The F-5 was created because the Cold War necessitated the creation of a low cost fighter aircraft to supply to US allies to fight against those supplied by Moscow. The Cold War is over, now the requirement is for COIN against islamists who have no manned aircraft. The USA has supplied the A-29 to Afghanistan and soon Nigeria, while the AC-208 military Cessna has been supplied for low cost ISTAR and strike to Iraq. Both of those are excellent value.

You can get a fully restored 0 Hour'd F5 or T38 for like $900,000, and they are the cheapest supersonic fighter jet to keep in the air by a mile.

Sure you can get a Mig 21 for less up front, but 5 years and 2500 flight hours in, the F5 will have been the cheaper option.

Slavs got BTFO when they tested a captured F-5E against the MiG-21 and 23.

Biggest issue is that the EWAR suite doesn't have enough space or data pipe to be upgraded to anything approaching modern.

Sexy little dogfighter for its time, I really do wish that its successor the F-20 had gone into production.
