Nogunz here, going to buy my first rifle and I have no fucking clue what to get.

I was in Boy Scouts and worked at a Scout Camp helping the gun range dude for quite a while, so I'm a good shot and know about guns. We only ever used bolt-action .22s though. I want to get a bolt-action but I don't know what kind. I go hiking a lot and want something that'll be good against mountain lions/gators/methheads. I don't usually have a problem with animals since I know how to avoid them and avoid getting in trouble with them. I'd rather have a gun just in case though.

Tl;dr: What kind of rifle should I get? Nugget?
>>
>>34914277
Spanish/Yugo Mausers are a good alternative to Mosins.

Modern-times, maybe a Howa 1500. Many calibers to choose from.
>>
>>34914277
.308 Enfield.
>>
>>34914277
savage axis is like $280. go nuts.
>>
>>34914330
This. It's accurate, cheap, and comes in a wide variety of calibers.
>>
>>34914277
How much you looking to spend and do you want milsurp or modern?

As >>34914309 said, plenty of surplus Mausers out there or an enfield if yuou want to go that route, I would personally avoid Mosins especially if your looking for a hiking rifle.

Modern Rifles I concur with Howa and Savage Arms are another good choice that isn't too pricey. I would make sure I get one with the accutrigure though, those things are nice of the ones I used.
>>
I highly recommend you consider a Ruger brand Gunsite(TM) Scout rifle
It's lightweight, short and great for taking on long hikes and even hunting trips
There aren't a lot of things that will kill a nigga deader than .308 WIN
take it from me, it's the first and only gun i've ever bought
>>
>>34914556
That image is incorrect. The GSC has a 16-18" barrel. Its nice and actually lighter/smaller than it looks in pictures but very expensive for what it is. Regardless, i will get one when i save up enough shekels.
>>
If you live in WA ill sell you my Savage Axis.
>>
Not OP.
What if never even been to a range before?
Central Florida so I have options, what kind of safety courses/instruction or whatnot should I expect to be required to take?
>>
>>34914277
Pre 64 Winchester model 70 in 30-06
>>
>>34914277
DO NOT GET A NUGGET

get a practical hunting rifle in a normal caliber
>>
>>34914277
First bolt gun that you'll always keep and actually practice with? CZ 455 22lr.

First bolt gun that you want for serious use (possibly to shoot predators of 4 or 2 legged variety) anything in .308 will work well, personally I would recommend what this anon (>>34914556) said, gunsite rifle is great.
>>
>>34914277
>>34914309
The days when it was worthwhile to buy milsurp just to get a cheap shooter are long gone. Milsurp is for collectors only now - buy one if you love the history of them, but otherwise don't bother. As >>34915857 said, get a new-build hunting rifle in a common caliber. In the end, You'll be happier with it.
>>
>>34914339
Which caliber is cheap and good for a beginner? 223? 30-06?
>>
>>34914277
>First rifle
>Already have basic marksmanship down
>Bolt action

Literally anything in .223. Ammunition is cheap, shoots flat as fuck, low recoil, can remove antler. I still strongly suggest getting a .22 for more practice and/or pests.
>>
Not op but I'm considering a lever action for my first rifle. Ideally I'd like to get one used, and in either .30-06 or .30-30 or .308 an for as low of a price as I can while having wood furniture. What would y'all recommend?
>>
>>34916865
Look at CZ527 fires 7.62x39, one of the cheapest and cost effective rounds available with a mild recoil. Also great for deer and HD.
>>
>>34916865
8mm mauser

Yugo M48s are improved Kar98ks, and 8mm pwns pretty much everything
>>
>>34914277
get a NEW winchester m70 in 308 with a 20in barrel.

Action is butter smooth, trigger is pretty damn perfect, machining is flawless, stock and fit are beautiful, and the barrel is short enough that its compact while also capable of hitting out to 1200yds with good ammo and optics if you ever end up wanting to.
>>
>>34916865
223 for target practice, 308 if you want to go hunting with it.
>>
>>34916882

this

>>34916904
>>
>>34916928
How much do they usually run and why get new vs used? Also is Henry or Marlin any good?
>>
>>34914277
You might wanna gear up for the storm brewin
>>
>>34916903
How's 2006 treating you?

Surplus ammunition has been steadily drying up for years, and going forward no milsurp caliber is going to be as cheap as a common hunting round.
>>
>>34914556
>>34914786
>>34916377
I'm actually also about to get the GSR in walnut stock, but it only comes with a 16.5 inch barrel, is that viable for a 308? I really like the walnut and stainless look

lol

been hearing that one for the last 30 years...
>>
>>34916945
i got mine for under 800, but thats from bass pro so i paid top end.

If you were to get one its worth the money. I recently converted mine into a modern version of the ones used by the usmc in vietnam. I put on a high end 10x fixed power scope with a sunshade, montana rifle sling, featherweight barrel, and of course in 30-06.

Henry, if I were to get one it would be one of those long rangers in 308 with the iron sights. Although they are very expensive.

Marlin, based off my 2 year old 1895 CBA in 45/70, its good to go. Mine is an 18.5in octagon barrel, so its nice and compact.
>>
>savage axis
>>34916892
>>34916903

Those aren't really options. I guess it's sort of a toss up between 223 or 243 if I want to use it for hunting.
>>
>>34917012
I was at Cabela's today finger fucking funs and they had a large number of Marlins for sale, all around 390-500. I couldn't tell if it was a deal or not but they where dang good looking. What's the benefit of the octagon barrel, they had a few of them?
>>
>>34916978
get the 18 inch if you are recoil shy, and also want to hunt with it. The 16in is fine because its compact and light, but its loud as fuck. So if youre hunting without hearing protection, youre gonna fuck up youre hearing. UNLESS youre putting a suppressor on it, then 16 inch is fine. Also if you plan to ever shoot out past 700, 18 inch will get you there more effectively.
>>
>>34917033
Octagon barrels just look sexier.

Marlins are decently priced, depending on what caliber youre trying to shoot. The 1895s are a bit more expensive around the 6-800 mark depending on the model. If youre not looking for a 45/70, then spend the extra money for a winchester 92(if going 357 or 44), or a win 94 if going 30-30. The new ones actually look nice, and I like the top safeties on winchesters vs side push buttons on marlins.
>>
>>34917064
Noted. I just bought a Glawk brand glawk so it will be a little while before I get a rifle, but I might pick up a .22 in the mean time for poking holes in paper
>>
>>34915842
wtf, you can still get these for less than $1500. I posted this satirically and then checked prices. I know what someone is getting himself for Christmas.
>>
>>34917088
Dont bother with the 22. Use that money for ammo or optics for future rifle.

If you are set on getting a 22, I suggest building your own 10/22, so that at least it will be something good enough to shoot quarter size groups out to 100yds.

If youre not gonna go custom, I recommend getting a takedown model and purchasing a magpul backpacker stock.
>>
How about a Ruger Scout in 223? Comes with iron sights, low recoil, cheap ammo, and could use for hunting. It's on the upper end of what I would want to spend though.
>>
>>34917139
What about something like this for practicing with irons at the range? Can be used in the pistol section at 20 yards all day long

Mosin is honestly an incredibly cheap, accurate, and well made gun to start off with, if you're going with bolt actions. Old soviet surplus has made them about as abundant as AKs.
>>
Also mausers are a great option... My first rifle was an old mauser from Germany, dated 1938.... shot as fine as any other rifle I've had the pleasure of firing.
>>
>>34917160
I mean, its a 22 rifle lol. It will shoot. I was just recommending a 10/22 build because 22 rifles get boring, and having a really good one will always keep your interest in shooting one.
>>
>>34917178
>Mosin is honestly an incredibly cheap
How's 2006 treating you? Hey, do me a favor and get in touch with 11-year-ago me and tell him to buy Bitcoins.
>accurate
The "garbage rod" slander is stupid and incorrect, but calling the Mosin "incredibly accurate" is just as wrong in the other direction.
>and well made gun to start off with, if you're going with bolt actions.
See above.
>Old soviet surplus has made them about as abundant as AKs.
Again, welcome to the current decade. Cheap Mosins dried up years ago, and aren't ever coming back.
>>

>Also mausers are a great option... My first rifle was an old mauser from Germany, dated 1938.... shot as fine as any other rifle I've had the pleasure of firing.
When did you buy it - 1965? Milsurp was cheap and plentiful years ago, but we're in the Current Year +2.

What is this picture trying to convey? That the Gunsite Scout is a better value than the M1A?
>>
>>34916865
.223 for two-legged threats

.30-06 for four-legged threats.
>>
>>34917641
I just read an article yesterday about a British hunter in India in the 40s would use a 30-06 model 70 instead of double rifles to kill 500+ lb tigers. He said a well placed 220 grain soft point high in the shoulder would break both shoulder blades and sever the spine.
>>
>>34916904
I seriously doubt a .308 with a 20" barrel will take you out to 1200 well. Unless you work up some above max loads with some expensive as fuck VLDs you're going transonic at 1000 or less.
>>
>>34919442
you can shoot out to 1200yds with factory 178gr match ammo with a 20in with reasonable accuracy. Most high end rifles such as the tac ops brand rifles are built with 18-20inch barrels that get you .25 moa accuracy. .25 at 1200 yds is 3 feet. Thats enough to hit man sized targets at 1200.

I got a finnish m39 sako that was pretty beautiful
