Recommendations for an inexpensive personal carry firearm

So I was recently harassed in a parking lot by a cholo. I own an AR-15 and have done a fair amount of customization on it, but I am painfully lacking on a personal protection firearm.

I hadn't acquired a sidearm mostly because I lived in an anti-gun area, where getting a handgun permit was quite painful. However I have just recently moved to Texas, so a handgun is pretty much only showing my ID to a cashier away.

Any recomendations for a personal carry firearm that is fairly inexpensive? Ease of maintenance a plus, but not strictly necessary, I know my way around a cleaning kit, weapon disassembly, and reassembly.
>>
>>34911155
you just posted it in your picture :o
>>
>>34911168
1911s are inexpensive?

All the ones I've seen have been like 700-1000$.

What branding do you recommend then?
>>
>>34911182
oh, sorry no

a glock would fit a lot of your things but isn't super cheap, how much are you willing to spend?
>>
>>34911182

glock 19 for thick gun carry, but I'd recommend a single stack wonder 9 for summer, little clothing carry.

something like a kahr, a smith shield, maybe even a glock 36 whatever.

what's your budget? how does your state do carry?
>>
>>34911182

You can get Rock Island Arsenal 1911's for $400. Basic, entry-level pistols, but they still kill critturs dead.
>>
Jimenez JA25
>>
>>34911188

I actually rather dislike glocks, double stack pistols don't tend to be particularly comfy for me.

Maybe up to 500 if it's the right gun.
>>
>>34911208

a full size 1911 isn't the worst to carry, but it will be too large to carry in summer clothing. it has muh 45 and a thin profile going for it.

most of them don't play nice with jhp self defense rounds, the few old guys I know that carry a 1911 carry it with fmj.
>>
>>34911207

Texas recently began to allow open carry. My budget is tight as fuck, but I'm willing to burn some credit to get a good carry gun.

Texas recently started to allow open carry, but I plan on getting my CHL in the near future.

>>34911208
I love 1911s, so that sounds almost perfect.

>>34911210
I'll take a look at that.
>>
>>34911213

what kind of weather do you live in? it actually does matter
>>
>>34911240
Hot and humid sadly.
>>
>>34911213
There are plenty of entry level 1911's in the $500 range, RIA, Armscor, used Taurus, etc. And they'll be alright. I suggest something a little more smaller for anfirst carry gun though. You're best off being able to carry daily.

I'd personally recommend any of the nice single stack sub-compact 9's on the market.

Pf9s are good, cheap, work well. I owned. one and loved it, gave it to my dad for his CCW.

LC9s, s&w shield, kahrs cw/cm series, Taurus slim, s&w or Ruger small-framed snub nosed revolvers... All good options. All between $250-$450
>>
>>34911257
That sounds quite reasonable.

I agree the only issue I have with subcompacts, is I hate the feeling of not having all my fingers on the grip.
>>
>>34911245

I carry a 1911 quite often, but it gets to 110 where I live and humid. 1911 doesn't like it, clothing don't like it, rust is an issue. So I carry it in the winter mostly.

I carry a stainless kahr mk9 in the summer. thin, single stack gun with a small profile that hides easily under a t shirt or in pocket. might be too pricey, but they make a poly framed one for cheap. GARBAGE trigger imo on the cw9.

id suggest the shield, or a similar sized gun. Get a poly frame for ease of care AND low weight. lugging around 2 lbs of steel feels manly and all, but if it keeps you from carrying 24/7 then no. don't go too cheap, and make sure you get a decent holster. aliengear makes a decent starter holster for like 40 bucks.
>>
>>34911275
A lot of those subcompacts have more grip space than you would think. My honest advice would involve going to a gun store and just fingerfucking all the choclices that interest you. If you can, pick a store with a rental range to try them out. My lgs allows $5 test rentals guns you're looking to buy.
>>
>>34911282
That sounds good. I'm glad you mentioned that, I'm personally very partial to polymer frames, because lighter, easier to control.

I don't really care about feeling manly from the weight of the gun. Steel has it's perks, but I like the faster draw of polymers.

>>34911304
Sort of my plan, but I'm trying to establish a direction for when I get there. I've started to look around a little locally, and I'll see what I can find.

Hopefully I can find a place with a test range so I can try before I buy.

the one that I'm looking at is a chiappa rhino chambered in Luger 9mm and .357MAG pic related
>>
The LCP/LC9, Shield, Kahr CW/M series would all be good options.

If you want to carry it you want to get something small and comfortable to carry so that you actually carry it all the time.

Also invest in a good holster and belt. A lot of people overlook how big of a difference a really good belt can make. I made due for years with a cheap belt before getting a good Beltman belt and the difference is night and day.
>>
>>34911317
>Steel has it's perks, but I like the faster draw of polymers

This ain't call of duty kiddo
>>
>>34911352
I hope this is a joke because that's a very stupid choice for CC.

It's heavy, pricey, will be tough to get good holsters for, and has no real benefit over a smaller .357 revolver that's actually designed for concealed carry.
>>
>>34911359
Well I mean if I want to beat someone senseless with it, sure steel is great. Not that I would.

However, you have to admit there's a difference in draw speed because of weight.

it's light as hell and pic related is a damn good holster and it has little kick back.

>So I was recently harassed in a parking lot by a cholo.

so? did he hurt your feelings or something? that's totally enough reason to shoot him, for sure, right?

neck yourself, cretin.
>>
>>34911317

honestly family you are asking all the right questions, find a good gun shop with a range and if they are decent behind the counter they will point you in the right direction. also from what you've said I'll again recommend the shield. thin, poly frame, an okay trigger, extendo mags for full grip, decent after market and easy manual of arms. I'm not a huge fan of Springfield, but they have a small compact gun that might tickle your fancy as well. finger fuck as many as you can before buying.

but again you seem to have your shit together, a good gun shop will get you where you need to be. gl out there, and remember these words.

having the gun in the first place is the Ace. Shot placement is King. caliber is queen. everything else is jacks.
>>
>>34911384
>neck yourself, cretin
you first
>>
>>34911155
Just take the AR-15 with you, much easier and cheaper.
>>
>>34911384

>He hurt your feelings.

No he threatened me with a gun in front of my wife. Sure I could fight him, I had a knife in the pocket, but between him with a gun, and me with a knife, he could be faster on the draw. Having a gun could have evened the situation, but I also have to take the chance that my wife could be collateral. Ultimately, I de-escalated the situation, everyone escaped unharmed, but it did tell me I needed to pick up a little something to even any future situations out.

>>34911395
Thanks for the solid recommendations, I'll keep in mind about that. Also about a good belt and holster combo.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Makarovs are still 275 on classic get one clean it up and now you have a nice little carry gun

This one. G43 is great. Light, Glock reliable, good ergos. Can get pinkie extensions for the mags or even extended baseplates that do the same thing from Taran Tactical or others. Pictured is my G43 with the TT +2 baseplate.

>glock reliabe
A group of 5 cholos surround you. I would choose a glock. Cholos do not expect a white collar worker to carry a hand grenade.

For reference on size. I wear XL gloves and it fits my hand quite nicely.
>>
>>34914110
Sure Glocks have an unsupported chamber. Sure, they've had cases of ruptures. Almost 100% attributable to hand reloads that are too hot or +P+ ammo though. Solution? Stay within guidelines for reloading. Or shoot factory ammo.
>>
>>34911424
If you're in El Paso I can recommend a great LGS

And my daily carry is a subcompact shield in 9. The capacity is the biggest drawback for me.
>>
>>34914284
Totally new to the Texas Area, but I live in the DFW metroplex.

I went around looking and I may have found the one.

A remington R51 sub compact. It felt perfect, had the right grip size. I just need to find a place where I can demo one before I buy.
>>
M&p shield with the extended mag sounds like the gun for you

Or maybe a kahr

Addendum, It's a gen 2, so it should avoid the issues the previous gen had. I did look up what I could about it online. Pic related.
>>
>>34914427
The shield wasn't as comfortable as the R51 I looked at this afternoon, but it was more comfortable than the XDM.

Unfortunately what I read about it says it's a bit of a bitch to field strip and clean, but if it shoots well I think I'm pretty much sold.

Ok, Fill me in here. I read the Gen 1s had a lot of trouble, but the Gen 2 is pretty much clear on that.

What's the issue here?
>>
>>34911317
where in Texas? here in San Antonio, most gun ranges have a cheap enough rental fee. The Bullet Hole on the Northwest side (just outside of town) has a decent outdoor range, but there are plenty of indoor ranges with handgun, archery, and long rifle ranges. I haven't been there yet, but I'm almost positive Camp Bullis has a recreational gun range open to the public, but I've read conflicting shit about that online

Springfield XDS or XD Mod2. Subcompact pistol chambered in 9 or 45. Inexpensive and reliable, any sane person should own one.
>>
PPS m2 Is my choice for single stack 9mm. 100 dollar rebate makes then a pretty nice choice right now, provided the store you buy from have them at a reasonable price.
>>
>>34911155
Glock 26 or the single stack

The 26 isn't much bigger, been my ccw for 6 years and really, I don't think it can be beat for all it can do.
>>
>>34914529
I'm in the DFW area.

>>34914540
I'll see if I can look at an XDS, not crazy about the XDM though.

>>34914541
I'll see about looking at a PPS m2.

>>34914543
Never been a fan of glocks, though a single stack might make a difference, double stack pistols tend to be uncomfortable. I kinda pick by what feels good in the hand, and hopefully from there to shoot as well.

I need to hit a firing range and try out a few of these so I can make a better decision.
>>
>>34914562
oh. idk much about the DFW, sorry
>>
>>34914562
Springfield guy here again. If you buy an XD now they have a promotion where you send them a scan of your receipt and you get a free holster, 2 small mags and 2 extended mags (the mags are like $35 each in value) [for free]
>>
>>34914540
my dad has an XDS 9mm. It's not bad for CC, desu. I tested it next to a glock 17 9mm and the glock was clearly better, but considering the CC ability, it was comparable
>>
>>34914562
>Never been a fan of glocks
if it's because you have small hands, no shame in it, then you may well like the single one. You can really get your hands around it.
>>
>>34914563
That's fair, but thanks for the options in the San Antonio area.

>>34914580
Yeah, just about everyone has a rebate option, but that promotion might be really good. Maybe I'll check an XDS and see how that feels. Hard to beat that value.

>>34914595
I do admit, I have small hands. I don't really care that much about it, but it does curtail my choices in handgun at times.

I'm going to give that a look for sure. There's a seller nearby that has one in stock. Gotta check it out on Monday.

If I can find one nearby to feel, might give it a look. Otherwise, I'll consider it after I've found my carry gun.

I don't knock old soviet guns, they are tough as nails guns, I just don't want something that I can't verify the feel before deciding it's my carry gun.

After babbys first carry gun, I'm more open to looking at other things.
