Well at lest he uses them, a lot of people don't like actually using $100+ knives for anything that would scratch them. I don't have a problem with that kind of collector, but I prefer to use mine to get a better sense of their design and for the utility of it.

It's a great knife, a little thick behind the edge, but nothing a bit of time on the stones can't sort out. Great action though, and solid ergonomics. It's one of only a few knives with "deep carry" clips that I still find easy to get out of my pocket.

I've had mine about 2 years now, it's held up well. Granted I rotate my knives a lot so it's only had a few months (if that) of pocket time.

Yep I'm that guy, pic related.

I would honestly not recommend the Talon blade shape. It's sexy, but it's just not that useful unless you are primarily stabbing stuff.

The flat ground ones are going to be far more useful for cutting tasks.

They are very nice knives, for LIGHT EDC (even the HD (heavy duty) variant like mine), if you can get over the price point. My Eagle is laminated ZPD-189, so the price tag (around $200 if I recall) was not too hard to swallow, but the $150ish for the AUS8a is hard for most people. I don't think it is a rip off, because they have a very good heat treat and they are for light edc.

Not OP, but I find the knife market is less about where to buy, but what to buy. Figure out what you want, figure out your price range, and watch/read reviews (handle if possible). Figure out what brands are good at making what you want.

After all that, it's easy as seeing what sites have them for the best price.

But my normal go to sites for more historical/collection/sword kind of stuff is Kult Of Athena, Amazon, and the SBG forums.

For more practical/edc/innawoods stuff I check BladeHQ, Cutlery Shoppe, Amazon, and sometimes KnivesShipFree and Knife Center.
>>

Amazon and bladehq, most of the shit on true swords is pretty trash.

That's been discontinued for years. Even used you might get some decent money out of it if you were to sell it.

Benchmade skirmish full-size. Bought used for 165. I could flip it but it's just such a fun knife to use. Has such a sexy click when the lock activates. Shits on the reeve audibly.

Maybe consider a 3,000-6,000 and then a 10k to 13k ish.

I'm still working on my water stone/free hand stuff. There are a few others here on /k from time to time that know their free hand stuff much better than me.

Have you taken any thought into what brands you like, and any sort of lapping equipment.

Currently my favorite water stone is a Naniwa Chosera 400... But I've been told it may not be the best for very hard, large carbide, vanadium rich steels. And I use a DMT Extra Course diamond plate for lapping.

why in the fuck would anyone counterfeit that knife lmfao, its dirt cheap as it is
>>
>>34929971
Because that's a small utilitarian knife that likely won't see much impact and makers of such things tend to lean towards nicer stainless steels because they'll yield more tangible benefits. The knife in your pic is apparently made from something similar to D2 but frankly I doubt most users would notice a difference between D2 and 1095 in a knife that size. Users who do notice a difference will simply appreciate sharpening their knives less.

Not to say you shouldn't throw money at good steel but if you're going for carbon steel you should go for a design that showcases its strengths.

Like Nakiris, Usubas, various bunkas, certain Santoku styles, some petty and paring knives, cleavers and Chinese chefs knives. Yes most kitchen knives have a slight curvature but not all of them

Now how a pure wharncliff works as a kitchen knife is gonna depend a lot on the handle. You just have to cut a little differently
>>
>>34930689
I guess it comes down to wanting a 3.75"~4" cutting edge with a bit of a finger guard. Been looking at fiddleback forge and WT Wright stuff, but so many have minimal guards and sleek handles. Maybe my fear of slippery handle + barely any pronounced choil/guard is a bit too exaggerated? I was interested in the Bradford Guardians, but there were a lot of people stating that they got cut a little bit because that knife has a short handle and the index finger rides on the choil.

you should get one of those lansky knife sharpening guide kits, they make sharpening easy. you could always just get a stone but free hand sharpening is always a little daunting for your first time, especially on such a nice knife

I want to learn how to properly sharpen knives, and my mcusta's edge is absolutely ruined anyway. So it might actually be a good way to practice.
I think I'll go for the stone, but I wonder which "grit" I must choose.

you need a variety of grits, especially if your knife is a dull as u say. you need to start at something low such as 400/600 and work your way up to around 1500 or higher depending if u want to get anal about it. personally i use 800 - 1000 - 1500 when i resharpen as 1500 gets my knives sharp enough to cut paper and shave hair, dont need it to be stupidly sharp.

Watching how the Lansky stones interact with the blade could give you insight into sharpening, just saiyan,

I'd like to buy only one stone if possible, but I saw they have a different grit on each side. Maybe I'll start with a small grit and see if that's enough.

Yes. Wicked Edge is an upgrade if you've got the money.

So was your issue specifically with the cleaver or what?

Just the kind of autist to block a serial number on a knife

It looks like an Aitor knife, they made various "jungle survival" knives that have that sheath that can be used as sling shot and the blade shape also reminds me of Aitor knives.

Kershaw Leek? I have one I use for edc and it's an okay knife. I find if I put a really sharp edge on it, it gets pretty brittle; it seems to get small chips in the edge and I'm not overtasking the knife to where that should happen.

Kershaw Leek yeah, noted ty

Always liked the look of the leek but am not a fan of spring assist knives, plus when i handled one it didnt seem to have too good of an action so i feel that if i remove the spring it wouldnt be all too good

kind of a meme knife, but i have one too. don't really like it for EDC. i took out the safety and put a lanyard on it.

If we're strictly talking waterstones:
First get a 200-400 grit for actually getting a cutting edge, they will cut fast and are your foundation.
Then you can pretty much be good with a 3000~ grit stone to finish.
If you want to take the blade further, you get a 6000-8000 and beyond that, you're looking at $100+ per 10k stones that put mirror polish.
And if you have a fine grained leather belt, you can apply some jewel compound and strop the finished blade for the finishing touch. You can also use the strop if your knife dulls a little between use, as a touch up until it loses its edge.

As for technique, you either do some triangle maths and find the angle you will hold the blade or get a reference angle guide tool/wedge. And then you pretty much just practice practice practice.
Use a cheap kitchen knife if you're too afraid to use your premium knife.

Its really about consistency.
