment.
