Don't tell me you just swipe a credit card in exchange for estrogen-filled overpriced garbage from an animal that spent its life ankle deep in shit. Why would you feel the need to separate yourself from where your food comes from. Even fat old fudds waddle themselves out into the woods once a year to fill their freezers with top quality meat. What's your excuse?

If you're capable of hunting and you don't, you're a numale faggot. And if you're somehow opposed to hunting you're a legit retarded waste of oxygen and you need to remove yourself from the gene pool immediately.

Anyway, all that aside, who here hunts? Anything interesting going on?

I don't hunt because I live in Texas and I don't know anyone that has land, not to mention I'm a poorfag

Reasonable. Only only 0.4% of huntable land in Texas is public access.

I shot a moose 3 years ago in September, and I still have a little meat left from it. Not for much longer though, I'm going to have to go out for something else soon.

I still buy chicken and pork, just not beef.
>>
>>34908528
>just not beef.
Why?

Ribeye is good as fuck
>>
>>34908538

Because the moose gave me all the red meat I needed for years.

I'll be buying it again when I run out until I get some more game.

Just waiting for November. I hunt whitetails but it might be my last year for awhile as my grandmas farm where I hunt is being put up for sale. I've talked to her and she and a few of my aunts and uncles don't want really want to sell.

But a few of her dipshit city dwelling kids are really pressing her. I seriously think they want her to do this so the inheritance will be cash but thats a different discussion. I'd buy it myself as I grew up there but I don't have a cool half mill or so sitting around.

We can, just has to be straightwall. .30-30 MAY be approved in the future, it was one of the top requests to the DNR. Since the hunter population is going down, i imagine it will pass within 5 years.

>>34910036
We hit them with cars.

Joking aside, deer are much more common in east ohio, which is Appalachia and forest and amish people. The amish are big blackpowder hunters. Every year OH bags some 700,000 deer (or maybe it's 200,000 deer out of 700,000 population, cant remember). Never seems enough though.

It also varies a lot by county. East of Columbus, some counties have bag limits of like 4,5, or 6 durr. For my county it's only 2 durr because we like to give the highway department something to do when they scrape them off i675 and i70.

Google maps says you're 2 hours away. I'm in Waupaca county.

As much as I love my fellow anons, probably no invite. My advice is take a hunters course. You might think "oh that's for 12 year olds".

It's not. Shooting the deer is easy, you gotta field dress it (gut it) after the kill. It's not for the squemish.

And Wisconsin has almost more public hunting ground than I'd bet any other state, or we or on par with the best.

Take the hunters safety course so you know what to do when you actually kill one. The guy teaching will know exactly where you should go. And you might even meet a guy who will be willing to invite you to his hunting group. It gets a little boring after years and years and some of the fun comes from teaching beginners. And yes, we will make you bight the heart.

Shieet, that is pretty far away.

Thanks for the intentions anyway, I'm sure it would have been fun. I took a hunter safety course probably a decade ago, and when I went pheasant hunting I had to dress the bird myself. The similarities between pheasant and deer are probably slim though.

>And yes, we will make you bight the heart

>>
>>34910183
West OH has a pretty dense populace. Cincy-Dayton-Cbus is pretty much an infinite suburban sprawl. To the north, Toledo to Cleveland is pretty much the same. SE Ohio just has Athens and Chillicothe, which are essentially villages in comparison. Accidents happen too, iirc a freak accident happened a few years back where a guy ND'd and the round flew like a mile away and hit some amish girl in the head.

tl;dr, Ohio has a weird population distribution, and a good chunk of hunting land is next to suburbs or close enough that city people complain.

Speaking of all the OH hunters who seem to be active in this thread anyone willing to show a new guy the ropes? I'm mostly just interested in the field dressing aspect of things since the gear and strategy aspects are all things you can read about (and are situational anyways). I actually did a field dressing class at a local farm but we did a goat and it was me and like 10 other people. Not a lot of hands on time.

> And I mean fucking wilderness, Corsica is almost a fucking jungle, once you enter the forest deep enough
> Anyway
> My Grandad and his brother used to go hunting on sundays

> Get handed a 12ga, loaded with brenneke
> Rusty ass piece of shotgun, no shoulder pad, side by side darn rifle
> Will do
> Climb in the mountains for half an hour, before reaching the spot
> Get told to sit in the middle of a brush, probably to keep me away from trouble, and boars
> My Granduncle go sit a bit further away, and my Grandad even farther
> Wait
> Get bored
> But been told not to move, take a piss, or whatever, so don't, so they don't think i'm a jerk
> My only experience with firearms at the time was with a .22lr.
> Ohwell.jpg
> 2 hours later, seriously bored, but still wainting
> Suddenly hear rummage in the bush on my six
> Turn my head, only to see a furious piece of boar running towards me
> Or was he fleeing?
> He didn't gave a single shit about me
> Took two shot at it, barely aiming
> Almost severed one of his limbs, and sent the other shot in his shoulder
> Meatruined/10
> Hear cursing
> Loud, loud cursing
> My grandad shows up, really pissed, but apparently, not at me
> Few seconds later, my Uncle shows up, laughing his ass out
> Turns out my uncle was as bored as I, so he started to treat himself with a piece of cheese while waiting
> The man is the closest thing you can find approaching a giant
> So after his full cheese was eaten he let loose a huge fart
> Turns out the fart scared the boar, that was until then going to the direction of my grampa
> Mfw my first kill was thanks to a fart
> Mfw I understood why the boar was scared shitless

considering people did it for thousands of years with bows and then shitty (compared to modern guns) flintlock muskets, any centerfire rifle is more than enough to do the job.

>>
>>34914091
meat (muscle) im okay with. Organs and shit, not so much. Cutting it open and having that all spill out? Probably going to go somewhere to puke and convulse.

Why? I am a city kid and I didn't grow up with this stuff. Confronting it as an adult is disturbing. I know I am buit roughly the same as the animal. I know as easy as it was to pull the trigger on the animal, it is just as easy to pull the trigger on me. I know I am not exempt from the dance and pain it goes through as it dies, in fact I am watching a preview of something I will go through in some form. I know I can be cut open as easily as it is cut open. I know I can be skinned, prepped and butchered as easy as it is.

If I find out how easy it all is I have to confont my own mortality, and fragility. I have to accept that I am exempt from none of this, a knife will cut me open as easy as it cuts open a durr. It scares the hell out of me and I am happy right now not knowing first hand just how easy it is.

Seals and seabirds. Gonna try to get a goose if my brother will lend me his shotgun, or I'll get one myself and try next year.
Gonna go fox hunting with some fellers further inland who said they'd show me the ropes. I'm hoping to get to hunt some moose together with this other guy in October, and I'm on the fence about whether I want an airgun (thinking FX Impact or Wildcat) or a .22 (eternal 10/22 or CZ 455) to make dead quiet to murder crows with this winter.

I setting aside some money for a hunting trip too. Deer in Poland and gator in Florida are easiest to get, but fuck me if it wouldn't be neat to hunt ibex and Marco Polo sheep in Kazakhstan, moose in Kamchatka, or anything (everything) in Africa. It's still a bit out of my means, but I hope to get there one day.

They can, or they can taste like a tire fire. Depends on what they've been eating and where they live.

For example, I used to hunt them a lot around the Ft Bragg/Fayetteville area in NC. They ate a lot of peanuts and tobacco, so they tasted like you were chewing on waterlogged stale cigarettes. Then I moved to the Ft Hood area in Texas where they ate a lot of wheat and acorns and they tasted fine.

I have a question for hunters

Do most hunters wear some form of hearing protection when hunting, or do they leave their ears unprotected?
>>
>>34915863
I just use little earplugs. you are only likely to fire once or twice so earpro and other giant muffs are unnecessary.
>>
>>34915863
I hunt without. But I carry ear pro. If I think I can sneak it into my ears without alerting them, then I do. If not I take the shot.

However, I'm not a cherry. I already have tinnitus from Iraq. I actually hear very well. But I got EEEeeeeeeEEEEeeee

So what's 1 more shot when it's a 100+ lbs. Of meat in the freezer. Plus it tunes the wife out.
>>

No, instead I swipe my credit card at Cletus McBubba(((stein)))'s """hunting ranch""" because spending $900 for 4 or less hours of hunting """wild animals that totally weren't purchased and half domesticated for EZ killz :^)""" and then drinking domestic beer around a garbage can fire for a night with a bunch of fighting barn cats and opossums is definitely "THE REAL HUNTING EXPERIENCE (TM)(C)(R)".

Life in California is utter suffering. All the public lands have been overhunted to the point that it is next to impossible to find even fucking ground squirrels. The nearest BLM land to me, 2 hours away, looks like the waterless and featureless hills of the moon aside from the occasional knee high shrub and sparse patches of <2 inch tall grass.
>>
Is it legal to fuck a deer after you kill it if you also eat the part you fucked?
>>
>>34916283
Probably, animal cruelty laws don't apply to corpses and you're not selling the meat so health code violations aren't an issue. But really, anything is legal until you get caught so if you've got somewhere isolated to have your fun then have at it.
>>
>>34915527
That depends on where you are versus where he is.

Personally, I also live in Texas, but in McAllen. The coast is an hour away, but i only fish out there. Private land all over. It's a shitty position.
>>
>>34914195
You're probably better off confronting your mortality anyway, and the earlier the better.

You're right, we all will die. Some eill die violent deaths, most will not. Hunters all know how to quickly and cleanly kill the animal so that they don't suffer.

Also, if you think of most mammals having the same rough organ setup as humans (them being mammals and all), you can start learning comparisons to how strong/weak you are relative to whatever animal you're dressing.

Just remember that the kill isn't the end of it. That animal died, and you killed it. Show it the respect it deserves.

Eat your kill.

>>34915618
That sounds particularly interesting.

>>34915796
Your liver will taste like shit, but they won't get drunk from eating you. Not enough alcohol. But yes, the main diet of the animal will partially season the meat.

>>34915863
A friend of mine prefers electronic earpro for himself and his hunts. He says he can dial up the sensitivity so that he hears better than otherwise.

Don't hunt yet but that's only because my grandfather has taken steps to get back into shape and wants to take me on my first hunt. Plan on using a rifle he got specifically for me when we do hunt. Not the guy, but it's a matter of pest control; you gotta take action or bow down and become some animal's bitch.
Cats keep pissing on your porch because your faggot neighbor keeps feeding and enabling feral cats but refuses to take responsibility, you gotta pop them to keep them from doing it. Yes, the logical thing would be to pop your neighbor, but that's illegal even though creatures he cares for are violating the NAP.
>He could call animal services! Protective custody for the kawaii fuckin kittie katzen
You know what animal services do when they get off their asses to respond to calls about feral cats?
They take a room at a local hotel for a few days and set live cat traps out in problem areas.
The cats, caught in the live traps, get collected later that day, given a lethal injection, and chucked in a freezer they take with them to their incinerator to burn the carcasses.
The traps are then washed and disinfected, baited again, and set out anew.
The only cats that get taken into custody (read: put up for adoption) are tame ones you might find after the owner has died.
Now, if there's even a hint of suspicion of thought of a trace of nagging doubt about the cats posessing negative traits (inbreeeding, ate of their dead owner, shit outside their litter box), not neutered, or the cats aren't up to race standard (thus not worth much)? Needle>Freezer>Incinerator.

tl;dr feral cats are cunts but the people who feed and enable them are fuckin massive gaping homo cunts who do a lot more harm to the animals than >>34918343 does with his gun.

>muh barn cats

7.62x39mm is on par will 30-30, which is a respectable pig/deer cartridge. Just make sure your rifle is in good working order, sighted in, and use SP bullets of some kind. FMJ will have great penetration, but won't have a wide wound channel unless it fragments or yaws. You may be able to remove the jacket from the point of a FMJ to achieve an improvised SP using a dremel tool and a vise.

As long as you are sure you can get a good hit at the range you're shooting at, you're golden.
Well, provided you use modern ammunition. To some it might be obvious, but just to make it clear:
Surplus ammo will be FMJ and fuckin ancient. A modern bullet (soft point, homogenous, whatever that's not FMJ). I use Federal Trophy Bonded, Federal Trophy Copper, Federal Fusion, and only recently bought some Black Hills ammo with Barnes TSX bullets. If you can get either of those in 7.62x39, you'll find that you can hunt most everything. Calibre is for the most part greatly overrated as a determining factor in whether or not you can use a gun to take game. A good bullet, good shot placement, and knowing your and your gun's limitations (with particular attention to range).
>>
>>34914919

Actually what >>34918161 said could be true, but in that case, I was shooting brenneke, a type of shotgun slugs.

The leg shot was of no consequence, but the shoulder shot blew a bone and most of the meat, sending bone fragments in said shoulder muscles.

So I ruined one shoulder, one of the best parts of it.

Ideally, you want to shoot for the heart (impossible in my situation since the boar was facing me), or at least for the head ( but I couldn't aim for shit) even if it's much more messy.

Protip: Open your mouth when you shoot (even a little) in order to mitigate the shock from the soundwaves to your eardrums.

I personally don't wear ear protection when shooting. A good hunting day i'll shoot up to 10 rounds of light 12ga (birdshot) and never noticed any discomfort from it. If you do wear earplugs, i'm afraid it will impede on your ability to hear birds flapping, squeaking or any other subtle noise.

Sadly, no. The vast, vast majority of land where I live is private and I don't know any hunters that live in my state. That said, I do have a shotgun I intend to hunt ducks with (Benelli Supernova, 28") as well as a durr hunting rifle (Sako 85 Bavarian in .30-06) for when I do start hunting.

I find it hilarious that people talk about Texas as if it's some bastion of American freedom. Maybe it's because I'm stuck in this shithoke known as "Houston" but it doesn't feel very free. I'm hoping that changes now that I'm moving further west in a couple weeks.

>Is this shit really true?
yeah but things don't taste like what they've eaten, after all, the food does kinda get digested

but yes, it's why you shouldn't hunt in the city -- the meat is generally not very tasty, if not outright toxic and laden with heavy metals from the literal garbage they eat. even in the wild it depends, like anon's story with the hogs. I hear that deer in the Victoria BC are are fucking foul because they mostly subsist on flowers and literal garbage (like product wrappers and discarded paper and stripped tree bark and shit) but deer in the interior mostly eat grass and berries and taste a lot more like game should

There wasn't much of one, but what I recall was
>deer forelegs (2)
>dark beer (I used Odell porter, one bottle)
>roughly chopped onions (1 large one or 2 small ones)
>.5" chunks of potatoes (2 golden potatoes should do it, medium sized)
>.5" chunks of celery (2 stalks)
>sliced mushrooms (like half a package)
>salt and pepper to taste
>enough water to start the stewing process, depends on the size of your crock pot
Start that bitch on medium low, simmer for 3 hours before you taste. Double check that you have enough water (you SHOULD), double check the taste, and simmer another 3 hours.

Your vegetables should be tender and easily fall apart with minimal effort from a fork, the meat should fall apart with little effort. Take the meat out to rest, and you can THEN turn your broth into gravy if you know how. (I used corn starch, but some folks prefer flour, your call)

GO FORTH AND ENJOY

Nowadays:

>make my own paint
>use whatever military or hiking gear I have that fits the need
>do all of my hunting from the ground in natural blinds, portable doghouse blinds or just good-old-fashioned sitting or laying still, whether it's squirrels or bears

>make all shots either so close that it's a testament to my stealth and speed or so far that it's a testament to my marksmanship

Every sheriff in the state except for two of them (IIRC) told the government point-blank that they would refuse to enforce the magazine ban and since then it's been the LGS' discretion. Some obey and some don't.
