I've been thinking about getting a gun, either something modern (or replica) or something made in the 20s/30s chambered in one of the x-x type calibers.
I've narrowed down my preferred choice to either .32-20 or .38-40, and I can definitely get plenty of ammo and reloading stuff for them both, but I'm not sure which one I want.
On the one hand, .38-40 is pretty potent, especially with smokeless. But .32-20 is hard-hitting, too, and it has the added endorsement of Theodore Roosevelt, who, as Police Commissioner of New York City, had all officers equipped with it (IIRC). Plus, there's a song named after it.

OP here. Correction: Theodore had his police use .32 S&W Long.

I have reloading equipment for it that's original but I'm not old enough for a pistol and I'm not spending 3000 dollars for a rifle.

Which caliber?

32-20 I've held a few. If you have big hands the police positive is uncomfortable to hold. The military version is better.

Yeah, my hands are breddy big. I'll keep it in mind. I assume the recoil is pleasant.
As a side note, I'm surprised that more calibers and guns don't have songs dedicated to them.

Your 44-40, buddy it will do very well

I'm leaning a bit more towards .38-40 right now.
