What AR mags does /k/ recommend? What mags should one avoid?
>>
you should avoid AK mags mostly
>>
>>34906428
>What AR mags does /k/ recommend?
i use my old metal mags i stole from supply when i was in. the hk steel mags are the best to my knowledge; and opinion. most polymer mags are good if you're into them. i know most people are.
>What mags should one avoid?
they all work. out of the usgi mags, don't trust the ones with a black follower. if you can get those particularly cheap; the rare as fuck $3 finds; buy them and replace the spring and follower.
>>
>>34906428
I've heard mixed things about Hexmags, while PMags and Lancer 5s are good to go. USGIs are hit or miss, but the 5 I have have worked fine.
>>
I like my PMAGs the best and feel like they are made of a stronger polymer with more fiber reinforcement than competitors like Hexmag or lancer.

Aluminum mags are cool and light but they were designed to be disposable while something like a PMAG can literally be run over by a truck and be no worse for the wear.

how about a 1000 rounds of 55gr 5.56 and 10 pmags for $300?

http://palmettostatearmory.com/1000-rounds-independence-5-56-nato-55gr-fmj-ammo-ten-10-magpul-30rd-pmag-gen-m2-5-56-magazines.html

>inb4 psa steals your credit card info
never had that issue before and i buy ammo from them every other month.
>>
I like USGI mags, all of the ones I've used (black, green and orange) have all worked well but I'm not really abusing them at all.

Never had trouble with p mags and I've never used anything other than USGI or pmags
>>
>>34906428
I like Lancers, they look the best and are among the most reliable mags out there.
>>
Buy:
>PMAG MOE/PMAG M3
>Lancer L5 AWM (the AWM part is important, you probably won't see the older base model L5s but those had shitty followers)
>USGI aluminum with tan or Magpul followers (for new, look for Okay Industries/Surefeed/Brownells)

Avoid:
>Hexmags
>Tapco
>no-name/literally who polymer mags
>Promag
>Hera Arms

Novelty:
>Daniel Defense 32-round mags (probably fine but usually more expensive than the other options for the extra two rounds; why get these when you can buy PMAG 40 rounders instead?)
>E-Lander/HK steel mags
>HK polymer mags (same deal as the DDs, probably fine, but why would you buy them except for novelty?)

Basically, those first three are cheap and quality enough that you should make them the bulk of your magazines (10-20 is what you should be trying to get at minimum). Anything you buy beyond that is up to you, but ultimately Magpul, Lancer, and USGI mags are going to offer the best cost/performance ratio.

Also, if you buy used USGI mags with black or green followers, you can replace the follower with a Magpul one (they're sold in sets of 3) and it'll usually make 'em much better.
>>
I have a mix of pmags and USGI ones with green followers. They all work. I like the GI ones because they have the use and patina, one still has tape and 550 cord for a grip on the bottom.

>>34906650
>that tan flightsuit aesthetic
>>
>>34906428
I have used p-mags, lancers, and amend 2 without issue.
>>
USGI with tan followers
>>
>>34906603
Plastic feedlips tho, leave it loaded and it'll split like your ex girlfriends legs when you're not around. Usgi mags that are dented and stuck can be fixed/popped back with a fucking screwdriver.
>>
>>34908681

>Split feedlips
Welp, better tell my Gen 1 PMAGs from 08, that have been pretty much in constant use/left loaded since i bought them. They didn't get the memo.
>>
>>34906428
I use lancer because of the steel feed lips. However i think magpul has a stronger polymer than lancer. I recommend both

at being paper weights

I want to buy one for the novelty of having such a heavy mag
>>

Just put the lid on them, it depresses the follower and takes tension off the feed lips.

Chris coasty please. That shit doesn't fucking matter you're not fighting any wars, you're talking to the range.
>>
>>34909966

>Make your gun heavier and spend more money doing it for literally no reason

Again I like the novelty of it but for practical use I wouldn't call it the best.
>>
>>34909979
I mean if you dont want a completely reliable mag with a life time warranty don't buy it.

But don't meme about it like an asshat who has no idea what they're saying.

Anyone have a good source on the original Magpul 20 round mags? The new Gen 3s curve like they're just short 30 round mags. I like the aesthetics of the Straight 20 rounders.

Pic related.
>>
>>34907451

This is all the info you need right here. I prefer Lancers myself. (get the solid color mags and avoid the translucent ones as they are weaker)
>>
>>34910018

gun show or put up a WTB ad on a classified. You wont find them NIB unless you get lucky.

>not just getting a colt 20 rounder
>>
>>34907451
>avoid promags
I can second this x1000. Every single promag I buy only loads about 3-6 rounds before just fucking up. I even had one that could only load a single round.

Theyre trash.
>>
>>34909999

It's no more reliable than say a P-MAG, arguably less reliable given its spring life and the fact said spring can't be replaced (like the p-mag's can)

a NY state abortion.

Lancers and steel mags (ASC/CProducts) are everyone's go to.

PMAGs, Hex Mags, and ETS mags have never given me issue, but everyone bitches about the polymer feed lips bending if they're left loaded for 11 billion years. ETS isn't supposed to have this issue but they're new kids on the block.

People shit on Troy, Thermold, and Promag. Promag is pure shit. Other 2 I've never tried.
>>
I know I'm just repeating everyone else but
>magpul
>gi mag
>lancer

Personally I have 30rd lancers as my go to mags and in my "civil unrest" rifle. I also have some 40rnd magpul mags loaded because they're the only good 40s on the market to my knowledge.

ETS and Lancer mags are the most resistant to breaking and losing rounds when dropped, also the ETS are pure sex. GIs are p good too
>>
>>34907451
Agreed
>>
>>34910572
They get heavy as fuck when loaded full but they do work. Cheaper option is buying 40 rounders, and it helps the weight issue but maybe you don't care. If so, clip two 40s together and make an 80.

Has anyone ever used the beta c-mags? They're expensive as fuck so I wonder if they are just like all the other drums that jam or if they are reliable.
>>
>>34910806
i've used one a shit long time ago; like when i was a teenager long time ago. i got through like 50 rounds and thought that it was pretty excessive. i mean unless you're mag dumping or doing a support by fire, why do you need 100 rounds at the ready. i've seen the 150 round one at a gun show a while back. kinda churned my stomach for a bit. i've also used the smaller drums more recently though; x-products and magpul. both work really well, but again i really don't see the point.
>>
>>34910965
I just half ass want one for the gucci factor. I just don't want to drop $275 on a piece of shit.
I already have 6 30rd pmags, 3 20rd pmags, 6 lancer and 2 hk polymer mags along with a few various aluminum ones.
>>
does anyone one know of a 25 round mag? i kinda want something shorter than a 30 round, but more capacity than a 20. it'd be for a dmr or spr type setup. so i'd like to be able to get low, but 30 round mags tend to fuck that up. i'm half temped to get 20 round pmags and get a +5 extended baseplate for them.

Haven't seen MFT mentioned yet. They're pretty good as well and are typically cheaper than even Pmags. They're also designed to hold 1 extra round for closed-bolt reloads at intended capacity (e.g. a 30 rd mag can hold 31 but only if used for open-bolt reloads).
http://www.alloutdoor.com/2016/10/10/review-mft-mission-first-tactical-ar15-mags/
>>
>>34911466
I've accidentally loaded 31 into pmags before, they're pretty easy to insert on a full 30 with a closed bolt. Lancers are a bit of a bitch to load on a closed bolt with a full 30.
>>
>>34906723
P good deal, the mags alone could cost over $100 if bought individually.
>>
I have several pmags, and a bunch of c products steel and aluminum mags. out of the 30 or so mags I have the only one to ever have a issue is one of the pmags doesn't feed reliably.
>>
>>34911196
If you really want a drum just get a Magpul D60. It actually works, I have one.

That said I regret buying it since it would have been much cheaper to just tape two 30rd pmags together.
>>
>>34906428

anything made in Korea

>what works for me
Magpul works just fine. ASC as well. Have some USGI mags too that work just fine.
>>
>>34910806
The Betamags are fine, I've used them with positive results. The Korea copy, not so much. Friend had one of the Koreans ones and it would only feed 55 grain reliably. My SIG 556XI hated trying to do mag dumps with it. YMMV

No, you really should forget casket mags.

If you get one that feeds, rest assured it is on the very ragged fucking edge of functioning and it's going to HAPPILY take a shit and bind a follower if you so much as fart wrong in its presence.
